A crap above - Manhattan edition

This building is at 802 9th Ave in Manhattan. A picture speaks a thousand words, none of them positive. This is what's known as a vertical and horizontal enlargement. What architect comes up with these plans and thinks, "Damn, this is going to look fantastic!" Or is appearance no longer important? Anyway, I posted this one to show you folks that we are not alone - Manhattan is also full of crap - it's just different, special kind of crap.

As bad as it is, it's infinitely better than the garbage that gets erected in Queens.

At least it's not orange brick with rusted out balconies and Fedders covers.

In Queens they would have stuccoed over the historical building on the ground floor or covered it with faux marble and put fiberglass columns out front.

It's crap but a higher quality of crap as befits Manhattan.

What's the story with the cornices? The crapified part has a cornice. The one on the right has been stripped.

Check out the Halleran Agency (the esteemed Councilman's developer ancestor) behind the Taiwan Center just near Union & Linden.

What kind of crap is that?

I think the latter is correct-- it just doesn't matter anymore what anything looks like. And it never again will matter.

Also notice how the fire escape doesn't connect to the top floor.

I think it looks pretty good
