From the NY Post:City Council Speaker Christine Quinn gave it her best shot.
She was one of 15 legislators who learned firsthand yesterday what it's like to shoot a weapon and be a cop on the street -- after being invited by Police Commissioner Ray Kelly to the NYPD firing range in The Bronx.
Kelly and his officers schooled the council members on using guns in simulated crime situations designed to give the lawmakers a better understanding of what cops face. He had invited all 51 members shortly after The Post reported that a bill had been introduced in Albany requiring cops to shoot to wound, not kill.
The bill, drafted in the wake of Sean Bell's controversial police-shooting death, infuriated cops. It would force officers to use their weapons "with the intent to stop, rather than kill" a suspect. They would be mandated to "shoot a suspect in the arm or the leg."
Under present NYPD training, cops are taught to shoot at the center of their target and fire their weapon until the threat has been stopped.
Quinn (D-Manhattan) shot a Glock and a Smith & Wesson at a 10-yard range.
"On my first one, I got two in the shoulder and two center mass," Quinn bragged after obliterating her target.

Now, how many of the 15 have a pistol permit, or a badge? There is NO exemption under the law for them to handle a pistol, on the police range, and if they did so without a badge/permit, they are ALL guilty of possession of a firearm (NONE seem to meet any of the exemptions in article 265)

There are a few places that specialize in selling firearms to police, and the few places that DO sell firearms + rifles and shotguns (I'm drawing a distinction here for our ADA friend - Rifles & shotguns are not 'firearms' but rifles and shotguns - read PL400 and PL265) generally try to keep it fairly quiet, so I'm NOT going to mention them on the net right now, but they are indeed regular storefronts. It is POSSIBLE (but I don't know if they do) that Sports Authority sells.
MOST folks just travel to Nassau/Sufolk, and most firearms dealers don't want the extra hassle of dealing with the extra NYC rules and regs. That said, they will gladly fill out the NYC "green form" (PD 641-121) as well as the Federal Forms. Don't forget to bring your NYC Rifle and Shotgun permit - You apply (in Person) to the NYPD Rifle and Shotgun section at 120-55 Queeens Blvd. Bring your Money orders or credit card (THAT is new - used to be MO only) of $140 for the application + 94.25 Fingerprint fee. Be prepaired to wait a few months for the permit to be approved.

Yeah, if you only listen to conservative talk radio.
The SCOTUS decision left in place and re-affirmed that certain firearms restrictions mentioned in District of Columbia v. Heller, such as those "prohibit[ing]...the possession of firearms by felons or mentally ill," as well as "laws forbidding the carrying of firearms in sensitive places such as schools and government buildings, or laws imposing conditions and qualifications on the commercial sale of arms" are all permissible.
So don't get your hopes up Rambo.

It's a RIGHT, that is allowed to have restrictions (Hint, I've READ Heller cover to cover, have you?)
The main question in Heller is what level of scrutiny is allowed, which was NOT answered. It is obvious that the justices did not want "strict scrutiny", which WOULD have tossed just about every law out there. They have allowed "sensitive places" and "criminal restrictions" - now, between those levels, where is the line? THAT has not be answered
So, as I said, it's a RIGHT, that can be limited, just like you can't "yell fire in a crowded theatre" - aka the right is allowed to be restricted

ADAs are not peace officers, and are not entitled to carry guns. In fact, most DAs frown upon that practice. I was merely pointing out that ADAs go up to the Bronx and play cops and robbers in the "fun" house and then go on the range and shoot real guns, just for the experience, which is what Vallone did. Don't know why it was necessary for city council memebrs to do that, seems like a waste of time, but a photo op is an photo op, I guess. I guessing that if the police depatment invites you up there and stand over your shoulder why you do it, it's not illegal. I really don't know. But I know that anyone can go to a range, rent a pistol, shoot all you want and then go home, without any kind of license, even here in NYC.
