Illegal driveways continue to get built

From the NY Post:

Brazen Brooklyn residents are selfishly paving illegal driveways on their front lawns and creating unauthorized curb cuts — eliminating scarce parking spots.

“Most of them I’ve seen go from a lawn to a driveway overnight,” fumed Michael Buhse, 55, who lives on 79th Street between 19th and 20th avenues in Bensonhurst, where the problem is especially bad.

Buhse says he sometimes gets home from work at 1 a.m. and has to drive around for 30 minutes or more to find an open parking space.

Some homeowners cut the curb themselves, but most just drive over the short curbs onto freshly paved-over lawns — and then pitch a fit when anyone parks at the curb and blocks them in.

Worse still, the NYPD has no record of which driveways are legitimate.

So if a motorist parks at a curb and blocks an illegal driveway and the homeowner calls the cops, officers will ticket the car and force the driver to fight it in court, NYPD sources told The Post.

Why doesn't that dude take public transportation?

You are no exception brooklyn. Welcome to the asian invasion. Where they tear down nice gardens and homes and build huge ugly crap and park on sidewalks and get rid of any little green that was left. You are no exception to the crapification.

This has been going on in Howard Beach and Ozone Park for the past decade.

I will laugh when I see a bike rack installed in one of these hideous makeshift driveways.

It is common to rent these illegal parking spots for extra money.

I mean how many times have you seen this story, I mean for years, yet as usual NOT A DAMN thing is being done. FIRST, change the laws, that if this shit is done (which is illegal), the owner has 30 days to put it back to its original state, after a very hefty fine. BUT of course, enforcement is needed.

Instead of wasting money being dumped into the homeless hotels, train some of the homeless men and women and hire them at the DOB to do work. I don't understand why with this huge homeless population (caused by the archaic "right to shelter" law in NYC, take that money that is foolishly being wasted on these hotel shelters and provide a program like The Doe Fund and get these folks working and on a path to Independence.

Or will that interfere with your easy profit homeless business. AND of course the whole reducing the number of prisoners at Riker's is helping to fuel this homeless situation, by letting some folks at Rikers with a MTA card and a good-bye wave, without any kind of supportive processes.

Yeah, real liberal progressive policies. There is nothing liberal or progressive with this shit that NYC elected officials and this awful administration is doing.

Perhaps Queens Civic Congress should stop writing 2,000 word essays (always in fine print) on shopping bags and bioswales and discuss something of real importance like this.

Meetings that are dog and pony shows of agency staffers are often retreads of what we read in the weeklies. Asking them a question may make you feel good, but how do you know it ever gets followed up?

How about doing something with teeth for a change?

You own a home and pay property taxes. If you don't have a pull off some person will park their car in front of your home and you will never be able to park there yourself. Why not do this? Leave the searching for spots to the renters!

JQ, your comments and deft observations are spot on. Despite the social engineering that began with a kleptocratic, sociopath/psychotic monetary locust like Bloomberg (who murdered New York City, and who now lives in London!), and his DOT Commissioner, Eva Braun, I mean Jeanette Sadik-Khan, I have yet to see a single bike rack anywhere, as the destruction of Queens County lawns continue to ravage and tonsure what little green Earth is left!

Alas, Queens County was once known as the 'Borough of Cemeteries,' and now it can be so adopted once again (for entirely different reasons)!

This is mothing compared to the ongoing disaster on Flushing Avenue between 58th Drive and 59the Avenue in Maspeth. For YEARS the auto collision operation there has been parking unlicensed cars on the sidewalks and double parking them in the street. The 104th precinct is obviously blind to the situation or lining their pockets with green so as not to notice.
If you complain they tell you to get lost and do so in a frightening manner. If you tell them you are going to report them they laugh and tell you to go ahead. Local politicians do not seem to care.

Ditto on the Flushing Ave debacle. The problem with that is Maspeth itself. There are people there that like to defend that dopey auto body shop owner because the guy raises money for a cancer charity. So they think that gives him carte blanche to be a douchebag. The guy just elected there (Bob Holden) has been working on the junked car problem for a while and the state recently built a sitting area after state pols asked, so there's a little bit of hope.

Stupid Americans and racists always blame the hard working Asian man !
You need to build to the zoning, take in tenants (including extended family) because taxes are too high. Efficiency of small old American homes is too low to do this.
Forget cut grass, sweep tree on wasted space that can be making money, house children getting education, pay taxes and mortgage.
Move or get used to it because American children no want to work or study important things. Asian people value education, work as many hours it takes to educate our children.

Asian's will be all your landlords and doctors when you are old!!
This is the truth, you need to stop and think about it before talking your mouth.

Hey be careful what you wish for and leave them alone, no stinking change for the worse needed. --please !!! These guys are not the boy-scouts, they also have "private security" protecting the cars and area. Without them you would be overwhelmed with crime, vagrants and burglary. This because real scumbags, thieves and drug addicts are scared to death of them.

Remember you all know the 104 pct is nothing but a useless retirement home run via remote control under deBlasio. The 104 cant protect you, your property and cars included. Your lucky if they even show up within 4 hours when you need them for anything outside a murder or traffic fatality.

"Without them you would be overwhelmed with crime, vagrants and burglary." Maspeth is already overwhelmed with these things despite this. Plus an entitled douchebag body shop owner who thinks the sidewalks are his private parking lot.

"Maspeth is already overwhelmed with these things (crime) despite this"

No--Not the area around the body shop, tracks and tow trucks. It was once the worst, these people don't want clients cars, limos and expensive tow trucks with 2 way radio screwed with so its privately "protected" unlike that upcoming cesspool down by the hotels, step street, Crowley park area your referring to where you need an armed guard to take a summer walk at night.

If these people bitching stopped renting out top floors, basements or having a car for each kid living at home there would be plenty of parking.
That area was small one family beef & factory worker homes not designed to roof more then 5 or 6 people per house!! To add these people always shared with industrial and trucks on the sidewalks. Why after 60+ years (filthy soot belching coal & steam locomotives included) is a couple cars on a sidewalk 100s of feet from the closet residential home suddenly a problem now ?
Answer: These new transplants choose to buy, moved in, rent out to pay the off mortgage and now bitch "NO MORE SPACE" The problem can be seen by looking in the mirror. Not some tow truck or limo on a sidewalk 2-3 blocks away Plenty of fixes for this problem. --Cleanup you ally's, back yards garages areas of dog shit and park, sell that huge SUV and buys cars that fit down your driveways, Move back to where you came! Last, Eff off !!
Stop blaming other people for your own mistakes and misery !

This is hilarious. Transplants are bitching? No. It's the people living there for decades that are complaining. First, parking any vehicle on a sidewalk is illegal. The dude parks both his work vehicles and junked cars on the sidewalks. Next, parking junked cars all over the street is illegal. Third and most importantly, it makes the neighborhood look like a fucking ghetto.

Get a clue and learn proper grammar, troll. Actually, we all know who is posting here.

The police can certainly check records for legal curb cuts - however, this is more a DoB issue (and they are SO on top of things - not.) Curb cut info is generally available on the Certif of Occupancy. Will this be an issue the NYPD's new NCOs can address?

Under Giuliani we had Zero Tolerance. Now we have 100% tolerance. NYC is a shithole, get used to it.

An illegal curb cut complaint is the lowest priority for DOB complaints and will not be inspected for years. Good luck with that bensonhurst.
