Forest Hills streets become truck parking lots

From CBS 2:

Forest Hills, Queens residents say their streets have become an illegal rest stop.

As CBS2’s Lisa Rozner reported, the neighbors said tractor trainers form all over the country are parking and staying put for days, and they say no one is helping the problem.

Tractor trailers measuring 53 feet long stick out like a sore thumb on the Grand Central Parkway Service Road near 64th Road, filling up blocks. The city Department of Transportation said it is illegal for them to be there.

Residents said in the last year, the problem has gotten out of control.

“A parking lot — like a truck parking lot,” said Raj Patel of Forest Hills. “At night after 9 o’clock, it’s very hard parking. You can’t find the parking. You’ve got too many trucks here parking on the service road
“Because of this car, there’s lots of traffic over here, OK?” “They have to put sign, OK? ‘No parking,’” said Rafik Yusopov of Forest Hills.

“And they’re an eyesore,” said Laura Shepard.

The DOT said 53-foot trailers are only allowed on the nearby Van Wyck and Long Island expressways.

They should be in parking lots if they want to rest and get charged appropriately, because these things are like moving motel rooms.

I guess Forest Hills is becoming Jamaica now, where that issue is just par for the course in that ghetto ass community. ANOTHER quality of life issue where there is a lack of enforcement, because if there was vigilant enforcement, this would not be an issue, but when you do nothing or very little year after year, this is what happens. AND ticketing does nothing, as the A-hole council-member stated, "It is the cost of doing business." BUT what the fuck kind of answer is that for an elected official, that is pretty much a hands up in the air bullshit and "Nothing I can do". AND where is the major asshole, Melinda Katz on this, I mean this is her hood. Why is this asshole Katz always silent on EVERYTHING that is shitty. BUT hey, we speak 150 languages in the borough.

Seems to me, another pay-off to ignore or do very little.

Why does everything in this shitty city get reduced to LACK OF ENFORCEMENT. A major lawless city.

Total poor and CRAPPY Leadership in this city, not that it is an easy city to run, which is why, you should have the best of the best, not the worst of the worst.

This is nothing new in Forest Hills. It's been like this for YEARS. To the person who suggests that these trucks should be in parking lots, please tell me where the nearest truck stop is or where you propose to locate these parking lots.

Here's an idea-- TOW THEM. You tow the little guy with no issues and make him pay.
Isn't this a cash cow for the City? Why wouldn't you be TOWING these huge commercial vehicles and getting a big payback for them? It's money money money!

Allowed on the Van Wyck & LIE? The LIE is ok per NYS regs, but not the Van Wyck. And not on City streets w/o DoT permit - which the DoT hands out like candy. Fellow taxpayers, did you know, per a Federal study, that each one of the 53' trucks (empty) is the equivalent of 3,000 passenger vehicles in terms of impact on our roads?

DoT is in the midst of a major truck study - did outreach in all 5 boros. The point: how to handle Amazon & Whole foods-type box truck deliveries. Another case of the priveleged in Manhattan & the other "promised lands" getting attention while we get crap... wait: we get to go to meetings, so they can check out the "community outreach" box on their to-do list. Feh.

Maspeth has and continues to have this issue. We're getting a shiny new tow truck to deal with it...community awareness, agitation and engagement with local law enforcement remains the answer.

Kozlowitz is the eyesore. This lady does absolutely nothing for Forest Hills and this was supposedly an issue that was resolved 2 years ago. Shocking that there can't be a community

The truck drivers obviously saw Crappy's post about the new heavy-duty tow truck that Queens will be getting - but it won't be available until the end of August, so the drivers are taking advantage of six more months of free street parking for their trucks.

I am thinking of mall parking lots. Like Gateway the malls by Metropolitan Ave. Hell, there's plenty of space in Aqueduct. It's naive to suggest this, but it's better than parking on service roads where they obstruct traffic in residential areas or highway exits.

This is going to get worse if Amazon decides to open a warehouse here. Oh, my mistake, fulfillment centers.

And to Karen Kosowitz, if you are going to throw up your hands and find this acceptable, just fucking quit because you already did years ago.

Amazon can't open warehouses, because all the industrial space is being converted to hotels, due to the tax break advantage. So, when you don't have a convenient warehouse-- where do you store your goods-- in tractor trailers!

i THINK IT'S TIME FOR ANOTHER $1 MILLION DOLLAR TRUCK STUDY. LOL

I believe Ch 2 did their story based on the story in the Crap about the tow truck. I know they contacted me for some background for the story and referenced the comment I made on the tow truck post. So, even the news reads Queens Crap!

Let the air out of their tires. All of them.

The Grand Central is a Parkway. Not supposed to have vehicles over 5000lbs and no commercial vehicles.Large busses are classified as Commercial vehicles......no enforcement.

If people think these drivers are just pulling over to rest they are stupid morons, the owners of these trucks live in the area and are using the residential streets as there personal parking spots, this has been a daily nusense where I live in queens, people need to stop wasting time with worthless 311 and NYPD ans take matters into there own hands egg the windshields and the windows every single day until they move smash the windshield they won’t park there again trust me.. This was not a problem 20 years ago, now we live in 3rd world county and these people think they can do what they want, i bet the owners of these trucks are all West Indians and foreigners

Two months since this story and the news story and nothing has changed. I've seen 17 trucks parked there at one time. Zero response from the useless 112th.
