Woodhaven Blvd at a standstill due to new bus lane

From CBS:

A new bus lane on Woodhaven Boulevard is causing a traffic nightmare.

Drivers said their rush hour commutes have nearly doubled since the change.

Cars were backed up for miles on Woodhaven Boulevard on Tuesday night, and drivers say it’s being caused by the select new bus service.

One lane of traffic is now for buses only — no cars allowed.

Trottenberg said the DOT redesigned the pinch points and corridors in the hope of creating three lanes of traffic that move. The problem is in rush hour it doesn’t.

There are people who say it has added an hour to their commute.

Morons it has nothing to do with the bus lane. It has everything to do with cars turning left at no left turns. Additionally if you want to complain. Complain about the light sequence & the amount of cars on the road in the first place.

This is the *worst* redesign of any road in the city.

There is now bumper to bumper traffic on Woodhaven Boulevard from south of Jamaica Avenue to Metropolitan Avenue from 7 in the morning until 8pm, sometimes in both directions at once - and it's literally non-stop.

We watch it from the Forest Park Coops every day. It's a fucking nightmare to get anywhere.

To add insult to injury, most bus lanes are only enforced during rush hour. The new bus lanes seem to be enforced 24/7.

Councilmember-elect Robert Holden - please help us!

Are bicycles permitted in these bus lanes?

Only a week after winning re-election, Mayor Mandate policies are turning to shit.

This lane is not for safety at all, it's to generate ticket revenue. Polly is de Faustio's tool. When did she and her aides, which I assume amount to 20, do these studies.

What this is going to come down to his a vehicle protest. Meaning starting at gracie mansion to clog up de Faustio's motorcade to Brooklyn.

Don't be surprised if you see bike riders or douches on skateboards on this SBS lane.

SBS- stupid bull shit

First it was Queens Blvd being given over to the bicycles and now Woodhaven Blvd is given over to the bus lanes. Traveling in Queens is awful. Terrible how they ruined the city streets and now it causes more ties up and pollution from cars sitting idle on the roads. Oh and watch out every intersection has a camera so when you get stuck in it cha ching you get a 50 dollar ticket in the mail. All the local businesses are hurting because of these streets.
I just hope everyone who voted for Mayor Deblasio is now happy with their commutes and they shouldn't complain because they voted him for another term. I wish these people would open their eyes and see he really isn't into making our quality of life better.

The plan of the car haters is to slow automobile traffic to a halt, to make it unbearable and prohibitive to drive, and henceforth force commuters into public transport. They are clueless and indifferent to the car dependent reality of millions of families living in south and eastern Queens, south Brooklyn, Eastern Bronx and Staten Island. There's absolutely no plan to significantly improve car travel in the City. They see that as a NO-NO. The plan to lessen car traffic is to TAX car drivers.

"Are bicycles permitted in these bus lanes?"

I have rode on them when woodhaven blvd goes from 4 to 2 lane. I think you have to be nuts to ride in the middle lanes from Ozone to Rego Park anyway. For there is nowhere else to ride. In fact, that side of the road is the only place to ride there.

all working just as planned
ZERO MILES PER HOUR

all others need not apply

Wasn't everything fine the way it was everywhere before everybody decided to fuck it all up?

Oh don't worry about bikes - wait 6 months until they announce that they're going to take away yet another traffic lane and make that into a new protected bike lane.

The dope from park slope's war on driving is going to make the entire city into one huge traffic clogged, heavy smog cesspool.

Meanwhile, the Rockaway Beach LIRR tracks continue to sit abandoned, just a few blocks over from woodhaven. Train service direct to Manhattan is the only thing that will cut down on traffic, but our idiot electeds rather make it into a park for hipsters.

What a nightmare! This SBS has not only increased traffic on Woodhaven Blvd, any possible alternative route has become a bumper to bumper mess. In Middle Village and Glendale 80th St and 88th St simply does not move between 4pm to 8pm because drivers are looking to cut thru Forest Park with the hope of shaving a few minutes off their commute. For those of us in the nabe it has turned a 2 minute drive into a 1/2 hour ordeal. I also noticed the SBS Lane along St. John's Cemetery which was rush hour M-F only is now 24/7. The only possible reason for this debacle has to be to punish drivers for not taking the bus or riding a bike. I warned on this site years ago that the City wanted our cars and was called a crackpot. Not looking so crazy now. Not 1 politician has the balls to say NYC is full, that would mean turning away developers money.

This is the City's urban planning at its finest. How about these shitheads start to talk seriously about reactivating the old LIRR line (which runs parallel to Woodhaven Blvd) instead of trying to make it the next Highline.

Yes.

I think the landmark status given to that crusty factory building has made the Queensway pretty much settled by the establishment imbecile electeds.

What to make a tweak, dump "Polly want a Cracker", what a complete and total dipshit. But that pretty much sums up dumBlasio administration and NYC government.

Do any of these heads of NYC agency have a degree in COMMON SENSE. This again is NOT BRAIN SURGERY.

It really wasn't fine. Obviously this didn't fix the problem but this street was definitely not fine.

True !
This communists mayor is waging war on private car and homeowners and create a society to force everybody on to government systems and services --transportation included.
Let stupid voters pay the price and punishment.
The all day jam from south of Jamaica Avenue to Metropolitan Avenue ? Hmmm As in Woodhaven, Glendale Middle Village ? That would be about correct and by design to make conservative white neighborhoods the mayor doesn't like suffer. Make them suffer till they get on knees and surrender or sell homes and move.

the elected idiots don't or won't realize that the mass transit system is at capacity
most train lines are at max cars allowed per station/line
currently running at the minimum safe distance between trains
lets just add amazon prime into the mix
more delivery vehicles
add train capacity?
how long did the 2nd ave subway take?
and its still not done
we've been hijacked by Transportation Alternatives

Transportation Alternatives’ stated mission is to "reclaim New York City's streets from the automobile and to promote bicycling, walking, public transit."

THEY ARE AT WAR WITH YOU THE MOTORIST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Transportation Alternatives STATED GOAL IS TO ELIMINATE CARS!!!!!!

they are a commie environmental group masquerading as a public safety group

With 100,000 active supporters and a committee of activists working locally in every borough, T.A. fights for the installation of "infrastructure improvements" that reduce speeding and traffic crashes, save lives and improve everyday transportation for all New Yorkers.

can you say pedestrian plazas? that screw everything up!!!!!

this is a commie front group & lobby organization
their board has self proclaimed "best green ambassador by Treehugger.com" - Colin Beavan
The chair - Adam Mansky
is a social justice warrior wants to empty the jails among other things
he also owns Brooklyn Brewery
think about that next time you're stuck in traffic
this guy is effing up traffic to drive you to drink and profiting in the process

the lazy shits at the DOT just take whatever this group gives them and implements it

get out while you can!

Get out of your cars and take the bus.

What about the red bus-only lane on Main Street, in one of the most congested parts? There's no left turn lane in the part of Main Street right above the LIE, and with the idiotic red lane taking out one lane, there's only a SINGLE LANE for through traffic to take, resulting in massive congestion. Whoever thought up these red lanes is an ass.

If we want to get serious about our traffic problems we need a robert moses style highway project in this city. Our population has soared and no new highways have been built to keep up.

Woodhaven could be upgraded to an elevated 6 lane highway and we could cut down on congestion and travel times.

Anonymous said...

Forget about elevated highways... we need a big dig! Boston style.

Anonymous said...

All according to plan. The mayor wants to make driving impossible, and idiots reelected him anyway.

I'm a Middle Village resident that lives by Cooper Ave and 80th St that voted gor Mr Holden. For the last couple years you couldn't go anywhere by car between the times of 4-7pm..the traffic was just that bad. So you had to get your grocery shopping and doctor appointments done by then or you were stuck in travel hell. Now the times have gotten worse and it's between 3-8pm. Copper Ave/80st is a mess and people are actually driving down 1 way streets to beat the traffic.

The added bus lane on Woodhaven near the LIE was a middle finger to those people who elected Holden over Crowley. Why do we even bother anymore. https://www.facebook.com/groups/180274775838755/

Right from the horse's mouth - Transportation Alternatives' IRS filing:

"Transportation Alternatives' mission is to reclaim New York City's streets from the automobile, and to advocate for bicycling, walking and public transit as the best transportation alternative."

Everything you wanted to know such as officers and board members with salaries (and more!) from their 2012 IRS submitted forms found on their own web site [better screen shot the pages before they realize their stupidity in posting this info for all to see] found right HERE.

We don't need new highways, we need less people.

>Forget about elevated highways... we need a big dig! Boston style.

That would be lovely, but remember how much the Big Dig cost! If there was some way to make it affordable, we could get some actual underground highways to bypass city streets.

Last week we got the chance to maybe put a stop to this madness but most people seems to enjoy it so much that they decided to continue by re-electing the same people back to City Hall.

correction, only the idiots reelected him - 16% of them.

WITH FEW NORTH /SOUTH ROADS IN QUEENS- THE DOT can't figure out that a bus lane on Woodhaven Blvd will only make traffic congestion worse ? These idiots need to be fired and Trottenburg with them. This woman does not commute like us Queens people do. We need left turn lanes on all east west roadways - scrap the bike lanes- they strangle Queens. AND STRAGGLE De BLASIO !
