Overcrowded subways causing delays

From NY1:

If you thought that maybe this year, MTA trains were letting you down more than usual, well, you're not alone — even the MTA agrees that delays increased this year.

In April 2015, there were nearly 49,000 delays. In April of this year, they had slightly more than 50,000 delays.

The transit agency says overcrowding has gotten worse, accounting for 38% of delays in April.

People took nearly 1.8 billion rides on subways last year, setting a new record.

Wow, I wonder what's causing the overcrowding??

Thanks Amnesty City! What's the breakdown by borough? Taking the trains used to be so civilized (like flying!). NYC is filled with low-class, disgusting people! Don't believe me? Visit Westchester for a day.

I said it before and I'll say it again....if we deported like we should be, we wouldn't have so many delays on the subways.

I'd say that because the LIRR is sooooo expensive more people are riding the subways. Another reason could be the overpopulation of Flushing and the 7 train!!!

" Wow, I wonder what's causing the overcrowding??" Err, population increase(?) Commuters switching to mass transit(?)

Also having the distinction of being the worst fucking transit system in the universe.

The true population increase stems not only from these moneyed pioneers that have invaded and settled here, it's the goddamn tourists who seem to think only New York City, and Brooklyn Goddamn and the Worlds borough of Queens are the only places to go in America. The recent decision to curb Airbnb's illegal business of apartment lodging might slow it down slightly, but the damage is already done.

Way to fast track the tower pestilence too, Mayor's fun size and big slow.

The C, J, L, 4, and 6 lines. Wonder no more. That is where the bulk of the tower pestilence has spread.

They all pass by the trendier parts of the city, Bushwick, Williamsburgh, Greenpoint, Park Slope, Brooklyn Heights, Prospect Park, Crown Heights, Bed-stuy (still a town plagued with rampant indiscriminate crime). Even in the city in Gramercy and Union Square.

You should how roomy the trains get when they get off at these destinations. The available oxygen is enough to get you high

Overdevelopment - increase in infrastructure = overcrowding (and not just subways but schools and hospitals)

if we had students walk to school rather give them free subway rides, we may have more room.

I'm building more affordable housing than ever...not that there's anything wrong with that. What are repercussions?

Yeah..it took a lot of brain power for the MTA to come to that conclusion. No shit, Sherlock! Keep on overbuilding. Half of China crams into the #7 train at the Main Street terminus. What the hell, they do not give a crap. They are used to overcrowding and filthy conditions in their old country. As for the rest of us, it is UNCIVILIZED! But as long as the building boom continues , putting $$$$$$$$$$$ into our crooked pol's pockets, there will be NO RELIEF in sight! BTW...shady Paul Vallone is a real estate industry lobbyist. He is one of the guilty crooks rulining Queens! Hey, goombah, not enough money from your builder buddies? You gotta keep on approving more projects?
He belongs in jail with the other convicted politicians from the district! Settle for dumping the chitrool at the next election cycle.

Our politicians are so useless, they could never solve long term problems but only look how to get reelected. They should start investing in expanding our once world class subway. It shouldn't cost one billion dollars per mile to build a subway line. Stop spending money on welfare and start putting people to work on building a subway system.

Yuppies, tourists, immigrants... Gee, who else can we vent hatred toward? NYC has never been and will never be the bucolic, lily white, not too poor, but not too rich place where everything is Baby Bear perfect. After a 60 year lifetime in NYC, I have some advice - New York is not for wimps. Grow a pair, or get used to it, or work to make it better, (and venting your collective spleen online doesn't constitute work).

Now, anyone who can use the term 'World Class City' and 'New York City' in the same sentence, need look no further than what lies beneath it---a dangerously overcrowded, entrenched, congested, Third World cesspool of human overload---and, NOT ONE OF THEM IS A SUBWAY-RIDING POLITICIAN (apparently the very SCOURGES who created the disparity in the first place are exalted---outrageously, by all decisions that are self-prescribed (just like their salary bumps for whom everyone else continues to pay the price)!!

Abolish the ENTIRE city council, then, and their vile, vapid and vacuous, part-time jobs that serve ONLY THEMSELVES---and in one fell swoop, their 32% pay increases (and the public, cradle-to-grave parasites attached to them) instantly-and-automatically disappear---and the public rejoice!

Our politicians are so useless, they could never solve long term problems but only look how to get reelected.

SPY
THE ELECTORATE IS USELESS - THE KNOW THIS AND ALL THEY CAN DO LIKE CHILDREN IS WHINE AND FEEL SORRY FOR THEMSELVES.

THE KNOW THEY ARE GETTING SHAFTED, YET CAN DO NOTHING EXCEPT DEFEND THEIR LOCAL CLOWNS IN OFFICE. YOU ALL ACT LIKE AN INSULT TO THEM IS AN INSULT TO YOU - THE PEOPLE THAT WERE STUPID ENOUGH TO RE-ELECT THOSE THAT ARE ABUSING THEIR POWER AND RUBBING IN IN YOUR FACES OVER AND OVER.

Spy
They should start investing in expanding our once world class subway.

SPY
SURE, AND YOU SHOULD GET AFTER THEM TO DIVERT YOUR FARES AND YOUR TAXES TO HELP YOUR COMMUNITY - INSTEAD OF THE BULLSHIT THAT DEVELOPERS ARE PUTTING INTO PLACES THAT A FEW SHORT YEARS AGO DESERVED NO TRANSIT - AS THEY WERE NOT CONSIDERED FIT PLACES TO LIVE.

Spy
It shouldn't cost one billion dollars per mile to build a subway line.

SPY
NOR A MILLION FOR A DOG RUN BUT OUTSIDE OF GRUMBLING, WHO CARES HOW YOU FEEL IF YOUR TAXES ARE BEING USED TO BUY VOTES AND PAY OFF FAVORS AND YOU SAY NOTHING.

Spy
Stop spending money on welfare and start putting people to work on building a subway system.

SPY
TRUE, BUT YOU DO NOTHING TO STOP WELFARE FROM COMING HERE AND OFFER NO ALTERNATIVES TO GOVERNMENT - BUT TO LET IT BECOME ONE BIG PATRONAGE MACHINE.

PEOPLE, YOU DESERVE WHAT YOU GET AND DESERVE NO SYMPATHY FOR SITTING BACK AND WATCHING EVERYONE DO THE THINKING FOR YOU AND RUBBING YOUR CLUELESS FACES IN YOUR OWN BULLSHIT.

@Rl86

Sorry for getting our collective spleen all and venting hatred over the internets, but this mess was practically imposed on us. Departments like the NYCEDC and "NYC and Company" were given mass amounts of funding that germinated this warped concept that the city and even the outer boroughs of Queens and Brooklyn not only had to have luxury living but also become more reliant on tourism than anything else. In fact this is happening in every major city in the states and overseas. The frivolous spenders are taken precedence over the working people, as city services are made more convenient and specialized for them. It's also gruesomely evident in the cleansing of mom and pop and independent businesses through irrational jacking of their rents, to make it easier for artisan eateries and familiar chain stores to take over.

And they planned and did all this in a short amount of time with no improvements and advancement, financial, technological and material, to the city's infrastructure.

This isn't progress and frankly, no one should be told to suck it up, grow a pair and deal with it(those that include women who complain and grumble, wouldn't they have to strap a pair on?). No one should deal with anything that is irrational, stupid, and infuriating

And no one will, because there are going to be a shitload of stories related to commuter violence for the remainder of the year. Expect Subway Rage features with the accompanying smartphone videos in our abominable local network news hours.

MTA is run by a bunch of idiots. Maybe it is because they cut so many train and bus service. Here in North East Queens the express bus is no existent. Cut service and then raise the fare will bring overcrowding. Took me all but 2 minutes to figure that out.

The delusional, lunatic fringe is out in force today.
Re tourists: what the hell is the complaint? Millions of tourist visits mean millions in revenue from hotel industry growth and the jobs associated with it.
And this 'tower envy' bullshit: either you have a free, capitalist economic system that rewards builders and creators, or you have tyranny.
People can live where they wish, if they can afford to do so. If you can't, leave.
30 yrs ago vast sections of Brooklyn were crime-infested wastelands, now people live in sections that were formerly zoned only commercial/industrial.
What doesn't seem to be talked about by the Marxist DeBlasio?
There are ~ 750,000 'legal resident aliens' here for years, decades, who are not citizens, and have not taken steps to become citizens, because they don't give a damn to: it's too much of a bother.
Worse yet are the additional ~ 500 to 750K here without any legal status or documentation whatsoever. That's a total of ~ 1.5 million who are not US citizens that have come to the city in the last ~ decade.
They're the reason that the MTA now has to employ 'station agents' at now-mobbed platforms - such as Roosevelt Ave - to stop the door-blocking that prevents trains from moving on time.
These are the people that DeBlasio is squawking about providing 'affordable housing' for.
Expect tens of thousands more to come here to enjoy this gig.

Well is the "vision ZERO" program working exactly as planned?

ZERO MILES PER HOUR!

Make driving a vehicle so horrible that many are forced onto the already overburdened mass transit system.

Yes, all is working exactly as planned - PERFECT...

Wanna have some fun? Replace the word "subway" with "airspace". Then read it again.
Works well if you're trying to watch the NBA finals while also being ASSAULTED by LaGuardia's NextGen flight path.

JQ: it's actually the best transi system in the world. Name one that moves as many people as far every day. That said, of course it needs major work.

Irritator: abolish the city council? So we just have two of three branches of government? Why do you hate America? (Aside from your little problem with the mta).

Everyone: thanks for voting for democrats. They're the reason these problems exist. Fuck all liberals.

Yes, the system sucks, BUT it's the only system that runs 24/7. Every other city's transmit system shuts down about 1:00 a.m. - 6:00 a.m. for upkeep. Could that EveR happen in ny. AND has anyone noticed that these nice shiny cars, with the automated voices (specifically on the E/F line) hold LESS people than the older cars (the ones that run on th e"R" line). YeS, those cars hold 72 seats, these have 42 seats. AND no poles in the middle of the car for people to hold on to AND the poles over the seats bend in to the people sitting. So who ever designed these, was thinking who the hell know swhat
