All I gotta say is that I really can't stand the transplants using "like" for every other word in a conversation. Please go back home.

Lol that's how I feel. I'm one of the only white females left in nyc who has a hefty new York accent (with the exception of a few older white women who still live here). I am in my 30s and I don't hear anyone who's my age that has a heavy accent like me. My boyfriend is a Guido from south Brooklyn who is in his early 40s and he sounds beautiful to me because he has the whole deep Brooklyn accent. I have a heavy accent because my mom was born in Brooklyn in '47 and my father was born in the Bronx in '41. My grandparents even had accents because they were born in nyc too. So yes you disgusting liberals and illegals, please go home back to your state or country!!
I had this one Chinese lady on the bus who tried to yell at me for cursing. I had to tell that bitch off real quick. How you move to my city and try to tell me how to talk?
I gotta admit, over the years my brooklyn accent iain't as thick as it once was. I notice when i leave the area, especially if i go south,i tend to lay it on a little more.i'm proud of it!
I can't remember the last time I heard a Greenpernt accent like earl, berl ,curl (oil, boil, coil). That accent disappeared with Ed Norton 40 years ago. Same goes for the thoidey thoid and thoid (33rd + 3rd) accent of my youth. I can live without that but I draw a line in the sand with calling soda, pop. BTW real New Yorkers don't start every sentence with SOO.
I've heard plenty of native New Yorkers using "like" every other word. Were talking multi generational natives, from queens and Staten island and Brooklyn..
I just hope our Mexicans don't adapt the slower, lazy southwestern accent that the second and third generation Mexicans in California, Arizona etc use, where they sound like they just woke up and call everyone, "dawg". Talk about an annoying accent!

Being a native New Yorker doesn't give you a free pass to be low class. Sounds like she was giving you a lesson your mama shoulda' taught you, kapish?

I'm sure after the chinese lady 'gave him a lesson' in class, she spit on the floor, elbowed someone in the ribs to get a seat, and started cutting her fingernails.
What exactly is a New York accent? The Dutch had an accent Then the English had their own accent Then the Irish and Germans had an accent The Italians and Eastern Europeans had an accent The Blacks and Puerto Ricans had an accent The Asians and Latinos have an accent Whats is a NY accent?
watch the whole movie,it's been out for a few years.I think channel 13 showed it last spring.
And yes,Just sit on the A train and marvel at the tones and dialects of generation gentrification. It's like a lethargic feeble version of the valley girl accent that was popularized in a frank zappa song. And yes the guys talk that way too, which may be why when they attempt to grow facial hair it seems to be splotchy.
I don't know if they are wearing their granny glasses too tight or refuse to give up the clothes they wore when they were 9,but these affected tones that come out of their mouths also contains an abrasive vibrato and then devolves into a gurgling drone, like an elongated fart.
Anon asks what is a ny accent and proceeded to list all the races and nationalities that populate this once fine distinctive city, which kind of answered his or her own question.Even other races or creeds of these transient twerps adopt the self absorbed hipster accent.
Judging by the survival rate and the contributing factor in the exodus of long time residents,or talking knishes,it is time to mimic these terrible sounds. It might be the only way you can get an affordable place to live,in addition to start making crappy art or creating shoddy merchandise and labeling it brooklyn made.
The disappearing New York accent became apparent to me a few years ago when one of these transplants who was auditioning for a play asked me to read his part aloud so he could tape my accent . The part was for a guy from the Bronx and I come from eastern Queens but that was close enough for him. I wonder if he got the part?
My wife and I live in Queens now, but both of us are from Suffolk County. The NY accent is alive and well there, and we both have it. In fact, when we traveled down South we've been stopped 2 or 3 times by, "Y'all from New York?"..lol
The people who always interject "like" are essentially stupid, low attention span folk. They use "like" to give them pause to figure out what they will continue to say. Since these youngsters cannot blame their lapses on experiencing a "senior moment" they use the "like" strategy. It beats using, "um" or "uh"!
I love your site, but I don't like the rhetoric of 'natives' and 'transplants', the latter of whom should 'go home'. I wasn't born here, but I pay property taxes, I work here, I spend my money here, I'll probably die here. There's no reason to adopt the language of xenophobes in order to make a point.

Why your neighborhood is full of Queens Crap
"The difference between dishonest and honest graft: for dishonest graft one worked solely for one's own interests, while for honest graft one pursued the interests of one's party, one's state, and one's personal interests all together." - George Washington Plunkitt

The owner of Sambucci Auto Parts in College Point (used to be at Willets Point) has a true old Italian New Yorker accent. Thoity- thoid and thoid!
Louie ck nailed this a few years ago...

Whoa...nice cleavage. Is that a fan of hers hanging on the wall?

Someone's a bit defensive. The comment was directed at the transplants that use like 20 times in a conversation, not all transplants.
