Stores still closing at Atlas Park

From the Daily News:

More than a year after mall giant Macerich bought the Shops at Atlas Park, business owners there say the struggling mall has yet to turn a corner.

But they are are holding onto hope the high-profile firm can turn it into bustling center, even after the announcement of the most recent closure, women’s clothing store Coldwater Creek. A spokeswoman confirmed that store will leave the Glendale shopping center on March 15.

A few storefronts have opened in the past year, but none have filled the hole left by anchor store Borders, tenants said.

Boris Sorin, an attorney who has represented store owners throughout previous rent negotiations, said landlord-tenant relations are much better under Macerich.

Besides the theater, nothing there to draw attention.
I bet Macerich is waiting for green light for WalMart.

It's unfortunate that the retail world is going away, and it's never coming back to the same extent. Recommend entertainment and sports-- they are on an upswing. Bowling alley, anyone? Indoor sports are way to go.

It has gotten so bad there they stopped taking credit/debit cards at the parking garages. That small slice they had to give to the card companies was hurting them i guess.

What a joke.

GAP, Victorias Secret, H&M, Zara, Sketchers, etc are the types of tennants that they should be looking for.

Please no walmart, dollar stores, or any of that crap that will draw in the human garbage from ridgewood/bushwick/jamacia/woodhaven etc

Every Large Corporation Needs a Loss that they can write off their taxes. Atlas is Exactly that For Macerich. They're Not going to DO anything with Atlas. The Community will hear grandiose plans for awhile about how they're courting different chains to come to the mall, but all the plans will fall through. We're stuck with a giant white elephant in the middle of Glendale, Thanks Damon

I never understood how that location made sense, I am sure some computer model says it does but it always seemed like an odd place to put down a mall.

Macerich is probably waiting for an okay from Walmart, so they can proceed and turn the mall around. If this plan doesn't come to fruition, I think a sports and entertainment venue would be a great idea. Where is the nearest bowling alley? Billiards hall? Swimming pool? Fitness Center? Ice Skating Rink? Roller Skating Rink? Install them with restaurants and move theaters and it will be a success.

The Queens Center Mall is only 10 minutes away by car from Atlas. Go back to an industrial park and provide jobs.

Kramer: It's a write-off for them.
Jerry: How is it a write-off?
Kramer: They just write it off.
Jerry: Write it off what?
Kramer: Jerry all these big companies they write off everything.
Jerry: You don't even know what a write-off is.
Kramer: Do you?
Jerry: No, I don't.
Kramer: But they do - and they are the ones writing it off.

Walmart isn't interested in Atlas it doesn't fit their business plan. They need HUGE stores. Think one store as big as BJ's at Rentar Plaza. Oh and free parking.

Walmart is currently planning to open smaller 10,000 sq ft stores in NYC. Atlas may just fit the bill.

Yeah....ummmm......I think I heard on the news a while back that the economy wasn't doing so good. Or something like that....

There is nothing wrong with Atlas that can't be fixed. It can accommodate a supermarket, a bank, a post office, a hardware store, a plant nursery, a pre-school, a cafe along with the assorted little stores just like a main street would have. Chili, the movie house and gym is thriving - the make up of the other stores were weird or too hidden inside the mall to succeed. If Walmart were to open(where?) that would be great for the community at large.

Would be great if they put a Walmart at Atlas

Walmart really would turn Atlas Park into a ghetto in no time.

Free parking like most other malls have would help a lot.

@Anonymous, thank you for that Seinfeld quote about the write offs, I seriously laughed out loud when I read it. So applicable to the situation at hand!

Anyone who thinks Walmart is a great thing needs to have their head examined. When you get a job at Walmart they give you a training class on how to apply for Welfare, food stamps etc to supplement their small income. They promise to make you full time and never do. Most of my family lives in area with Walmart and they have seen how it has killed the towns. Its a vicious cycle that I don't want to see happen in my back yard. Here is a link to a pdf that uses actual data from cities like Illinois of the economy before and after Walmart. Its not the crap your hear in the news, its actual facts. You may think you want to buy a t-shirt for $1 but that will be your downfall. http://advocate.nyc.gov/files/Walmart.pdf

Maybe Damon could come back and hand out money to the little people from his "savings" again.
What an ass.
