More $ for MetroCard?

From Fox 5:

The cash-strapped Metropolitan Transportation Authority, with its $800 million budget shortfall, is reportedly looking to charge straphangers for buying a new MetroCard.

The NY Post reports the mass transit agency wants to raise money by imposing a $1 surcharge on new MetroCards.

The cards used by millions to travel the city's subways and buses are re-fillable at vending machines. The fee would be for a new card. Used and usually empty cards are often seen on the floor at subway stations.

In a statement issued Friday, the MTA said that it is sticking to an agreement with the state legislature that called for a 7.5% increase in revenues from MTA fares and tolls in January 2011.

The bullshit will never end. The MTA will keep raising fares and prices for metro cards and still cry poverty.

Fares go up all the time and the MTA is still broke? Something is not right.

Because the MTA fucked up big time. Instead of jsut worrying about running their damn system, they decided they would try to play the real estate game.

When the bubble burst and they were no longer making truckloads of rent money, they got screwed. meaning, we now get screwed.

And yet again they screw their customers. I only have busses near me, and always rely on the packaged cards at the deli. I'll have to take a special trip the the subway to re-fill my card, costing me money I didn't need to spend.
Plus the cards expire, so no matter what you'll be forced to pay this additional fee weather you want to or not!

Keep in mind that the 30 day card are not refillable

What did you think would happen when they decided that metrocard would be better for the rider? Every time I stand behind someone swiping over and over at a turnstile, I wish for the return of the old token. Of course we know that will never happen.
EZ pass is no better, now they charge you $1 a month maintenance fee for the privilege of having one. $1 is just the start, it only goes up from there. And we just sit idly by and take it.

You could have voted for the other guy.

They need to get rid of the "swipe" cards and go to a contactless card like 99% of the rest of the world has moved to.

Has anyone renewed their car registration lately? or gotten their new license? The ridiculous hike in fees for those-which are imposed over the entire state-all that extra money goes to the NYC MTA. So people in The farthest reaches of NY State, people who practically live in Canada, are also supporting the MTA.

As far as I am concerned, the MTA is a type of Mafia, and the government should regulate it better.
