From tweeder to TLC commish?

From the Village Voice:

Mayor Bloomberg announced today that Taxi and Limousine Commissioner Matthew Daus is stepping down from his job. Guess who's being considered for the job? David Yassky, the former city councilmember who lost last year's primary for the Democratic nomination for comptroller (which was won by John Liu, who presently holds the gig).

Bloomberg favored Yassky over John Liu in that race, during which Liu made much of the fact that Yassky flip-flopped and finally came down in favor of Bloomberg's term limits extension in 2008. (Liu was opposed.) Since taking office -- indeed, since before taking it -- Liu's been a pain in Bloomberg's ass.

The TLC commissioner's job is something of a patronage plum -- Rudolph Giuliani gave it to Diane McGrath-McKechnie, a former sacrificial-lamb Republican candidate for Mayor versus Ed Koch -- though some commissioners have served with distinction. Liz Benjamin says Yassky has been "mentioned for a number of posts in the Bloomberg administration since losing the election."

Looks like screwing his constituents will pay off for the wimp in the end!

Maybe instead of community boards and borough presidents, the charter commission should dump 6-figure salaried commissioners as qualifications obviously are not required.

Yassky should be required to drive a cab/limo six months to qualify for the job. and pay for his traffic summonses . and repairs to the city vehicle as well.

Seriously, Yassky never drove a cab in his life. I don't care about his Ivy League degree. For this position he is unqualified.

Why do they always recyle our loser politicians into other city government jobs? We need to flush the toilet on all of them and start fresh. This idiot probably has a chaueffeur and forgot how to drive. Yeah, he's qualified for this new job. Dump him!

Actually, there are many. There's Geoff Canada and Malcolm Smith, for example, who seem to getting 72 million to build charter schools, if today's Daily News is any indication. This is while Queens is short 33,000 seats in high schools alone.

Of course Canada ran the mayor's propaganda campaign about keeping his fictional education achievements going, along with a bunch of nonsense about how the new schools were better. Funny how you build a new school, fill it with new kids, none of whom have the special needs that dragged down the old one, and it looks better.

Of course, you need to send all those kids to another school, then close that one too, otherwise no one will appreciate your improvements.

I'm glad to see Bloomberg's riled the anti-Semites, but the fact is religion plays no part in his anti-education agenda.

I have grudgingly grown to accept that appointed/patronage positions in our fair city are where failed (and I will add, REVILED) politicians go out to pasture.

Speaking as someone who lives with the legacy of David Yassky the City Councilman on a daily basis I would humbly like to recommend Mr. Yassky be put on the public payroll and given an office with a desk--- just a desk. All David has to do is sit at this desk Monday - Friday during business hours. He can take a nap, doodle on a note pad, read Plato's Republic. Whatever he wants.

This will (hopefully) preclude him from screwing the citizenry of this city any further.

Matt Daus did a pretty good job and was failry pro-active. Did Bloomberg push him out?

It was probably one of those deals where Bloomie required all of his commishes to submit letters of resignation at the end of 2009. Then it was up to him to say "yea" or "nay" to each one. Presumably he said "yea" (or even "yay!") to that of Daus, Daus' competence notwithstanding, just so he could plop Yassky into his spot.
