Queens kitties need homes

Queens Shelter Set to Close Its Doors; Cats Need Homes

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- The Animal Haven shelter in Queens is getting ready to shut its doors next month, and roughly 75 cats will need good homes.

The Flushing shelter's operations will now be run out of its SoHo facility and its mobile adoption van will operate in all five boroughs. However, the building's lease only allows for 10 dogs and 25 cats in the shelter at one time.

The shelter is working on moving the remaining cats to local rescue groups, but most are already filled to capacity. Animal Haven is hoping the public will come out to adopt them.

The decision to close the shelter, which opened in 1967, was based on financial constraints and low adoption rates. The outdated facility took in more animals than it could manage, leaving many cats and dogs to linger for years.

Closing the Flushing shelter will also leave Queens without a full-service animal shelter.

The shelter, which once took in animals that were elderly, sick, or had behavioral problems, has also changed its mission statement. It will now only take in animals by appointment and what it has appropriate space and resources to care for.

For those interested in adopting from Animal Haven, visit the Flushing shelter at 35-22 Prince St., or the Web site at www.animalhavenshelter.org.

Could be true. Some of the shelters are notorious for being over protective about letting animals go to homes.

I know a few chinese food delivery business owners that can provide a beautiful home for these cats.

During these tough times we need to pinch every penny we get!

That is not funny at all (chinese food asshole comment) - don't you find it horrifying how many cats are roaming around Queens? What is wrong with this city and borough that it can't support good no-kill shelters? It really pisses me off that every single time I leave the house for an extended walk, I see at least 2 cats outside. It just goes to show that Queens is filled with morons and fools.

The sad fact is that they reproduce faster than they can be cared for.
