Eric Adams got a pile of cash to save his non-profit org's concert promotion from his lawyer and chosen chief of staff

NY Daily News

A Brooklyn power broker in the running for a job in Eric Adams’ new administration had his law firm make a $50,000 no-interest loan to save a summer concert series closely tied to the mayor-elect, emails obtained by the Daily News reveal.

Frank Carone, a lawyer for the Brooklyn Democratic Party and partner at the politically connected Abrams Fensterman law firm, has served as both Adams’ lawyer and fund-raiser. Emails obtained by The News through a Freedom of Information request shed new light on Carone’s close ties to the Brooklyn borough president and future mayor.

In the summer of 2019, Carone and his law firm came to the rescue of the Wingate Concert Series, which serves as an Adams showcase, after it ran into financial trouble. Adams regularly appeared onstage at the popular annual shows, which have featured the likes of Slick Rick and R&B star Monica. Promotional flyers prominently credited Adams for organizing the free event.

Adams sponsored the series through the borough president’s office and his nonprofit, One Brooklyn. In 2017, he tapped the nonprofit Make Music New York to run the concerts.

Over the next three years, Make Music’s budget ballooned from less than $200,000 to nearly $1 million, and Borough Hall’s annual contribution doubled — from $100,000 to $200,000 — making Adams’ office the group’s top government benefactor, records show.

But in 2019, Make Music’s expenses shot up by $300,000, according to public records.

For the show to go on, the nonprofit needed money fast.

Enter Carone and his politically plugged-in law partner Howard Fensterman. Adams’ deputy, Ingrid Lewis-Martin, introduced them to the head of Make Music New York, James Burke.

“They understand the urgency,” Lewis-Martin wrote to the three men in an introductory email on June 20, 2019. “When others fail, Howard and Frank deliver.”

Impunity City

Current mayor of New York City Bill de Blasio might be suffering under a massive hangover after the abrupt ending of the final and biggest concert of his NYC Homecoming Week, which he and the New York City Economic Development Corporation planned nearly 3 months in advance, as remnants of Hurricane Henri hovered over Central Park and delivered some lightning bolts to force the concert promoters to kill the show after only 2 hours and in the middle of sappy songwriter Barry Manilow’s set.

Nothing couldn’t have been more apt of The Blaz’s incompetence and megalomania than when he went onstage and tried to salvage the festival by yelling at the crowd not to depart and promised the show would resume while shielded by a saran wrap slicker, only to have it kiboshed 8 minutes later. But it’s not like this wasn’t just spur of the moment desperation from the Mayor, because this idiot actually had held a press briefing with the NYC Emergency Mgmt. Commissioner to warn about Hurricane Henri’s arrival. At the exact time when the concert began at 5 P.M.

So The Blaz and the Emergency Dept. Commissioner John Scriviani knew the severity of the tropical storm, warned citizens to take precautions and to avoid any plans that would jeopardize their safety and they still allowed the show to go on. These two boobs knew the storm would be unpredictable and both acted like that Henri was just going to remain in Long Island until the next day. Ludicrously unscientific claims the Blaz made earlier in tweets 4 hours before he declared a state of emergency right when the We Love NYC concert first act was performing on stage (and about 6 hours after the current governor Andrew Cuomo declared a state of emergency!).

Blaz Aid

NY Post

This bridge over troubled waters ends — with a concert in Central Park.

City Hall is teaming up with legendary producer Clive Davis to put on a massive music festival on Central Park’s Great Lawn to celebrate the Big Apple’s summertime revival following the devastation of the coronavirus pandemic.

“We decided to do something classic, iconic, a massive concert in Central Park” said Mayor Bill de Blasio during his Monday morning press briefing. “It will celebrate the summer of New York City, the comeback, and it will emphatically make the point there is no stopping New York.”

The festival could be as much as a week long and is set for sometime in August, although there are no set dates or acts yet — though Hizzoner promised a line-up full of big-name New York talent recruited by the Brooklyn-born Davis.

“I turned to Clive, I said, I need the biggest, most extraordinary all-star lineup you can put together, heavy on New York artists. He said, I’m on it,” de Blasio added. “Get ready for an unforgettable week, a once in a lifetime concert and a moment that really says New York City’s back.”

The Blaz announced this after spending 40 minutes saying nothing about how to stop the daily gun violence. I bet more people would rather be able to go outside without the fear of a stray bullet hitting them than to see a lame ass concert festival featuring a record executive's artist portfolio.

Chronicling the US Open invasion

"Hi Crappie, I was in Flushing Meadow Park and took these photos of all the parking lots that are marked for the US Open.Of the 6 parking areas all are on grass except 4a and 4b which have paved over many years ago for parking.

The electronic sign is directing cars to Citi Field for parking. The two adjacent parking lots by the Queens Museum are used for all the emergency vehicles and there are more police vehicles all throughout the park as every car the enters the park must be inspected at various check points.
Remember the lie put forth by the Wilpon's and Related developers that Citi Field parking lot is not needed? This week on top of hosting the US Open there was two days of concerts by Lady Ga Ga.There was a traffic nightmare and I saw cars going all through the park on the various roads not just the outer roadways and none are well marked and are dangerous to cars, bikes and pedestrians alike.
Yes there are plenty of parking areas in the park and surrounding areas but Citi Field lot is well used too and needed.Add a mall with stores, restaurants, movie theaters on top of the Met's, US Open and large events and concerts is a recipe for disaster and not what a park should be.

The Mayor and our city council wanted a mall so I guess their plan is to use our park as a parking lot for all the stadiums they want to build.
I sure hope the city is making lots of money from the US Open because one can only imagine what it is costing us with all the police, firefighters and other assorted first responders involved each day.I know one thing the money isn't going back into the maintaining the park.I bike from the Promenade along Flushing Bay to around the lake all the time and I see roads not marked and in bad shape, I see homeless camped out on the rocks of the bay, I see lots of garbage washed up on the shore.Yes for the Open they plant lots of flowers and it looks pretty for the people going in but with all the millions of dollars from baseball, tennis and concerts you would think we would have a world class park up there with Central and Prospect Park.
I've been trying for 12 years just to get the city to put in a crosswalk for pedestrians walking and biking to the Marina and they have done nothing. They spend millions on building a promenade not realizing the people are going to want to get to it and this is a very busy road with trailer trucks whizzing by. For years I wrote the Park's Dept. and they said there was no funds available and there is a Master Plan and these things take time. This year I contacted Councilwoman Ferraras's office and they contacted DOT to do a traffic study.
The city is so concerned about putting bike lanes everywhere how about in Flushing Meadow after all it is a park and there is even a bike rental concession .Biking around the park there are no bike lanes or signs informing drivers to share the road and many of these roads drivers treat as extensions of the highway's that surround the park.
The future of the park looks grim, when you think that the Mayor ,the City Council and the Boro President all were in favor of the shopping mall and it was only a small group that opposed the plan that got it stopped for now.Remember the Formula 1 race track that was to race around the lake or the many stadiums that have been proposed? It will only be a matter of time when a plan will come along that can't be refused and the people will be too complacent to care." - Richard

Music festivals not coming to FMCP next year

From the Times Ledger:

The city Parks Department Monday denied applications from three entertainment giants hoping to use Flushing Meadows Corona Park for music festivals this summer after opposition from Borough President Melinda Katz. Madison Square Garden, AEG Live and Founders Entertainment were seeking to close off large portions of the park in order to stage for-profit, multi-day events, but were denied permits for the second year in a row.

“Without a fair policy in place, I remain opposed to any applications from for-profit organizations to run paid-admission events in Flushing Meadows Corona Park,” Katz said last week. “The absence of a revised policy, including a set selection criteria and process approved by the community, renders the process arbitrary and unfair. Cutting off public access to our treasured parks flies in the face of the very principle behind our parks, which is space designated for public access and equity.”

Parks had no further comment and AEG Live could not be reached, but Tom Russell, co-founder and partner of Founders Entertainment, understood Katz’s opposition.

Festivals still may come to Flushing Meadows

From the Times Ledger:

Borough President Melinda Katz has launched a pre-emptive strike against the city Parks Department and three entertainment giants that are seeking to use Flushing Meadows Corona Park for paid-admission music festivals this summer. Madison Square Garden, AEG Live and Founders Entertainment have all filed applications with the city to close off large portions of the park in order to stage events.

“Without a fair policy in place, I remain opposed to any applications from for-profit organizations to run paid-admission events in Flushing Meadows Corona Park,” Katz said. “The absence of a revised policy, including a set selection criteria and process approved by the community, renders the process arbitrary and unfair. Cutting off public access to our treasured parks flies in the face of the very principle behind our parks, which is space designated for public access and equity.”

The same three companies attempted to stage music festivals in Flushing Meadows Corona Park last summer, but their applications were denied after fierce opposition from Katz and numerous civic associations. Parks Commissioner Mitchell J. Silver said he would explore new rule-making to create an appropriate framework for approving large-scale multi-day events in the park, including limits on the potential number, scale and nature of any such events so as not to have an unreasonable impact on the park and its users.

These new rules have not been established as the Parks Department reviews the applications. The city has until Dec. 19 to approve permits for the entertainment giants.

Too much activity in the park?

From the Daily News:

One Queens lawmaker said Wednesday the promoters of the recently announced Kanye West headlining concert at Citi Field need to examine the traffic, safety and economic impact of the show if they want support from the surrounding community.

Founders Entertainment, the organizers of the Governor's Ball, on Tuesday said the first-ever Meadows Music and Arts Festival will take place in the Citi Field parking lot on Oct. 1 and 2.

City Councilwoman Julissa Ferreras, whose district includes Flushing Meadows Corona Park, said Wednesday she is worried about conflicts with the busy Makers Faire taking place the same weekend at the New York Hall of Science across the park.

But Ferreras stopped short of calling for Meadows to be canceled or rescheduled.

“I believe in bringing cultural events that can spur economic growth to benefit our community,” said Ferreras, the chair of the Council’s Finance Committee. “There are serious concerns about the impact of a music festival on our community, including how this would impact Makers Faire, an existing and popular event in the same park on the same day.”

Founders officials, who have met with Ferreras, said they are not making any parking available to attendees of the Meadows in order to accommodate other events.

FMCP the victim of piss poor event planning

From the Daily News:

Organizers of the Governors Ball are planning a two-day concert outside Citi Field in October, the Daily News has learned.

But the inaugural Meadows Music Festival could cause major headaches in Flushing Meadows Corona Park with the popular World Maker Faire taking place nearby at the New York Hall of Science at the same time.

Both events are scheduled for the weekend of Oct. 1-2. The festival, which would feature an eclectic mix of music and food, would take place in the parking lot of Citi Field.

The annual Maker Faire, which drew more than 85,000 people two years ago, takes place in the Hall of Science parking lot. But drivers are usually shuttled over from the Citi Field lot.

No music festivals at FMCP

From the Daily News:

The city Parks Department has rejected all three proposals to host multi-day music festivals at Flushing Meadows Corona Park, the Daily News has learned.

Concert promoter AEG, the force behind the popular Coachella music festival on the West Coast, applied for a permit to have an event at the sprawling Queens park.

MSG and Founders Entertainment followed with applications for the site which housed both the 1939-40 and 1964-65 World's Fairs "Parks reviewed all permit applications thoroughly," said Parks Commissioner Mitchell Silver. "While we are heartened by the interest in one of Queens' most historic parks, our primary concern is ensuring the park is available for the many New Yorkers who call Flushing Meadows Corona Park their backyard."

Officials said large-scale, multi-day festivals had never been held on the grassy areas of the park and were surprised by the number of applications the city received for 2016.

Take over our parkland, please!

From the Daily News:

Several Queens lawmakers are throwing their support behind a controversial plan to rent out Flushing Meadows Corona Park for a Coachella-like music festival next summer, the Daily News has learned.

“The Panorama Music Festival will provide a fantastic opportunity for Queens to take its rightful place as a New York City showcase,” U.S. Rep. Joseph Crowley (D-Queens) said in a statement.

Several promoters, including concert giant AEG, have asked the city for permits to hold music festivals in the sprawling park that hosted both the 1939 and 1964 World’s Fairs. The Parks Department said it is reviewing all of the applications and has not made a final decision on any of them.

But AEG’s Goldenvoice division won over Crowley, along with City Council members Julissa Ferreras Copeland, Karen Koslowitz and Peter Koo, after promising to donate a portion of ticket sales to the newly formed Flushing Meadows Corona Park Alliance.

Did you notice that 2 of these are the same pols who sponsored the council legislation for the amicus brief in favor of taking away parkland for a mall? Why do Koslowitz and Koo want money toward the Alliance that they have been frozen out of?

Does anything these people do make sense?

Katz opposed to concerts in the park

BOROUGH PRESIDENT KATZ ON PROPOSALS TO RENT FLUSHING MEADOWS-CORONA PARK

QUEENS, NY – "Borough President Melinda Katz stated the following in response to questions about applications filed by for-profit organizations recently with the City to shut down major portions of Flushing Meadows-Corona Park to the public in order to accommodate paid-admission events next summer:

“Queens is increasingly becoming a premier destination for entertainment, culture and tourism. While public events of any scale that enhance our borough are encouraged, I take issue when it is at the expense of cutting off public access to our treasured parks like Flushing Meadows-Corona Park, which is enjoyed by thousands of families and residents every week in the summer months. Doing so without a public review process would fly in the face of the very principle behind our public parks, which is space designated for public access and equity.

“The use of our public parks – especially one as utilized as Flushing Meadows-Corona Park – must be coordinated and planned under an official city policy, because the absence of one renders the entire process arbitrary and unfair. There must also be engagement with the affected community and a real accounting of the adverse and residual impacts on the surrounding neighborhoods. Quite frankly, it’s still unclear how limited resources expended for events of such scale would be returned to Queens and its families.

“These proposals to rent out precious public parkland to for-profit organizations for paid-admission events are therefore not acceptable at this time. It has never been done before in Queens, and without a fair city policy approved by the community to properly shape this significant precedent, we should not start now.”

Flushing Meadows-Corona Park hosts thousands of families every week in the summer months, and residents would otherwise be limited in access to alternative space for countless activities like soccer, softball, baseball, tennis, cricket, bicycling, family picnics, BBQs, birthdays, weddings and other special events.

If the applications submitted this week are granted, it would be the first time ever for Queens to lend its treasured public parkland to for-profit organizations for paid-admission events. The dates requested would displace several standing homegrown events enjoyed by tens of thousands of Queens residents including the annual World's Fair Anniversary Festival, the Louis Armstrong Festival and, of course, our beloved Mets."

(I suppose she fails to understand that the Mets are a for-profit organization that uses public parkland for paid-admission events? And she didn't seem to have a problem with a mall and a soccer stadium being built on public parkland, either, so...)

Katz concerned about Coachella

Photo montage by George the Atheist
From the Daily News:

The company behind the Coachella music fest has mounted a huge charm offensive, lobbying city officials for more than a year in the hope of throwing a similar concert in a Queens park.

AEG Live paid $150,000 to a lobbying firm over the past year just to be introduced to city officials.

The entertainment juggernaut plans to meet with Queens Borough President Melinda Katz later this week, after the Daily News reported on the possibility of a Coachella-sized gathering in Flushing-Meadows Corona Park next June.

“My biggest concern is there is no public process here,” Katz told The News Wednesday.

The fest, tentatively called Panorama, would fall two weeks after the Governors Ball and during a weekend when the Mets are playing at Citifield.

Melinda's concert doused by fireboat!

From Rockaway Times:

Last week’s concert at Tribute Park was a bit of a washout, but it wasn’t because of the weather. On a beautiful but breezy Thursday evening, dozens gathered for the Katz concert series event featuring Ddendyl, from Season 6 of NBC’s The Voice, but an accident lead to an early end.

...Ddendyl and her three-piece band started playing under the gazebo of the park. Ddendyl sang some of her original music off of her new EP Lonely Heart, and captivated the crowd with a bit of Johnny Cash, before singing God Bless America, as a fireboat arrived and was supposed to put on a display. The fireboat began to shoot up water after the song finished, which was a beautiful sight at sunset with the skyline in the background, but with the combination of the southeast wind, the tribute turned into an unintentional disaster.

The saltwater blew right into the park, causing people to pack up their chairs, cars along Beach Channel Drive to turn on their windshield wipers, and the band to pack up their soaked equipment, putting an early end to the event. Some stuck around to watch the stunning sunset, despite feeling a bit salty.

Katz perfects the art of shameless self-promotion

Every elected official throws money toward some kind of cultural event in their district. But guess what? It's not their money that funds it, it's money that came from taxpayers.

Never before have I seen an elected official name an event after themselves.

Until now, that is. The Katz Concert Series. I suppose we should just be glad that she isn't the one doing the singing.

Imagine our future...with a whole bunch of illegal signs

If Melinda Katz et al want to revitalize Jamaica, they can start at Hillside Ave and the Van Wyck where 2 corners opposite each other are loaded with illegal signage. I like the Landmarks billboard though. Queens sure has a lot to celebrate in that department.

Forest Hills Stadium experimenting with sound blankets

From DNA Info:

Organizers of a summer outdoor concert series at Forest Hills Stadium said they are experimenting with ways to reduce noise from future performances after receiving complaints from community members.

They have been testing sound blankets, typically used at airports and construction sites, on the fence surrounding the stadium, said Jon McMillan, one of the organizers. They were also considering placing them at the top of the venue.

McMillan said that the group is trying to figure out whether covering large portions the fence with sound blankets is feasible and how to include entrances to the stadium into their sound mitigation plan.

Noise from Forest Hills stadium exceeds permissible levels

From the NY Times:

Before the music came back, most people in the brick townhouses and apartment buildings of Forest Hills didn’t give much thought to the crumbling, steel-and-concrete Romanesque stadium abandoned by the United States Open 37 years ago.

Its $120,000-a-year taxes, waist-high weeds and colony of feral cats were headaches for its owners, the West Side Tennis Club.

But rock shows have returned to the Forest Hills Stadium, with window-rattling sounds that pierce the neighborhood’s calm. Some people have simply left home at performance time. Others hunker down and console weary toddlers, put off homework or S.A.T. preparation, and reschedule family affairs.

The city’s Department of Environmental Protection has recorded sound in excess of permissible levels, and issued a notice of violation this week to the concert producers for the Replacements’ too-loud finale on Friday, which closed a show in which the opening bands had repeatedly been warned to turn it down.

Mansion rented out as illegal hotel and concert hall; DOB sees nothing

For some really strange reason, the following landed in my inbox last week:

from: newyork.undiscovered.talent
to: queenscrapper@gmail.com
date: Thu, Nov 7, 2013 at 2:48 PM
subject: Attn: New York Musician/Singer perform in New York's biggest mansion!

My company is partnering with a large New York Real-estate developer who owns New York's largest mansion it is a 10 million dollar estate! His vision is to rent out this mansion for music events. Here is a link to the location http://www.homeaway.com/vacation-rental/p298342. Our company organizes large scale showcases where local musicians/singers can perform in this mansion. We offer musicians/singers 3 major benefits:

*The opportunity to perform in New York's largest mansion a 10 million dollar estate! The developer we are working with also owns other estates through out New York and nationwide as well. You will have the opportunity to perform at all of these multi million dollar estates. Why is this important? When a music industry executive sees you perform in a crummy bar with few people in the audience they will not take you seriously no matter how talented you are. Music is a business and every time you perform you are advertising your brand. The question is do you want to advertise your brand in a crummy bar with no one there or a 10 million dollar mansion with a sold out crowd? As we grow we are also interested in renting out famous concert halls, broadway theaters etc. in New York and you will also have the chance to perform there as well.

*We will always have a guaranteed large audience because we invite so many people to attend our events such as other local performers, business sponsors, press, music industry executives and other guests. This is an amazing networking opportunity to meet many important people in the music industry and promote your music in a large way! You can even sell your CD's live at the event!

*It is not required but If you have an entrepreneur business mind we also have a way for you to make a large monthly income just to refer other musicians/singers into our network. You do not need to know a lot of musicians/singers we will show you how easy it is to find musicians/singers online. You do not have to sell anyone or even talk to anyone we do all of that for you. You will make money every month just to generate leads for our network, it is that simple. If you see the big picture of our network you will realize there is no other opportunity for local musicians/singers out there like this and our network can grow very big and you can benefit big time!

To join our network there is a small fee of $30 per month but there is no contracts. You can participate for 1 month or every month the choice is yours. I understand many musicians/singers do not want to pay to play but this is a different situation. This is a 10 million dollar mansion we are talking about with a guaranteed packed audience, this is worth a small $30. You will even enjoy wine and chef prepared hors d'oeuvres as well.

No money is due right now if you are interested all you have to do is reply to this email with "Reserve a spot for me". We need your name, cell phone number or home number and your email to reserve a spot. We will email you a link to the location for your review. Once we have all of the acts and sponsors lined up we will meet in Manhattan to answer all of your questions, discuss dates and at that point the $30 will be due. Our goal is to book the mansion for mid November before thanksgiving.

As this sounds like quite a ridiculous scam, I decided it was worth looking into. I tracked down the address of this property - 283 Nugent Street in Staten Island. There have been multiple complaints about this property dating back to 2011.

I forwarded the information over to my "anonymous Staten Island crapcatcher", as said individual prefers to be called. Here's what was uncovered thus far:

"I see a 2 million adjustable rate mortgage in 2007, with another 400,000 at the same time at 13 1/2% with Lopa as the borrower and obligated to occupy the property as primary residence... His mommy co-signed. OOOH- trained by NYS SBDC; he and his brother wanted to become real estate operators, and were taught how to locate funding...classic crap. Brother, btw, operates a "contracting" business, in that he pushes his "designs" but is not licensed to design structures - i.e. neither an architect nor an engineer. He uses the "Dora the Explorer" CAD program... I'm sure there's more: dig deep enough, he's related to Vallone, I'll betcha."

(Note how individual's father worked for the city...)

This house is currently in Council Member and Borough President-elect James Oddo's district. I'm sure he'll be on this like white on rice.

City plans to spray pesticides on concertgoers

So the NYC Parks Dept is co-sponsoring a concert series in Juniper Valley Park. Tonight is "Classic Rock night" and starts at 7pm.

And the NYCDOH apparently doesn't care. They blindsided everyone involved by announcing that they would be spraying the area tonight beginning at 8pm and that everyone should stay indoors.

Great communication work!
