Forest Hills mansion tops $3M

From Curbed:

This 5,000-square-foot mansion in Forest Hills, Queens was built in 2006, after the owners' previous home was destroyed in a fire. As traumatic as that experience must have been, it did afford them the opportunity to design their dream home from the ground up, and the property now sports five fireplaces, radiant marble heated floors, built in speakers, occasional soaring vaulted ceilings, and various outdoor spaces including a balcony, terrace, garden, and patio. Relisted a week ago, it's now asking $3.289 million.

The house was built by 5 different architects each working on their own.

Architects? It looks like a computer designed Mc Mansion. For 3 million , Douglas Manor is a better choice.

Ugly ungainly mess that is a perfect example of Queens taste.

Should make one of the Chamber's architectural awards.

Wow - it's beautful and fits in nicely in the area.

You'd never see that go up in shithole Flooshing. Here it's all orage brick with fat white columns or some tacky stucco number!

What a mess. Bricks and faux Tudor. Rectangular and arched windows. Looks ready for an basement conversion as well. That's good for another 12 people.

I love the green tub and sink.
It's a shag pad man :-D

Compared to some of the bloated tract mansions that are being built in Forest Hills these days, the St. Germain Mansion has some of the Tudor charm of Forest Hills Gardens and a grassy lawn. At the same time, the beige interior walls could use some color and the driveway is a bit too wide for my taste.

The St. Germain mansion is located on 72-16 Harrow Street, on the border of Forest Hills Gardens.

This mansion is also much more attractive than Binh Lam's newly-built brick house at the corner of Continental Avenue and Kessel Street. His property was one of the last remaining undeveloped lots in the area. How it evaded development for so long baffles me.

fake details, and bad proportions. More money than taste.

The prefect new dwelling for our friends from Russia, China, and Eastern Europe.

Looks like the owner started out with plans for a Tudor house and then his lack of taste caused him to go a little crazy. Do architects ever try to rein in their clients' bad taste or do they just nod their heads and design these monstrosities? Malba is full of examples of " if one turret is good then 5 or 6 is better."

I drive by this house on Harrow on my way to work almost daily. Despite comments to the contrary, it fits in quite well with the character of the Gardens, which is primarily Tudor style. I believe the design had to be approved by the Forest Hills Gardens Corporation (the neighborhood is under covenant.) The details aren't exactly to my taste, but at least it isn't a hideous, no-lawn, gated embassy like the kind built in Cord Meyer a few blocks north.

I recall seeing on an old tax map that the lot on Kessel and 71st Ave was owned by a church. Can't recall if it was OLM specifically, but that would make sense.
