Does Bayside need a bigger municipal lot?

From Brownstoner Queens:

Build it higher, and they will come. The Bayside Village BID just received $20,000 to explore converting a municipal parking lot on the corner of 41st Avenue and 214th Place into a multilevel parking structure. A feasibility study, supported by city funds obtained by Council Member Paul A. Vallone, will identify issues, estimate expansion costs, examine local financial impact, analyze the supply and demand for spaces, and determine possible mixed-use options. The revamp would ease congestion mostly for Long Island Railroad commuters, Bayside businesses, and Northeast Queens residents. It would be a multi-year undertaking that would include public meetings with civic groups, advocacy groups, and Community Board 11.

I don't think it needs it. I can always find parking on bell Blvd. They are just trying to turn bayside into another flushing. Its a shame how they are overdeveloping bayside. I've lived here for 30 years and this neighborhood has just become one overcrowded third world country with recent years. But of course leave it up to the NYC government to overpopulate nice areas with third worlders!

A waste of tax dollars. Leave Bayside the way it is. It's been this way for decades. There is plenty of parking on side streets along Bell Blvd. We have always found parking and have been going to restaurants there for years.

Now someone is starting to use their brain. We need more parking facilities not less. This is a step in the right direction. The lack of affordable parking in this city is just as bad if not worse then the lack of affordable housing.

Maybe people are starting to realize that putting bike lanes on every street isn't going to solve our transportation problems.

Why more parking?

The city should remove some parking spaces and install bicycle racks or get Citi Bike.

I'm sure the local politicians would love to bring this progressive idea to Bayside. And the inevitable fistfights between the bike people and car people would be additional entertainment for Bell Blvd, on weekends.

We should have high-rise parking lots all over Queens - it would be good for the businesses.

But don't charge so much. And hire armed guards. LOL!

Vallone got that idea from a series of still-born proposals his family made in Astoria.

A multi-level parking garage is a crime scene waiting to happen.

Do you people even live here? Like seriously if you think bell has good parking your an idiot. bell's parking is always a major pain.

I'm actually pretty happy vallone is doing this. im not even a fan of his, but yes to more parking in that mess of a street.

You can't be this stupid, can you? You do realize that the Bayside BID is the group that came up with the idea, not Vallone. Vallone.simply funded the feasibility study. You morons on this site do a lot of selective reading.

Yup, Bayside has been exactly the same for decades, no changes whatsoever.

Bayside is becoming Flushing East right before your eyes.

I live a few miles south on Bell and go there all the time. I've always found parking within 3 blocks of where I wanted to go. So I don't see the need for this. I think it would be easier to get rid of 8-hour parking at the lot and make it 2-3 hours max. You'd get more turnover (which is what the merchants want anyways).

Even if there was a need I don't know how practical this particular location is. The lot is situated on a weird corner. I'd think in terms of traffic it might not be ideal.

The footprint of the lot isn't so large either, I guess the city could use eminent domain to buy the Donavan's parking lot and a couple of other properties nearby.

Oh and by the way, there's already a neighborhood called East Flushing.

No, there's a neighborhood called North Flushing. It's quite nice, actually.

Traffic is already a mess on those tiny streets once you go north of Northern. Don't encourage more people to come to drive to the area. Plenty of room for people coming by transit, but the roads are packed.
