Because NYC is a world arts capital, and we don't take well to philistines.
This is so stupid, its a waste of space! 8.3 million people living in this city and they want to keep up a huge building which is NOT owned by the graffiti artists! If you want it kept up, then have the graffiti artists buy that WHOLE building or find someone that will sponsor the building for them! This big building can be used for a school or a nice QUALITY supermarket or a warehouse to bring some jobs in here!
You are not from NYC. You would mind your property if you were.
It would be ideal if the artists owned this space. The walls could be kept as they are, the interior could be brought up to code, and LIC would still retain some character instead of being completely bulldozed under and replaced with glass high rises that bring loads of new residents with no new infrastructure to support them.
Sadly though, the developer owns it and legally can do whatever the fuck he wants, since everyone in politics is happy to rubber stamp more high rises for more under the table cash in their pockets.
I must say. The property has been owned by the same people for a while now. And well, if people want to keep it as is, they should buy it. Not tell the owners what and how to do it. Get together with a museum and buy the property. Not cause the owner to pay extra legal fees.

While I don't care for this building, it has become interwoven with the city's cultural life.
It is fair to challenge it's destruction and this may lead to a deal of some sort whereby an entity is able to buy the property and keep it for cultural use.
You sue a bastard to make him come to the negotiating table.
Litigation is not a negotiating tactic, unless you are Donald Trump. The only problem with the legal challenge is that it lacks a legal basis.

"Stonewall" (as you call him) Van Bramer received $10,200 from the Wolkoff family which owns the site. Just go to the Campaign Finance Board's website to confirm this fact.
Apparently he sold his vote for candy money.

It seems clear, after I went to that website, that Van Brainless would rather beg a dollar from a developer than serve his constituents.

Van Bramer strikes me as one of the most reactionary gay men that I know.

I'm usually a champion for private property rights. In this case, the owners are looking for the government to change the zoning.
So I say if the Wolkoffs get a zoning change for this lot, then let that zoning change apply borough-wide to every private property owner with industrial property they want to turn into a residential tower.
If its good for 45–46 Davis Street, its good for all of Queens.
The Wolkoffs painted over the artwork overnight. It's all over the web. And they had police protection while it was being done.
