2013 Primary election results
Good morning! I hope you all are happy waking up in a City that soundly rejected Christine Quinn last night. She came in with 15% of the vote. Bye-bye, Bloomberg lite!
The likely winner without a runoff is Bill DeBlasio. As of last night, he had 40.2% of the vote, with Bill Thompson coming in at 26%. Whether or not there is a runoff, however, let me point out once again that the political careers of Christine Quinn, John Liu and Anthony Weiner are DONE.
Scott Stringer bested Eliot Spitzer in the Comptroller's race and Letitia James and Daniel Squadron will go head to head in a runoff for Public Advocate.
Locally, Melinda Katz soundly defeated Peter Vallone, Jr. and even with the 9% or so of the vote that Tony Avella allegedly took away from Vallone, he still would not have beaten her. So much for Italian power.
In district 19, The latest numbers are Paul Vallone 2,723 votes to Austin Shafran's 2,579 votes with 98% of precincts reporting. Neither Huffington Post nor NY1 has called it for Vallone, although he claimed victory. So, in November, it MAY be Vallone and Republican Dennis Saffran. Will Saffran win because most Dems picked anybody but Vallone? Time will tell. (Apologies for previous mistake. Shafran got WFP endorsement, but NOT their line. He is challenging the election results.)
In the 22nd CD, Costa Constantinides handily beat John Ciafone.
In the 24th CD, Rory Lancman creamed Andrea Veras.
In the 27th CD, it's still a race between Daneek Miller (3,756) and Clyde Vanel (3,360) with 98% reporting.
In the 28th CD, Ruben Wills beat Hettie Powell.
In the 31st CD, Donovan Richards beat Michael Duncan.
And in the 32nd CD, Lew Simon beat William Ruiz.
Also, thankfully, in the 34th CD, which covers mostly Bushwick but half of Ridgewood, Antonio Reynoso sent Vito Lopez packing once and for all.
Sadly, because we are a one-party town run by a political machine, there were no primaries in the 20th, 21st, 23rd, 25th, 26th, 29th or 30th districts and all incumbents ran unopposed.
In kind of a surprise, in Brooklyn, 23-year incumbent DA Charles Hynes was defeated by challenger Kenneth Thompson.
UPDATE:
Tony Nunziato and Phil Ragusa were also reelected as GOP state committeemen.

One Vallone down, now, people, lets all work together to bring the other down.
It would be a big step at bringing our borough out of the wilderness it has wandered for decades.
The people are dancing in the streets in Astoria.
After a long sleep the community is now awakening.
Warning to the new regime: it will never go back.
If you consider that votes for Graziano, Duane, and Crissy were all anti-Vallone votes, then Shafran will still have a lot of support in the general election on the Working Families line. He had support from most of the municipal unions in the primary, so I think that will continue. Since Shafran and Saffran sound so similiar, he should keep stressing the name "Austin" in his ads.
This is serious business - it's time to unite against Stinky.
"Vallone has to face Shafran again in the general election because Shafran is on the Working Families line."
Prediction: Shafran will not campaign on the WF line, but instead will back Vallone against the Republican Saffran. Dem primary losers always back the winner against the Republicans.
So Paul Vallone won the Democratic nomination with 31% of the vote and the guy who came in second with ~30% is running against him in the general? Not such solid footing!
I just can't believe there are that many stupid Democrats in CD19. What happened? They went from Tony Avella to Kevin Kim to the Vallone Crime Family?
Will a Dem ever challenge DA Brown in a primary in Queens? It might be time to strike....
Prediction: NOT THIS TIME. Vallone really pissed off his opponents with the way he campaigned and I wouldn't be a bit surprised if Duane, Chrissy and Graziano backed Shafran in the general.
Paul Vallone is now enemy #1 for more than just Republicans.
Anyone but Stinky?
The triumph of today is the defeat of Ms. Quinn, and a decisive message from NYC that Bloombergism has been, for a long time, the wrong direction for this city.
I know that Paul has his followers but he ran a weak race. If he did not run Vallone would be out.
Great news that Vallone lost! The only down side is that Katz won.
Last night the ignorant sheep came out to vote and won. I didn't realize there were so many of them. What a waste.......
I agree with Crappy. Vallone all but labeled his opponents as criminals who should be indicted - I can't see any of them supporting him. There's no way in hell that Graziano could ever endorse Vallone. Shafran's retailiatory hit pieces against the "Jobs for NY" pro-Vallone ads were especially hard-hitting - I strongly believe he will campaign against Vallone.
I'm very interested to see whom Tony Avella decides to back, since he was very critical of Vallone's negative campaign.
How the fuck did the do nothing Councilman Ruben Wills of District 28 win a 2nd term. No wonder Jamaica is in the shape it is.
AUSTIN SHAFRAN IS NOT ON THE WF LINE! In a disgustingly strategic move, the WFP did not file nominating petitions for Shafran, despite having endorsed him.
Ay, caramba! Thanks for clarifying. So its a head to head between Saffran and Vallone! Let me fix text.
Since Vallone has sold his soul to "Jobs for NY" a pro-development pac that gave him all the money and support for his campaign, get ready, over development coming soon to a neighborhood near you.
I'm happy Vallone lost to Katz. Vallone disregarded the wishes of the community when he supported Pistilli's conversion of the old Stern's warehouse. The community wanted a much need supermarket that would have provided good union jobs and wages. Instead, it got another stucco palace. Good riddance Vallone.

Deblazio should be magnanimous and call the runoff, besides it gives him more time to campaign instead of recount
Very simple, Dennis Saffran is Avella lite
I can't agree with the comment about the supermarket, even though I dislike Vallone. There is a great supermarket right next to Pistilli's development--check it out.
Joe,
I have it from a good source that Ruben Wills challenged the petitions of at least 4 of his opponents. I presume that he was successful, as he only only had one other person to contend with.
It amazes me how the makeup of the Council however, can rest on such small turnouts.
Crappy, any intel on the other GOP State Committee primaries? Haggerty v. Reyes, etc.?
Austin Shafran is not on the ballot in November.
You sure about that? He's challenging the results. There are hundreds of paper ballots to be counted. Lets not put the cart before the horse.
And you'd think in an era of instant info that the committee results would be listed online, but they aren't.
According to Decide NYC:
"In District 19, there is no definitive winner as both Paul Vallone and Austin Shafran hover around 30%"
Let's hope the paper ballots, mail ballots, etc., change the numbers.
All of the Civics and community groups must come out now and boldly/ loudly support Dennis Saffran, who is on the ballot on 3 lines--R, C, and Reform Party! Austin SHAFRAN will not be on the ballot in Nov (unless he miracuously wins with paper/absentee ballots). Remember folks--Dennis Saffran lost to Avella in 2001 by less than 1 % and Avella had run twice before. Saffran is a moderate Republican who is a huge supporter against overdevelopment, will work to preserve our good schools (his two college kids went to PS 98/ MS 67), and he cares deeply about our community. Vallone has run a despicable, disgusting campaign, and is in the hands of real estate developers. WE MUST DO EVERYTHING TO STOP PAUL VALLONE. END THE VALLONE REIGN!!!!
Yesterday would have been ml late brother, Craig's birthday.
John (son-of-a-convicted-bank-thief) Liu's disgraceful performance was a great birthday present for him and waking up today (my birthday) knowing that Liu's two stooges are soon to be sentenced to jail is a great birthday present for me.
In the end the voters did not speak, the SCREAMED!
Get lost, John.
Doug
PS Pay your fines!
I was up late last night listening to the results- so, SO happy that Quinn and Vallone lost! :D
Here is my prediction:
de Blasio is so far left that he will screw up as mayor. Melinda Katz knows this and from today on she will move to the right and build an image as a middle of the road democrat. As borough prez she will have plenty of time to build a five borough constituency and then will announce that she will challenge de Blasio in the primary. By 2017 anything will look better than mayor screw up and she will walk into city hall with huge numbers.
Her only problem might be ridding herself of Curtis Sliwa.
"Great news that Vallone lost! The only down side is that Katz won."
Haha my thoughts exactly.
In District 19... If there is no definitive winner yet, why did Vallone declare victory last night at his victory party??
Saffran is a moderate Republican who is a huge supporter against overdevelopment
Then it will be very interesting to see if "Jobs for New York" runs ads attacking Saffran and supporting Vallone in the general election. After all, it's a common (incorrect) stereotype that all Republicans are in the pockets of business and developers.
"Then it will be very interesting to see if "Jobs for New York" runs ads attacking Saffran..."
I do not know the intricacies of Citizens United but would it be possible for Saffran to have a team of GOP lawyers tie up Jobs For New York with lawsuits and challenges for possible false statements? After all the mailers are advertisements and perhaps a false advertising suit might shut them off for the general election.
In District 19... If there is no definitive winner yet, why did Vallone declare victory last night at his victory party??
If the margin of victory is smaller than the number of absentee and paper ballots, then no one should claim victory. Obviously not every absentee ballot will be for Shafran, especially since there were five candidates - but I don't know how many there are that need to be counted. Just remember how long it took back in 2008 to settle the election between Padavan and Gennaro. Moby hasn't sung yet.
I believe Saffran will run a hard-hitting campaign, exposing Vallone for the lying weasel he is. I am certain he will slam Vallone for the despicable piece he circulated trying to capitalize on the Sandy Hook tragedy! Vallone's Vote For Your Faith piece was also outrageous. And Saffran will hammer home that Vallone will not be a full-time Councilman; his brother Peter and Father Peter, Sr. were not full-time despite what Paul V. said--none of them would deign to live on a councilman's salary. Paul is a lying SOB! Saffran will expose all of Vallone's lies!!!
You think nyc is bad now? Just wait until deblasio comes into office!! Welcome illegal city times 2!!
DeBlasio = Dinkens redux.
All hail the Squeegee Man!
Don't know if anyone noticed this, but Lombardi allegedly had a run-in with one of Chrissy's supporters yesterday at the polling site. His description of Paul Vallone as "someone of the highest moral standing" almost made me choke with laughter.
Lombardi was scared to get beat up by a girl LOL
"Anonymous said...

- yeah, if you like the neighborhood's most rotten fruit and veg department, shipped from Mexico 5 weeks ago, and rats in its basement!
HAPPY EATING!
Of course when Avella bolted and ran he didn't have any idea what the % #s would look like. So what was he thinking!
Paul Vallone is a sham. I was in Bayside tonight and business owners hate him but are afraid to speak out. Please- everyone should broadcast to all of your friends family neighbors to reject Paul Vallone and vote for Dennis Saffran. I sincerely hope that Paul Graziano and Chrissy come out to support Saffran. with some Democratic support Saffran can easily beat Vallone! remember- he lost by less than 1 percent to Avelka a much more credible and likeable candidate! Vote for Saffran
Alas, we meet again.
I was not scared of getting beat up. It was simply a distasteful act and I think everyone should know.
I feel no need to fight as our community has spoken and now we have a true leader who actually has morals.
Councilman Paul Vallone will do well and I wish him luck.
Adam Lombardi was seen and heard lying about things the other candidates have done while he was campaigning for Paul Vallone outside of the polling site. You see, Mr. Lombardi has no employment options other than working for a pol whose ass he kisses. He was desperately hoping that both Vallones would win so that he would have employment options. If Vallone prevails, get ready for Chuck Apelian as chief of staff, Adam Lombardi as communications director and the balloon man as some other lackey.
Quinn blew it when she had to defend herself for not having children. She was practically in tears. Should have just ignored the comment. Then there was her drinking problem too.
Not exactly mayoral material.....
i experinced the 2500 murders in the five boros per year during the left wing /progressive administrations of Koch/Dinkins. this marxist Werner W-B.Di Blasio will take $$$$from the successful and deliver $$$$to the failures in the communities. divide the voters is the marxist credo.
your families safety is in peril if these marxists retain control of the City council and mayoralty.
see Trenton,N.J., Detroit ,Mich.,Phila. P.A.,Newark,N.J.
stop..question ...frisk ...lowers murder s in the minority areas.altough all of Manhattan was dangerous in the 1980'-90's.
Someone needs to hand Adam a lantern.
Those concrete jockey lawn ornaments are becoming scarce these days.
Isn't that a perfect job for the diminutive Lombardi?
Holding the lamp aloft:
"Geetings from Don Vallone, and welcome to his house".
The "mighty" Quinn has been dumped!
The Lord be praised! All you voters do have brains!
Now all she's got to show for her years of kissing Bloomberg's balloon knot, is a brown nose.
Bye, bye, "Clairol" Chrissy.
Ooops, where are my manners?
Bye, bye to you too...Mr. Comptroller, Liu!
I hope that you can land a job somewhere amongst your devoted followers.
Uh, please return your halo, Johnny.
That's city property and you can't take it with you!
Keep a sharp eye on litter box Katz.
She worked for a law firm that specialized in lobbying for developers.
She's also quite handy with a turkey baster.
"Curtis, it's Melinda. I'm returning your (booty?) call"
What's all of this Marxist BS about?
I love Groucho, Chico and Harpo, but I'm not fearful of a Marx brothers take over of our government.
Go out and find yourself a life!
LOL!
Was Karl one of the illegitimate Marx brothers?
Zeppo, and Gummo are almost forgotten.
Did Graziano siphon off the votes that could have made Shafran the clear winner over Vallone?
I don't know where you lived in the 80s or the 90s, but your delusions about "dangerous" Manhattan need to be addressed by a professional.
It WASN'T that bad!
I think you're thinking more about the 70s.
Did Graziano siphon off the votes that could have made Shafran the clear winner over Vallone?
Doubtful. Vallone spent an inordinate amount of time and money attacking someone who was taking votes away from his opponent?
Heh. I guess they're trying to spin it that way, but we all remember big bro declaring that his little bro would win hands down with only one Italian in the race, so Graziano must have hurt Vallone big time.
The "C--T" is gone. Let's all be thankful of that!
Bite me! What really matters is victory.
All I'm rolling over in my mind is this...did the vote that I cast for Graziano have been one vote more tallied towards a clear Shafran victory?
Nevertheless, I cheerfully chose Graziano.
Me, along with Edith Piaf, have no regrets in our life choices.
I would do it all over again, exactly the same way!
Of course Graziano hurt Don Vallone big time.
There's no denying that!
But unlike little David with his sling...a pebble failed to mortally wound the giant Goliath!
Regarding Paul VS Paulo...
I give Paul an "A" for heroic effort!
after Rudy G and his NYPD tacticians cleaned up NYC in the early 90's, the murder rate dropped to about 400-500 per year. and the documents bear this out.
2500-500=2000 murders that did not occur any more.
this is not a joke, except to a marxist...would you live in Chicago presently?
I predict the Graziano and Chrissy supporters will vote for Dennis Saffran in November- they got 28 per cent of the Dem vote, so with their support and other moderate Dem support coming out because they're scared to death of DeBlasio- along with a good Republican/ Conservativevturnout- Saffran can and will win against Vallone in Nov. Stop Vallone and his lies and slanderous attacks on his fellow Democrats. He is a low life
Honk!
CONFUSED! What does this last comment mean?? Are you pro-Valone?? Anti-Vallone??? Please explain...................
