Bike loving hipsters arrested for vandalizing street

From the NY Post:

Police yesterday busted two of the hipster Brooklyn cyclists who repainted whole sections of Williamsburg bike lanes the city had just removed at the request of the neighborhood's Hasidic community.

Quinn Hechtropf, 26 and Katherine Piccochi, 24 -- who surrendered hours after posting a video of the guerilla public-works operation on YouTube -- allegedly used paint rollers and stencils to recreate all the markings that had been sandblasted away.

"We're self-hating Jewish hipsters," Hechtropf joked last night as the two walked out of the 90th Precinct with desk-appearance tickets.
ON A ROLL: Bicycle advocates repaint bike lanes and spray on a cyclist icon after the markings were wiped out along a 14-block stretch on Bedford Avenue in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

"They handcuffed us," Piccochi complained.

Both were hit with criminal-mischief charges as well as a violation for defacing the street.

Sorry, but the hasids get anything they want.............And don't give me the the ant-semetic or stereotype bs.The pols now that when they vote, the block is good for 99%.FACT!

The Hasids will break their heads. They are some tough dudes. I remember some of them attacking a police station up in the Bronx in the 1970's which forever afterwards was known as Fort Surrender.

This is America. This is still America isn't it? The city streets are public and Bedford Avenue is the direct way to to bridge and Manhattan. I say put the damn bike line back and sell discount black paint to the Hasids for their windows if the site of American people on bikes are bothering them. Maybe next they would expect our tax money to build them a nice high wall around their little ghetto?

yes this is america and vandalism is a crime.

Those trustafarians were whining about handcuffs and bench appearance tickets. They should've gotten the Singapore treatment. 30 lashes.

By the way, just because you repaint it doesn't mean that motorists have to obey it. If this kind of thing catches on, no one will be able to tell real from fake lanes and motorists will start ignoring all of them.

Just because you ride a bike, doesn't mean you're a hipster. Do you take everything that the Post publishes at face value? I certainly hope not. Crappy, don't get played by Rupert Murdoch.

What is it about bicycles that bothers the Hasidic community?

Anonymous said...

Douchebag hipsters and the almighty ethnocentric Hasids.

To hell with both of dem.

Frank said...

Whoops. I should have read the full article! Apparently cyclists wear too little clothing...

Anonymous said...

This is the problem with the Hasids - they do not assimilate into the larger culture, and act as if the larger culture owes them something.

The original bicycle lanes made sense. If the Hasids were offended by cyclists wearing too few clothes - then just look the other way. But, instead, they would rather impose on the rest of society, so that they (the Hasids) won't be offended.

Mind you - these people are like the Roma.... Once they settle in a community, their backwards subculture causes problems for the larger community - and there's little one can do about it - except to avoid pandering to them.

But - be careful of politicians. Once they find out that these people vote as a block - then there will be no end to pleasing these small communities for guaranteed votes....

No, but in this particular situation, the subjects WERE INDEED, two hipsters.

Whose side to take... the bikers, which Qcrappers despise or the Jews and other ethnicities who the Qcrappers also hate. Tough decision, but I have to come down on the side of the bikers.

The streets are public property. They should organize a protest where everyone shows up in their bathing suits every day until they fold. Make sure to walk up and down the block so that you are no accused of loitering. Give them a choice - bikes or bathing suits. Don't forget that by law women can go topless in NYC.

Anonymous said...

You will have a lot of badly injured people at that protest. The Hasidim come ready to rumble and they are no bleeding hearts. They won't take prisoners.

omg the bikers are saying they don't want them because of clothing, but it's about safety and parking issues. and if the city takes out the lanes it doesn't give the right to repaint them. i find the bike lanes annoying and in some areas a waste! i never see them being used. in this area it's a safety issue, a lot of school buses and trucks, ride your bikes at the park!

A Better NYC said...

Eventhough the bike lanes are gone you can still ride your bike through this community.

The Hasids can't put a stop to that.

Ride on "Hipsters"...!

Backing the bikers this time.
Exposing hypocrisy and taking action against it gets a thumbs up in my book.

you guys should take the side of the bicylists. While the bicyclists are at least the sons of white people, the hassids have always been jews.

Nope. I mean asians, blacks, hispanics, and the one that hipsters really seem to hate - Jews.

Just because the bike lanes are gone does not mean that you cannot ride a bike through there. Wait till the summer, it should be fun.

Bloomberg caters to these folks like most other POLS because they have bucks and vote as a single block.

Remember they don't like you if you are not them, period.

I LOVE this story! These hipsters are my heroes.

WHY do Americans tolerate these religious fanatics?

Where they live is not THEIR land but OUR land - the streets belong to ALL Americans.

what about people walking down the street? is there a dress code?

The main issue was the loss of parking, not the dress of the hipsters. The Jews have their stores there.

It doesn't matter whether you are for or against the bike lanes. Maybe the voters in the city should be more worried about the powers of the DOT. If they can take or install bike lanes without the community's input or debate, this is what happens. How are the people represented in the DOT decision making process.

Does that really make any sense? The term hipster is thrown around beyond a sweeping generalization and hate Jews??
I think maybe you again take political criticism for something else. I do some hate on here towards Jews from right leaning people who take the NY Post as gospel.

Its been said that the Hasids are like the Jewish version of the taliban. The women are treated bad, the men go cheat on them with prostitutes in Bed Stuy & anywhere in Brooklyn according to some medical\nurse blogs in Brooklyn, and the hasids are violent and quick to sue if they dont get their way.

This civil passive act of spraying the lanes back on is nothing compared to the ideas toted by say the tea party.

It wasn't supposed to make sense. Just as the generalization that everyone who comes to this site is an Archie Bunker doesn't make sense.

"I do see some hate on here towards Jews from right leaning people who take the NY Post as gospel."

If they were taking the NY Post as gospel, they would be pro-Israel. Duh.

I think bike lanes are wonderful - they wouldn't be installed unless the road was wide enough to accomodate them.

I see your comment as quite a spin on what really going on in Williamsburg.

The Hasids are religious fanatics who want to be left alone - that's the bottom line. They'd put up barbed wire around "their terrority" if they could. It's about time SOMETHING happened to inspire people to at least talk about what's going on there. I heard MANY are on welfare too - is that true?

And Crappy before you put your "poor persecuted Jew" hat on again here - understand that MANY hipsters are Jews!

Queens Crapper said...

Bullshit. Some streets are only one lane wide and have a bike lane on them.

Barbara is the type of citizen our Tammany Hall politicians want. Always believe that the government has our best interest at heart.

I think it is fun to hate hipsters, I wonder if that makes me hip or cool.

The streets in Williamsburg are so wide that every summer there are fairs and concerts in the streets.

Detective McNutty is deliberately diverting the conversation AWAY from the social problem.

But our government DOES "have our best interests at heart" when it defends the church-state separation doctrine of our Constitution - does it NOT?

"Hate" is a very strong word - I am truly surprised that a relatively small issue such as this would inspire such strong emotion from anyone.

Anywho - looks like a temporary truce has been called by Mother Nature - too cold tonight for SPEEDOS that's for sure!

You linked excellent commentary.

Although the author stresses other lesser known concerns over the bike lanes, he also does CONFIRM that the Hasids are not too happy with the "immodest" dress of the bikers.

THIS is not a legitimate concern in America. We do not have dress codes.

We DO though share the same frustrations with the Hasids over our Mayor who appears to be always thinking of new ways to get deeper into our pockets.

Having that in common, perhaps will ease the tensions between the two groups.

Crappy - if you can't beat 'em - join 'em. A good bike ride through the streets of Williamsburg will be good for you.

The thing that creeps me out about this is "do it yourself" alterations of the street markings.

This has an ability to get people killed, just like the fad for removal of street signs got people killed when teens thought it was neat to steal "Stop" signs and people went through intersections to their deaths.

The hammer should come down on these guys. They are not the Department of Transportation and motorists should feel comfortable that lane markings have not been changed by pranksters regardless of their purposes.

That's not what happened here though.

As it clearly states in the article, the lines were drawn prior by the city, then removed because of protests from the Hasids, then the Hipsters painted OVER the markings.

Anonymous said...

The bike lanes weren't there when the hipsters painted the lines. They should have been arrested.

Case closed.

Anonymous said: "The bike lanes weren't there when the hipsters painted the lines. They should have been arrested."

English your 2nd language?

Let's read together the news article:

"Quinn Hechtropf, 26 and Katherine Piccochi, 24 -- who surrendered hours after posting a video of the guerilla public-works operation on YouTube -- allegedly used paint rollers and stencils to RECREATE all the markings that had been sandblasted away."

The word "recreate" is the key word here.

(There is also another reference to the RE-PAINTING of the bike lines in the same article if you care to look.)

Real nice. NYC spends millions of our taxes to PAINT bike lanes.

NYC spends millions MORE to erase them.

WHAT BUDGET CRISIS?

Anonymous said...

Looks like Babs is the one with the reading problem.

The bike lanes were not there when the hipsters "repainted" them. They had been removed by the city.

The hipsters therefore were justifiably arrested for their stupidity and vandalism.

My street was two way and now it isn't. I liked it two way but my neighbors didn't, and the DOT listened to them and not me. You don't see me removing the one way sign or painting a line down the street as some kind of retarded protest.
