NYC Revoking More Than 3,000 Housing Vouchers

NEW YORK (AP) -- New York City has to revoke more than 3,000 vouchers that poor residents were counting on to help pay for housing.

The New York City Housing Authority said Thursday it has to void 3,018 subsidized housing vouchers known as Section 8. They had already been distributed to people who were counting on them.

The housing authority said it had to pull the vouchers because Congress cut $58 million from its Section 8 budget last spring. There has also been less turnover in the program and more of a demand than expected.

The housing authority gives out about 100,000 vouchers per year. The average voucher is for $800 a month.

Landlords: Parasites of society.

They'll cry out for an end to government "interference" in the "free market"...but...cry like stuck pigs when threatened with the ending of subsidies that artificially support high rents in down market areas.

Leeches.

Oh well, they'll warm themselves by burning down the city. Perfect to do this in the middle of winter too. I hope they can at least give them plane fare to Miami so they can be warm when they sleep outside.

Lino is suffering the ill effects of brain damage from eating far too much greasy food and driving around looking for illegal aliens to hire.

He read that landlords - the parasites of society - are "crying out for an end to government interference in the free market".

Where in the posting is the word landlord? Or, free markets?

Actually, the real leeches of the world are those who demand that someone else must provide them with all the comforts that they themselves won't work to provide for themselves.

Or, those who serve grease-filled food that is so high-priced that poor people cannot afford to eat there.

You haven't followed this issue..outside of a blog..have you.

AM radio and Fox News kills brain cells. Don't worry "taxpayer" this won't affect you.

Free markets will not solve this problem or we never would have experienced the dreadful slums that were common in this city in the 19th Century. We only have so much buildable space and land is at a premium.

So far I see buildings going up all over the place yet market rate rents have not dropped appreciably and where they have its only at the highest part of the market where affordability is worst.

Just another step to "encouraging" poor people out of this city.

Native New Yorkers are an endangered species.

R.I.P NYC.

the money goes straight to the landlord's bank account.

the landlords are the ones who have been inflating rents that are driving native NY'er's out of town.

Man, I'd love to have seen what a 19th century Welfare State would have looked like.

The "dreadful slums" were superior than the hovels from the Middle Ages. The Industrial Revolution raised the standard of living from the time of the serfs. Child labor was actually good because now the child didn't die. Infant mortality rates decreased.

There also was a venting of the crowded slums in the expansion of the American West. "Go West, young man, go West and grow up with the country." -Horace Greeley (July 13, 1865)

Today, stay on welfare. Get your free food through your EBT card, have the State pay your rent for free, get free health care, free education. It's all free. Free-free-free. Free lunch. And free breakfast. Free dinner at the Senior Center. Free Shakespeare in the park. Wheeeee, it's all freeee!

Ain't life grand? I love America. Who needs money?

The age of consent for sex in 19th Century New York was 12 and child prostitutes roamed the streets.

Favorite places of the poor included, Suicide Jack McGurn's where you could rent a room for your suicide and purchase the means to do so.

Favorite waterfront tavern owners included Hellcat Maggie who was known to clamp her teeth into a patron's ear and drag him out into the street. She also had a jar of severed ears in her bar.

All of these facts are verifiable. Be thankful those days are over.

Are they really over? I'm not so sure.

Yes true and much worse what child labor did to a chance any child had. But some previous regular poster thinks that was a good time for children.
