Attack of the "Cash 4 Junk Cars" stickers in Queens Village

"I took these photo's on the south corner of Hempstead ave and 221 st. It seems that every lamp post, street sign, telephone pole along Hempstead ave, Springfield Blvd, Jamaica Ave, Francis Lewis Blvd, and Hillside ave has these damn stickers on them! Even on the residential streets, they are stuck to the back of stop signs and glued onto telephone poles! THEY ARE EVERYWHERE IN QUEENS VILLAGE, AND THEY ARE MULTIPLYING FAST!!! HHHHEEEELLLPPP!!!" - anonymous

You can't tear the hard signs down because the glue is some tar substance.....

It's all about quality of life, and the vanishing of it.

Good luck with that. With this fucked up city this is way on the bottom of the priority list as where most quality of life issues are. This is a DOS issue and you can file complaints at:

https://www1.nyc.gov/apps/311universalintake/form.htm?serviceName=DSNY+Dirty+Postering

BUT what is the point, when it continues to happen over and over again. I mean if it is this easy to attach this crap to poles and I have seen it on big street signs that hang in the middle of Hillside Ave and 175th, what stop anyone from placing something very dangerous.

Let's fact it, NYC does shit about most things and the culprits do it, hence why it happens all the time with no end in site. I rarely see this on my travels to other parts of the country, though you will see it every now and then, but not like what takes place, especially in the SE Queens area.

I guess another "why bother getting upset" when this fucking city does nothing and most people don't care. It comes to a point, where one finally says, "whatever". That is what has been taking place for years on issues. I mean is it worth getting aggravated about anymore when not a damn thing gets done with the same stories over and over and over again.

Best bet, plan to move out of this overcrowded "can't manage" city, that provides little as far as quality of life with a super high price tag to live in this shit place.

They have somewhat retreated from Central Queens over the last year.

Personally my two coppers is I'd druther get rid of all of those idiotic "Prolife Across America" and "Kars 4 Kids" (that damned jingle!) billboards...if we have to keep them here in the Maspeth/Elm area, they could at least just be for local businesses and the like.

These things are all over every pole not only in Queens Village but all of Queens and Brooklyn. They are really getting out of hand. This is a legitimate quality of life issue that needs to be dealt with.

Hey Schneiderman why don't you do something about this?? Instead you waste time doing press conferences to bring attention to national issues while ignoring your won backyard. Don't let Cuomo dictate what cases you should go after. Have a backbone !!

It is an epidemic. But so easy to prosecute. Who is paying off whom?

This is illegal. I just tear down signs like these, as well as the zillions of Room4Rent (or, more recently, Bedspace for Rent) signs plastered all over lampposts, telephone poles, mailboxes, etc. If anyone gives you sh*t about it, quote to them from page 55 of the DSNY Rules and Regulations. The only signs that should be posted are those pertaining to the Missing or Wanted.

Remove whatever ones you can - they'll keep replacing them for a while, but may taper out eventually. It's a pain to carry cutters around, or to go out specifically to cut them down, but I did it in another borough, and a bunch of the signs disappeared permanently after a while in the areas I kept cutting them from. I expect in some time they'll come back, but isn't it fun to waste these idiots' money they spend having these made?

Also, one of those very thick Sharpies will do nicely to at least rub out the phone number on the stickers you can't peel.

311 will do nothing if you report it to them.

Try your local council person- just don’t go to Paul Vallone because he doesn’t think it’s his problem. When I reached out to his office, his staff felt he can’t address this issue, even though the signs gave phone numbers on them. Since the phone numbers can be out of state, NYC can’t fine them. Really, try calling the number see who picks car up and then fine them! Then you will see a real reduction on the signs but God forbid you think out of the box.

Aren't people complaining about unowned cars littering side streets, never being taken away? Looks like we have a solution.

Crusseau said...

The city wants revenue? There’s a phone number on every one of these. The city should track it down and fine them for every single one of those posters or stickers.

I used a blow torch to peal off a sticker and it was replaced within hours in Woodside and the others just return week after week that we have just stopped.

Why not call the number and arrange for them to meet to pick up a junk car at a false address? Or Paul Vallone's address? Waste their time and resources.

I find the only way to combat these unwanted advertisements is just write "sucks" underneath it.

To the Anonymous poster with a blowtorch: yes, it’s aggravating when these signs reappear soon after you take em down, but as with graffiti tags, you have to keep removing em, over and over again, and EVENTUALLY the taggers/sign-posters will give up...

As for the Room-for-Rent signs, I have tried calling the numbers listed on several different signs to see who was at the other end... usually there was no answer. Once someone did pick up, and when I told her I wanted to rent a room, she immediately hung up on me. Weird, huh?

"Waste their time and resources." Great idea !

It's $100 minimum per violation .

Blowtorch? Forget it. I use a very sharp X-Acto blade. A sharp box cutter will do. Slit, slit, slit and the whole thing slices right off. Easy as pie.

George hurry up before your knife is deemed illegal like in London !

Gee you would think this would be an easy one for Sanitation but we've reported this for years to 311 and nothing is done.To place these signs out of reach they are using cherry pickers so there must be photos to use as evidence as well as the phone numbers on the signs, it would seem to be a slam dunk for Sanitation.Last year Tony Avella said he had photo evidence but never heard anything that was done.

THIS SCAM IS BEING RUN BY OUT OF STATE SCAMMERS. THAT'S WHY OUR AG SHOULD TAKE IT SERIOUSLY. IF HE DOESN'T WANT TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT THEN THE FBI WILL.

Anonymous said...

What kills me is that DSNY will only take them down when a 311 complaint is filed --seemingly for each one. That is a lot of work for the public!!

Anonymous said...

DSNY has issued the following for "illegal posting":

56 violations totaling $8,460 to JUNK CARS INC

90 violations totaling $11,500 to CASH FOR JUNK CARS

Both have addresses within New York.

The issue arises when the Department of Finance refuses to issue enforcement notices to these entities even after the Environmental Control Board requests it.

TommyR said...

311-ing it creates an impetus to work, underpinned by a digital paper-trail - to justify the 2 hours I'm sure they'll say it takes. No sense in working pro-actively, when you're paid the way Muni-Sani/etc are.

This is graffiti.

Saw the guy doing this, a black tow truck with silver letters.they don't care and make it obvious.

Why doesn't Help me Howard do a sting?

"Why doesn't Help me Howard do a sting?"

Forget Howard. Do your own "sting". Like I just did: call the number, give a bullshit or real name, street address, phone number, year and make of vehicle. How 'bout your favorite politician's stats? Have "fun" when these assholes attempt or do show up. A guy by the name of Philip said he'd paid me $200 for the "vehicle". He's going to call my "number" tomorrow to confirm. But - guffaw - I won't exist.

As Mencken said: "It's so much fun to go into the barn at night and scare the animals."

Or NYPD will call it a gravity knife and arrest you.

Warner 34690 Paint & Wall Scraper with Threaded Handle, I use this floor scraper with a threaded handle attached to an extension pole for painting or a threaded wooden broom handle to cut down the signs off the poles. Keep cutting a few times and they will look elsewhere. They target areas where people do nothing about them.
