Steinway Mansion museum idea needs a lot of money

From Crains:

The Friends of Steinway Mansion, a group of individuals, businesses, government officials and community groups, is trying to raise a total of $9 million in stages to purchase the former home of the founder of the legendary piano company and its grounds in Astoria, Queens, and restore them to their former glory.

"The Steinway Mansion is a monument to Gotham's legendary spirit and to its people," said Bob Singleton, executive director of Friends of Steinway Mansion and the Greater Astoria Historical Society.

With all the useless gazillionaires in NYC you think one of them could give back a little.

And this is what's wrong with the uber-wealthy - they're uber-cheap!

I hope the mansion gets saved.
Little by little our history is being lost to greedy developers.

That this building survived the Vallones is little short of a miracle.

What they and their clique did to Old Astoria will be a blot to that community for generations.

Look at the library board of developers and how the staff is treated.

"Many potential buyers who had been intrigued [about] restoring the mansion and living in it changed their minds after driving around the area," said Paul Halvatzis, the Amorelli Realty broker who represents the seller..."

That's the main problem: the immediate neighborhood is surrounded by factories and a sewage treatment plant. One look and yecch they're outta there. You dont see those surroundings in the real estate promotional pix.

Bob Singleton, please tell us why the Steinway Company doesn't purchase their founders' digs.

Why stop with the mansion?

The Steinway were involved with a lot of things that have seen better days.

Steinway Street is a mess, the Steinway branch of the library is a mess, and the Steinway branch of the post office is a mess.

Send that money to something useful: central library capital projects, the Queens Museum, developer tax breaks, and tweeder programs galore...
