Cameras coming to Forest Park

From the Times Ledger:

State Assemblyman Michael Miller (D-Woodhaven) and state Sen. Joseph Addabbo Jr. (D-Howard Beach) allocated $250,000 for surveillance cameras after the NYPD said police had linked the rape of a 69-year-old woman in the park this September to five additional rapes or attempted rapes over the past 2 1/2 years.

The legislators hope the seven surveillance units, which come with two cameras apiece, deter sexual predators from targeting parkgoers.

Miller’s office said the equipment is slated to be installed near the corner of Park Lane South and Woodhaven Boulevard, the intersection of 80th Street and Myrtle Avenue, the junction of Forest Parkway and Park Lane South and the corner of Freedom Drive and Myrtle Avenue.

Cameras are also coming to the park’s visitor center on Woodhaven Boulevard, the Buddy Monument near Myrtle Avenue and Park Lane South and the Forest Park Bandshell, according to Miller’s staff.

Given how many places there are to walk around the park, I don't expect it will do much to deter criminals entering on foot.

Hopefully the cameras can be used to grab the license plates of the cars that illegally drive through the park.

It's a drop in the bucket considering the vast size of Forest Park. But at least coverage will be there for the main sections.

Another Step Towards Orwell's Repressive Society. Tick, Tick, Tick.
We keep giving our freedoms & rights away in the hope of public safety.

And you would do what as an alternative?

"Let's go to the video tape" OR will these cameras be ACTIVELY monitored by (hopefully non-snoozing) observers?

should hire a security guard to patrol all the scum who go there to have sex in the parking lot. yes we see you in your cars in daylight, geniuses.

Anon No. 6: We're sure that you watch very carefully. Anyway, there are security guards on the job already. They're called the NYPD.

Increase patrols (Police, NOT Rent-A Cops), Better lighting and most importantly enforce the Park's 9:00 PM closing time.

Cameras will not work after a few weeks, and then be stolen.

The the politicians and local press will ignore it then respond with total surprise nest year after the next rape.

The wooded area east of Woodhaven closes at dusk, or 9PM, whichever is earlier. The overlook across Metropolitan doesn't close until 1AM I believe, though the playground, basketball court, and handball court close earlier at 9PM

Anon No. 9:

When have cameras operated by the NYPD ever been stolen?

Here's an idea, let honest law abiding citizens carry guns. The perps already have them, so it will just level the playing field.
Armed citizens cost NOTHING and put more fear into perps then the cops do.

To say nothing of other people who might be passing through the area and might get caught in the crossfire. But they're collateral damage, right?
