Its to keep overbearing parents back away from the doors so the kids can get out of the building at dismissal without having to swim through everyone.
Parents need to be behind the line (on the tree side). There is an opening at the gate right there, but its hard to tell in this photo with the gate closed. There is also another line like this on the front side of the buildings (main entrance to PS 91 is on the Central Ave. side).
Actually its for the parents. Believe it or not - they had to draw that line so that parents leaeve enough space for kids and staff to come in and out at the end of the school day...
When i went to school here in the 80s, this line was not needed, mostly because mommy and daddy didnt chauffeur my ass to school every day. I walked. Even then, you walked alone, and if your were escorted by your parents, you caught shit for it. Now when i go by there at dismissal time, its an endless line of SUVs idling all over the place. disgusting.
Yellow when used on sidewalks is used for restricted use areas like loading zones, bus stops and taxi stands, wheel chair ramps, and hazards, such as uneven pavement, garbage cans of burnt coal, no firearm, drug or public use beyond this point.
Markings for Gas and water are usually orange and blue.
It's for parental crowd control at dismissal, but also fire drills. They'd line up 2 classes side by side, boys and girls in 4 lines, two either side of the yellow line.
I'm a little surprised this is even a question on here. These lines were (and probably still are) common around all lower grade schools across the city back when I was going to school in the 80's. I haven't noticed these in awhile so maybe they are less common now - but it was pretty standard around every school in the city back then.
They were pretty fanatical about having fire drills all the time too, I believe because of the incident at PS 5 by 30th ave in astoria, which burned to the ground during a school day. Everyone got out a-ok. (the new ps 234 building is on that lot now, for a long time it was 'the mini school' which was a temporary building for kindergarten classes at PS17 across the street)
You can tell who grew up here and who didn't by the answers above... it was for fire drills and dismissal. Nothing more, nothing less.
As for parents picking up kids now - that was unheard of in my day. You were a sissy if your parents came to pick you up. Very few kids got picked up by their parents. The only people not walking home alone were those who took the school bus with special needs.
Well I grew up here and never saw a line painted down the middle of the sidewalk. In schoolyards, maybe, but not out on the sidewalk. Oh wait, they developed all the schoolyards into more classrooms. That explains it.
the line will be used by the NYPD to test "driving while impaired" Queens marijuana users, when it is voted legal by our stalwart city council and nys legislators.
It's hipster art work - it symbolizes the great line between the haves and have nots, black and white, Democrat and Republican, men and women, etc, etc,....

And those kids from the 80s gave birth to the kids of today - just beefy, husky, big-boned, plus-sized, chunk monsters.

new bike lane on the yellow only.......
Gun free zone !
That's where all of Queens' yellow cowards...with yellow streaks down their backs are meant to stand...
behind the yellow line!
If I had to venture a guess, maybe it's for the kids to line up in the morning before going in?
Probably to line up for the school bus.
Fire Drill Purposes?
Sure, inside the line is the 'drug-free, no guns' zone and on the other side (closest to the curb) drugs and guns are OK.

Probably a new driving lane for cars that go onto the sidewalk to pass all the double and triple parked parents' cars and schoolbusses at dismissal.
Yeah, it's gotta be the school bus line.
Either that or somebody at the DOT had one too many drinks at lunch.

Yep, it's for dismissal and drills as others said above. I went PS17 mentioned above in the 70's and we had it back then.

It's preparation for when they re-name the school Johnny Cash High.
