While Mayor Bill de Blasio was personally coaxing the city’s police union presidents to meet with him, his top aides were on the phones with lawmakers urging them to blast PBA President Patrick Lynch and other officers for turning their backs on the mayor following the assassinations of two of New York’s Finest, DNAinfo New York has learned.

As late as Monday afternoon — the same time de Blasio was speaking with police union leaders to set up Tuesday's détente to possibly mend their fractured relationship — the mayor’s government affairs honchos were privately cold-calling the city’s Democratic delegation of city and state elected officials, asking them to publicly criticize Lynch and those officers who dissed the mayor.

“City Hall wanted me to blast the Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association for turning their backs on him,” a Big Apple legislator told “On The Inside.” “They called up Monday, said they were calling all of us, and that it was our obligation to stand up defending the mayor."

There was an expectation from City Hall that "because they were calling that we should do whatever they ask," the lawmaker said.

And it didn't stop there.

Get-out-of-jail-free cards sold online

Buying a “get out of jail free” card is just a mouse click away — and city officials are horrified.

Police union cards that cops hand out to friends and family free of charge are selling on eBay for as much as $100 a pop, even though the resale of the coveted plastic is strictly prohibited by the unions.

The cards are often used to get out of minor jams like speeding tickets or parking violations — flashing one with your driver’s license is a way of suggesting you’re a member of law enforcement or at least related to someone who is.

“It’s a way for a police officer to vouch for another person,” said City Councilman Peter Vallone Jr. “That type of recommendation shouldn’t be available to the highest bidder.”

But as a Post reporter discovered, purchasing police union cards — Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association, Detectives’ Endowment Association, the Lieutenants Benevolent Association and the Sergeants Benevolent Association are all listed — is as easy as logging on to eBay, charging it to a credit card or PayPal and receiving it in the mail.

Councilman Dan Garodnick (D-Manhattan), another committee member, suggested that the cards be done away with altogether to avoid ethical breaches like the Bronx ticket-fixing scandal, which resulted in charges against 16 city cops.

“Our traffic laws should not be enforced with winks and nods,” Garodnick said. “I don’t know which is worse, the existence of a get-out-of-jail-free card or the fact that the cards are being hawked on the Internet.”

Note the difference in reaction by Mr. Public Safety and Mr. Garodnick. Vallone thinks that it's ok that the friends and family members of cops are allowed to slide when they break the law, while Garodnick doesn't think anyone should.

Crowley exposed as puppet of police union

A confused-looking Queens Congressional candidate got some personal coaching from the head of the police union, Pat Lynch, Friday morning about the NYPD's controversial stop-and-frisk policy — with Lynch whispering advice to her during a press conference that was caught on camera.

City Councilwoman Elizabeth Crowley, who chairs the council’s Fire and Criminal Justice Committee, was holding a press conference Thursday at police headquarters in lower Manhattan in which she received the PBA’s official endorsement for her race for the 6th Congressional district when a reporter asked her whether she supports the NYPD’s controversial stop-and-frisk policy.

“The least we could do is have some gratitude and be grateful for the work that they do,” Crowley answered, ducking the question about the controversial policy, which has come under fire by many council members and civil liberties activists.

Pressed again to clarify whether or not she supports the policy, Crowley froze while Patrolmen's Benevolent Association President Pat Lynch whispered into her ear.

“Support it as a tool,” Lynch said, according to footage of the exchange captured by NY1's camera and mic.

A flustered Crowley then asked the reporter to state her question again.

“I believe our police officers stop when they suspect that there is somebody out there that is up to, you know, no good, so to say,” she said.
