Ebike fire destroys building, kills elderly woman and leaves other tenants homeless

Thomas Rodriguez, a resident of Ozone Park, says he’s lucky his wife, 67-year-old Marie Rodriguez, and their dog Penny are alive after a fire tore through their apartment building Friday afternoon.

“She was ready to jump. Don’t worry, the fire department is here and they’re going to bring up a ladder. They were able to get here. She was more concerned that she couldn’t get the dog out because of the smoke,” Thomas Rodriguez said.

Rodriguez was at work while the FDNY rescued his wife and their dog from the flames. She was taken to Jamaica Hospital for smoke inhalation, but has since been released. The couple lives at the back of a building on 98th Street in Ozone Park.

He says the owner of the building and his 93-year-old mother, Kam Mei Koo, live in the adjacent apartment. Koo did not survive her injuries and died as a result of the blaze, according to police.

“She was a very nice lady. She was to herself. She was 93-years-old. She could barely make it up the steps,” Rodriguez said.

The FDNY got a call at around 1:30 p.m. and says an e-bike was discovered at the scene. On Saturday, fire marshals determined that a lithium-ion caused the fire, which the department says was accidental.

Rodriguez says the owner charged the bike near the entrance of the building by a staircase leading to the two apartments in the building.

“I left this morning for work and noticed the bike was plugged in and I said, ‘Maybe I should unplug it.’ It’s been like that a few times and no problems, nothing,” Rodriguez said. “And you know what I told myself, ‘Maybe I should call my wife and tell her to unplug it’ but I got busy at work.”

So now the people that are involved in this fire are homeless let's see how fast the city Acts to find these citizens a place to stay. Shouldn't they be taken care of before the show called Asylum Seekers and now the new name for them economic migrant take care of our own first

So Koo leaves his bike plugged in, burns down the building and leaves Rodriquez homeless. Yet none of these people should be in this country. "Multi-culturalism" is the biggest own goal in human history.

Caused by Missguided bike zealots

Good that corporate media is hilighting this. Now can they highlight all the innocent people murdered by oversized tanks on our streets.

Are these EBike fires connected to Globalist Sustainability ?

Is there secret technology that exists to know the locations of electric vehicles and to remotely ignite (malfunction) the one strategic to an agenda ?

Bikes are for communists!

Let the woke people figure it out by themselves.

Lithium Ion battery fire is the worst thing you can have.
Nothing will put it out, not even tossing it to the bottom of a swimming pool.
Take a roadway flair and multiply 30 or 80, Worse then burning Magnesium.
These e-bikes need to be illegal, the technology was rushed and wasn't ready

when is the self-vaunted master of the Ozone Park universe gonna do anything about illegal conversions and illegal uses of buildings all over the area?

Whats this got to do with woke? Do you even know what woke is?

Probably just George Soros practicing for his trip to Hawaii.

I am waiting for these electric cars to start going on fire. It is only a matter of time when more cars are on the road and their batteries start breaking down. You never saw his with gas powered cars. Plus how are these batteries helping the environment----they aren't. Wake up people don't listen to all these crazy people trying to promote electric vehicles

>>I am waiting for these electric cars to start going on fire<<

Oh that's coming real soon, all these charging stations offer "quick charge" that really hits these already overworked battery hard.
Its a given the typical NYC user, especially delivery and cab people always in a rush will use Quick Charge
The biggest problem is you never know when lithium ion battery's are going to light up. The reaction of a shorting battery can delay over 12 hours to 2 days.

It will be some spectacular spontaneous combustion, thats because unlike 24 -48 volt e-bikes e-cars use battery banks need to provide around 450-700 volts with peak currents of near 100 amps. (that's why fuses cant be used)
The car makers all want to brag 0-60 MPH in 4 or less seconds and you cant have that with fuses and safety limiting on the battery. (people wouldn't buy them)
The average subway car runs on 660 volts and note the 3rd rail sparks & flashes when they are running normally.
NYC driving conditions have already caused most these battery's into 1/2 life. E-car fires are coming real soon as people working them hard and need to charge them more often. Is some guy with no electronic knowledge delivering noodles going to wait 4 -8 hours or more on a medium or slow charge? A:Hell no.
E-car fires usually take out 2 other cars every direction around them and if those cars are e-cars --Holy shit will you see something!!
Even more fun if electric car e-fire melts through the asphalt and opens a gas line.
With all these restaurant shanty's and planters blocking the streets and corners it could happen, and remember. If people are eating, drinking and dancing in those shanty's fire trucks cant ram them out the way!
They need to stop, go inside, check behind every curtain, under every table & corner first severally delaying the fire response.

The NYC Council people running this city are the dumbest and biggest jackasses on the planet. They have no qualifications to be voting in these E-vehicle matters anymore then going to the witch doctor for brain surgery.

Plus how are these batteries helping the environment-

They don't because the power company's still need to make or buy power from someplace else. Now the e-nuts and e-suckers pay for the electric PLUS the delivery charge for that electric plus the vending fees.

The best thing is hybrids with a small gas engine that runs super efficient and tuned to a fixed RPM. (no up and down) This to assist taking the strain off "buffer hard demand" on the battery's, but also keep battery's from getting hot or going to low. ---That's where all fast aging and trouble begins with all rechargeable battery's.
These delivery people run these e-cars and e-scooters hard, red hot and down till they need to push them. Then WACK them again on quick charge, REPEAT again.
That's why you have fires.
I think no e-vehicle can survive a crowded fast paced city that never sleeps.
Its against the laws of physics with Lithium Ion Technology.
Only a turbine, gas or diesel engine can take such abuse, hot and cold extremes. Lithium Ion hasn't a chance in NYC
