Vision Zero not working in 112th Pct

From DNA Info:

The number of pedestrians hit by vehicles in Forest Hills and Rego Park jumped by 64 percent this year, according to the 112th Precinct which recently launched a safe driving campaign.

In January, 23 people were hit in the neighborhood, compared to just 14 during the same month in 2016, according to the precinct's commanding officer Captain Robert Ramos.

In many instances, pedestrians were hit by cars making turns, police officials said.

the bike lanes have made our streets far more dangerous. the bike riders are for the most part 3rd world delivery boys with 3rd world driving attitude, or our snowflake snobs that think they are entitled and the rest of us are substitute daddy and mommy serving their whims. they casually dive thinking the streets belong to them, when in reality they are dups of developers and their lackeys, the pols.

yes traffic has slowed down because of these regs around the those damn bike lanes and the rest of us are forced to share one lane on Queens Blvd with a million freshly imported hordes of potential Democrats who clog our streets, have social skills one step removed from the nasty short brutish lives of the distant past, ride horns, make erratic turns and speed with wild reckless abandon.

I have witnessed this, not in that precincts area but everywhere. Selfish idiot drivers accelerate when they make turns more than ever. In fact, there has been a handful of these incidents, some fatal, involving buses. Reckless individuals like these would sell their souls to Satan to avoid being inconvenienced by pedestrians and bike riders.

Again, I am not at all a fan of the bike lanes by writing that, but once the DOT starts painting those roads green on Queens Blvd, which I think is already happening, this is going to get worse. Not to sympathize with violators, but when you implement unnecessary infrastructure changes, especially imposed on an area without community support, and not consider the ramifications, it's going to piss people off and exacerbate the situation.

If there are other things Vision Zero has not done to improve safety and curb reckless driving, is the asshole driver proclivities to continue to text and talk on their phones, eat out of dish of food (like chicken and rice which I saw some cabbie do when he honk his horn behind me and tried to sideswipe me with his car) with a fork while steering, running stop signs and swerving around cars in front of them that is about to make a turn or park their cars instead of waiting for the completion of them.

The only thing vision tunnel did was extract money from drivers from light cameras and turn traps in intersections.

These so called victims are just part of the price we must pay for the greater good.

The traffic in the area is a disastrous mess, so the program, in the progressive Mayor's eyes, is working.

We just need to increase the misery factor a bit more, and people will give up on these cars and take their bicycles...

Driving and walking around 71st whether on the Austin or Queens boulevard sides is pretty miserable. I live in Kew Gardens and avoid it unless I can go early in the morning or late in the evening and avoid the crowds. The strip of retail in that area does not have enough space for the amount of people that use it. I can't imagine how much worse it will be when the city gets its way and increases the residential density of these areas. Good luck to us all.

This is no surprise to me. I live there right and definitely feel both ends are to blame. Plenty of pedestrians disobey basic rules and cross against lights and just simply aren't paying enough attention. I can see why being hit by cars turning topped the list as parking here is horrendous and many drivers end up circling around and around several blocks looking for a spot to open up. Obviously this is frustrating and I think the drivers start to make the turns faster to beat others out of getting a spot, and then accidents happen. I don't think deBozo's idea to remove two metered parking lanes in Queens Blvd will help this situation at all as it will clearly clog up the parking situation even further....

More pedestrians crammed into our little vibrant and diverse corner of the world, more frustrated motorists on ever shrinking roadways and clueless people on their iPhones. Good luck cutting the number of pedestrians hit by cars.

Maybe if the 112 would crack down on all the illegal electric scooters, among other things, it might reduce the amount of people getting hit. The scooters go up and down one-way streets the wrong way, up and down the sidewalks and nothing is done about them. Every restaurant on 108 Street has these parked outside the doors on the sidewalk where they are illegally parked and nothing is done. The other day the 112 posted pictures of three of them that they had confiscated. The same day I watched four of them drive right past a traffic control NYPD car from the 112 and they were totally ignored. One was actually on the sidewalk. One went across the sidewalk, used th crosswalk and went down a one-way street the wrong way. And one drove literally 2 feet from the door of the patrol car and was totally Ignored.

Its always been bad but especially that area with all the Bukharian's.
These people drive the black tinted glass Benz's & BMW like maniacs don't care about speed limits or speed cameras. Wont stop when they hit your car take you side mirror off.
Great Neck has the same problem only its wealthy Iranian wives & brat kids causing most the traffic accidents.
They all seem to think Americas laws do not apply to them fighting with everybody including the police when caught.

Not being racist here this is fact's, more than any other NYS licensed to drive immigrant group.
Whats is wrong with these people ?

this will justify the banning of cars on some streets making traffic worse

They are more concerned with catching illegal traffic turns at Yellowstone and Queens Blvd than with catching speeders and jay walkers, Just last week I witnessed a car going 58 mph on Queens Blvd, according to the electronic speed sign by 76 Avenue. Why isn't the NYPD going after speeders?

My 71 year old mother cannot ride a bike or take mass transit to her doctors in Forest Hills. It's more convenient and safer for her to drive there . It's a freedom that ALL Americans enjoy. Don't infringe on our freedom.

Turns out artificially slowing cars and making it difficult to get around - called "traffic calming" - has the exact opposite result; frustrated drivers begin to act more recklessly and drive more dangerously in a desperate attempt to make up for lost time.

You are speaking of "freedom" in a city run by a Communist and a city council filled with socialists...

All traffic needs to stop at the same time at these risky crossings. No traffic turning, no traffic moving. Just pedestrians with the right of way. Can't be hit if all traffic is stopped and no turns allowed. Other states have an all way stop. this is a no brainer and should be instituted immediately at all dangerous crossings and near every school. It would not cost anything and would just require reprogramming the lights to all be red at the same time and putting up a few signs that say no turns on red. Problem immediately solved.

"Other states have an all way stop"

agreed.

What's also needed is more enforcement of drivers running stop signs. This violation might be committed more than speeding and nearly as hazardous.

I can get a summons if I drive in a bike lane, can a bicyclist get a summons if he's in a traffic lane? or for that matter can a bus driver be ticketed if he's out of the bus lane?
