From Power House to craphouse

"I also took a few pictures of what the old Schwartz Chemical building now looks like. They have totally destroyed what had been a really majestic building.
As you can see they removed half of the building and put in a parking lot." - Horrified in Hunters Point

Epic Fail.

I'm both saddened and LMAO. Like, WTF is that. It's like a 'skort' of buildings. It's neither a 'sleek' box condo or an antique loft with an amazing history. Friggin hideous.

They should have demolished everything and built a glass box. Why did they even bother with the old building. Why??!??... botched hack job...such travesty.

Every historic building in Hunters Pt is being bulldozed as the community is being systamically displaced for the Tower People.

Soon, we will have more artifacts in NY from Babylon than from one of our our own communities.

Yet another building they tried to protect by submitting an application to LPC. Rejected of course.

Our fellow preservationists, busy expanding their own districts, hardly give this outrage notice.

Hope to repay your kindness someday boys!

Niedersteins, St Saviours, where oh where will it all end ... ?

The parking lot is temporary. The plan is for another building right next to this one. That old factory was sitting empty and rundown for years, I'm glad they kept the exterior wall and put the place to use with a nice condo building. Of course this is a big improvement. Stop being so jealous of LIC.

Whats worse about this building is what developing it for residences means in the first place--loss of America's industrial preeminence. I am amazed at what Edison, Westinghouse, Telsa, Marconi, and Bell achieved during the last century. Why are no more Americans going into science and engineering?

I worked at the American Society of Civil Engineers for several years keeping degree and enrollment records and the number of foreigners studying in American institutions was skyrocketing while American enrollment fell off the map.

For those who weren't brainiacs, factory jobs offered respectable wages to bread-winning heads of household.

I am convinced that a lot of the crime coming out of Queensbridge is grown men forced into silly childish roles by the lose of decent jobs. Their ancestors left the south to work in these factories.

As a women, I am embarrassed to see out of work men and underemployed men who cannot properly make a home for their wives and children. This is a destruction of the American family.

Mutilated beyond recognition!

Better to have administered a demolition coupe de grace
to this Mc Kim Mead White gem
than to see it survive as a Frankenstein mish mosh!

Why would we be jealous of morons duped into living on top of a toxic stew?

The exterior wall looks like hell with the orange crap they put on top of it. This one may have been better off demolished than bastardized.

Because it's all being out-sourced and drastically regulated. Do you think these gentleman would have been able to run the experiments and such they ran all those years ago in todays age? I think not. Back then taking a risk is how things were discovered and learned! Today it's almost impossible due to so-called safety regulations and massive out-sourcing to other countries so there is no need to learn about these things here anymore. Pretty soon Americans won't be the innovators we once were due to all the govt. intervention and all the regulations and out-sourcing.

It looks like a graduate from the shit-on-a-shingle school of "architecture got his senior class project built!

I hate to see what he does for an encore!

Yeah but those dopes in Manhattan
will get stuck with an eyesore for a change.

The "Friends of Queen Catherine"
tried to sell Queens a colossal bronze visage of ol' Braganza's butt!

Thank God they failed.

they did it for the lulz.

100% better this way than the dilapidated wreck that was there before. Nicely done job of restoring the site to productive use.

Anonymous said...

In no way shape or form can this be considered a restoration.

Anonymous said...

We would have been better off having it torn down than having to deal with this eyesore!

If you visit Rome's early Christian Churches you'll find many of them were built atop temples dedicated to the god Mithras.

One culture builds over another.

Mutatis mutandis.

give me a break . This is the best thing to happen to LIC.
Stop your bitching.

Anonymous said...

That's exactly what they said about the Citicorp building.

Anonymous said...

The best things to happen to LIC were the Queensboro Bridge and the extension of the subway from Manhattan. Not a yuppie condo project that makes a mockery of LIC history.

Amen brother!

At least you all don't hide your jealousy. You use the term "yuppie" pejoratively, as if being young, hard-working, educated and a professional is a bad thing.

Anonymous said...

No, but being a vapid, self-absorbed asshole more obsessed with restaurants than with your community is.

Anonymous said...

"young, hard-working, educated and a professional"

Plenty of them in working class neighborhoods. You should visit sometime.

I don't see where it's hating on LIC to point out that this building project is really really ugly. It looks like a developer drew it himself after a couple of drinks. Sure that plant sat there empty for years, but that's no reason to turn it into this.

That building is terrible. It doesn't even make sense. The materials bear no relation to the existing structure. Why did they bother with those silos on the side?

It could have been a beautiful project, and it certainly isn't.

"I don't see where it's hating on LIC to point out that this building project is really really ugly."

Because those duped into buying here are in denial and trying to convince the rest of us that their shit sandwich is actually filet mignon.

That hedious building is huge. Pray that it doesn't turn into rentals or even worse, gov't sponsored afforable housing.

Instead of subsidizing developers, how about they lower prices so the middle class can actually afford it.

EZ credit buyers better pray for neighbors with vested interest.

City Corp. may be forced to sell off their LIC green "Pickle" building shortly.

Anonymous said...

I hope it isn't as badly built as the Citicorp building that had the solar panels on the shady side of the building or the other Citicorp site that had to be retrofitted after it was built because a strong wind could have leveled it and taken out a good chunk of midtown.

Anonymous said...

Actually, Citi sold that building aready to Tishmen-Speyer or Related, I believe, around the time they built the buiding across the street from the "pickle". they currently rent space and have their name on the building but don't own it.

This craphouse went rental.

I recently looked at apartmenst there, they are beautiful. Much nicer than the ant farms that are now dotting the water front.
its beautiful on the inside. My question is, is it really toxic? or is it just as toxic as everywhere else in LIC?

I just wanted to know if there was amandated clean up?

thanks
