Lobbyist Joe Crowley is holding a St. Patrick's Day fundraiser.

NY Post

Joe Crowley, the ex-congressman and former Queens Democratic leader who just landed a job at a powerhouse DC lobbying firm, is holding a St. Patrick’s Day campaign fundraiser March 9 as if he’s running for another office.

After losing in a stunning upset to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in last June’s Democratic primary, Crowley created a new state campaign committee called “Joe for NY.”

The move was a head-scratcher, since Crowley lost to Ocasio-Cortez by 15 points in a Bronx-Queens district that he represented for a decade.

The fundraiser is raising even more eyebrows because Crowley last week stepped down as the longtime Queens Democratic Party chairman after taking a job at the lobbying firm Squire, Patton, Boggs — seeming to remove himself from electoral politics.

Tickets to the March 9 Crowley fundraiser at the Globe Tavern in Sunnyside, Queens, are going for $40 to $250.

Crowley’s family resides in Alexandria, Va., though he has kept a house in Woodside, Queens.

St. Pat's party ends with building collapse

From Eyewitness News:

Two people are hospitalized after the St. Patrick's party went wrong.

One person is in serious condition, the other in stable condition.

Just before 11 p.m. the third floor of the house caved down to the second floor. It happened at 451 Beach 72nd street in the Arverne section of the Rockaways.

Eight people had to be removed from the second floor by ladder.

In all 12 people were hurt, 10 others refused medical attention.

The cause of the collapse is still under investigation, but Eyewitness News has learned there were 9 Building Department complaints against this building between 2004 and 2006.

One of the complaints was structural instability throughout the ground floor due to an illegal renovation.

It is not clear if the owner is the same as when those complaints were made, but investigators will continue to review as they search for the cause of the collapse.

Purse snatch murderers caught

From the Daily News:

Three teens wanted in the fatal Queens stickup of a young wife shot in front of her hubby were nabbed after they struck again on St. Patrick's Day, cops said Sunday.

Two of the accused robbers, Corey Brown and Ian Green, both 17, were charged with murdering Rabia Mohammed, 23, of Hollis, Queens.

Mohammed and her husband were walking near their home about 9 p.m. last Sunday when three men wearing hooded sweatshirts approached them and ordered her to hand over her purse.

Mohammed refused. As she and her husband were struggling with the hooded crooks, two gunshots ripped into her torso, killing her, police said.

Brown, of Brooklyn, and Green, of Queens, were busted for a gunpoint robbery on St. Patrick's Day - along with a third teen, Tiyquon Hodges, police said.

Sight of Bloomberg offends Rockaway Irish

From the NY Post:

Boos followed Mayor Bloomberg yesterday as he walked in the annual St. Patrick’s Parade in Rockaway, Queens — his first Irish outing since he made a quip about their drinking last month.

Many in the working-class neighborhood also got their Irish up over Bloomberg’s cost-cutting initiatives, including his efforts to overhaul the city pension system, fire more than 4,000 teachers, and change the “last in, first out” rule for teacher layoffs.

“Go back to Manhattan!” yelled several parade-goers as Bloomberg and other elected officials strolled the 30-block route along Newport Avenue and Rockaway Beach Boulevard in Belle Harbor.

“Take the A train home!” shouted someone amid the sea of bagpipes, green face paint and Irish flags.

Chants of “Union-buster!” and “Respect the teachers!” trailed after Bloomberg, who was making his 10th consecutive appearance at the parade.

A long day for the commish

From AM-NY:

Kelly was on his way from a breakfast at Gracie Mansion to Mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral around 8:30 a.m. when he saw a woman lying unconscious and bleeding from the head in the crosswalk at 84th Street and Fifth Avenue, said NYPD spokesman Paul Browne.

Kelly’s driver pulled over and he got out of his SUV to offer help.

“The police commissioner used her scarf as a compress to stop the bleeding,” Browne said. “While they assisted her, another detective called an ambulance.”

The woman was taken to New York Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center and was in stable condition yesterday with what was believed to be a fractured skull, said Browne.

The bicyclist who allegedly hit her, 24-year-old Jose Segarra, of Manhattan, stayed at the scene after the accident and was issued summonses for improper brakes, no reflectors and no lights.
