Burglar breaks into a home and complains that there isn't enough "free" stuff to steal. Unbelievable.
The squatter will get NO jail time!
All the squatters defense attorney has to do is claim he's a poor innocent victim of poverty, his mother couldn't afford food as a child, no father, the system failed him blah blah blah.
The squatter is also a minority, possibly an immigrant (legal or not) and that's more automatic points for a get out of jail free token.
Now if a working class person with a college education, some in the bank, income tax returns did that they are disqualified from claiming ignorance & poverty and GET JAIL TIME + pay big $$$ restitution, must file for bankruptcy in some cases.
They also don't qualify for free public defender
I'm 95% sure this is what will happen like most deadbeats:
The judge is FORCED by state guidelines to cut the "poor innocent victim of poverty" squatter loose, likely with probation.
If the judge does not follow NY state guidelines and locks him up, it quality's for an immediately appeal. That evening or next day a 2nd new assigned judge cuts the squatter criminal loose.
You can not leave a house alone, trust a real estate person or rent to a tenant in New York. A homeowner has no rights, housing court is all liberals who HATE homeowners & landlords.

If this happened in Manhattan, Bragg would’ve given him another free pass and two Yankees tickets, while arresting and home 0wner again.
