Council member sneaks in street renaming for fake park for his favorite lobbyists

Streetsblog

It’s all in the name.

The 26-block car-free open street on 34th Avenue in Queens is officially a park after the City Council voted Wednesday to officially dub the strip Paseo Park.

The name — which means "stroll" in Spanish — is a nod to the diverse community of Jackson Heights, which ranks last in the city in green space. Community members created the new public space in 2020 in the depths of the pandemic.

"Thirty-Fourth Avenue Paseo Park is the incredible story of a community coming together during a crisis to create new open space, filling it with families, music, and joy," said Council Parks Committee Chair Shekar Krishnan (D-Jackson Heights).

“As a child of an immigrant, who grew up in Jackson Heights longing for park space, I am proud of how far we’ve come in organizing for Paseo Park," said Luz Maria Mercado, board chair of Alliance for Paseo Park.

"I love that our Spanglish nickname for this vital community space caught on and will soon be on maps."

Not so fast Open Plans (lobby that runs the fake news site)

Transportation Alternatives favorite regulatory captured council rep Shekar Krishnan took advantage of a few loopholes in the charter to name 34th ave a "Park" to validate its open streets in a bill for dozens of other street renamings. Which includes one for a crossing guard killed by a truck driver and Tony Bennett. Even though the renaming is only good for one block and not for nearly a mile of streets. Especially a bunch of open streets.

What makes "Paseo Park" also illegitimate is that has no genuine cultural significance either, it's just something an org with ties to bike lobby Transportation Alternative made up. But what makes Shekar's machinations super sleazy is that he's the chair of the parks committee not DOT, so he and his agency captors can make believe it's a park. An 85 million dollar park to be exact.

Shouldn't it be named after some IDF terrorist?

Thank you for telling the truth. This is not what most of the residents want. This closing of 34th ave was done during the pandemic. We all thought it was temporary. Shekar and his group duped us. They took away almost 400 parking spots with the closing of 34th ave and the ridiculous amount of city bike stations. The elderly and disabled are especially burdened. Access a ride drivers will not move the barricades so these people cannot be picked up in front of their building. In he winter they have to hobble to the corner and wait in the cold. Our neighborhood was taken over by gentrifiers who just moved here. We want out neighborhood back.

Finally something the Democrats can be proud of.

These people just never give up. No matter the lies, propaganda they preach, proven wrong 99% of the time. They just hang on hoping to gain traction.

JQ, you do an awesome job. Mega kudos for all you do.

Residents and businesses along 34th Avenue will no longer have to keep their street clean since that will now be the responsibility of the Parks Department.

This is a terrible situation. I live in Jackson Heights where they closed 26 blocks of 34th ave (this Avenue goes to the Grand Central). This avenue is now closed to cars 13 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Access a ride ambulances no longer have access to drop the disabled and elderly in front of their buildings. The DOT placed pylons, giant flowerpots and cement blocks on the street and emergency vehicles are having trouble navigating them. We have videos of this problem. No one is listening to us. This is a tragedy waiting to happen.
Thank you for telling the truth.

This neighborhood used to be so real before all those gentrifiers moved in.
These maligned hipsters want grocery stores that carried organic products like Horizon milk for $6 per half-gallon. Don't let the beard and flannel fool you; at heart he's a gentrified little boy.

TransAlt post is a complete lie, since co-naming the street "Paseo Park" does not make it a park. It is still under the jurisdiction of the Dept. of Transportation, NOT the Parks and Recreation Department. Of course, the description of the community's support and the "open street's" affect on elderly and disabled residents, not to mention car owners - whether elderly and/or disabled or not - is also filled with bias and ignores many of those most affected by this debacle. Horrible P.R. of the worst kind.

Stop voting for these types of Democrats....

@"Stop voting for these types of Democrats...."

Which type of Democrat or Republican should the sheeple vote for? They all seem the same to me, just owned by different corporations, thanks to the corrupt Supreme court.

@"Isn't Socialism great."

Actually, that's capitalism.

"thanks to the corrupt Supreme court" You are brainwashed

Linear Park Luz is a sellout of the highest order. When you have a parking spot and don't use 34th ave for any practical purpose you shouldn't have a say in anything.

@ "Actually, that's capitalism" Really ?
In this crazy new woke world, who knows who’s right and who’s a wrong?
