Cuts to the city’s education budget will be deeply felt in public preschool and summer programs, as well as so-called “community schools” that provide extra services to families beyond what a typical school can offer, Mayor Adams’ administration said Thursday.
The revised plan would shave $547 million off the Education Department’s overall budget this school year — a figure that will grow to $602 million in the 2024-2025 school year and even more in the 2025-2026 year, budget documents show.
“It is about to get really tough,” Schools Chancellor David Banks warned a parent-led education council on Staten Island last week. “The city is in a bad financial situation, the mayor’s been saying. I don’t know if people fully appreciate it.”
Public schools were already headed toward fiscal woe before Adams announced cuts he blamed on the city’s growing cost of housing and caring for migrants.
Many of the educational programs to be trimmed have been buoyed in recent years by federal stimulus. With the end of the pandemic, those funds are set to expire in less than a year — and the city has lacked a plan to save them.
“That money is going away. It’s almost done,” Banks said.
Some $120 million will be saved annually by eliminating thousands of the 37,000 unfilled slots in public preschool programs, which city officials say has been underused by parents and children. Mayor Adams’ staff did not say how many of those seats were on the chopping block, but that decisions would be made with education officials over the coming year.
The Adams administration is also cutting $18 million from community schools over the next two years. Community schools partner with local organizations to provide services not only to students, but their whole families. While kids receive healthcare and mental health counseling, parents can take adult education classes and other services.

Trust me the city has money. They just don't know how to spend it correctly. The DOE wastes so much money it's ridiculous: Bloated bureaucracy with superintendents that do nothing and serve no purpose, teachers floundering in the Absent Teacher Reserve, yet they hire more and more teachers each year, money spent on useless programs, schools with 4 principals in the building, etc.

Mayor Swagger has no experience whatsoever on managing anything, and the City Counsel is even worse. I love our city, but they are destroying it all levels, literally and figuratively. The list of terrible decisions and Bimbonic vision that our officials have and set forth will further defunct our city. Besides mismanagement and overly top heavy bureaucracy, how many children of illegal aliens are in NYC public schools being paid for by tax paying citizens? There's going to be a percentage of children from non-tax paying illegals that will break the system along with the cost of housing, feeding and providing free medical care for them. Doubtful we will ever get a truthful answer to how many illegals there are or even if our Ruling Class will deign to really count them.
The only real question is if this is a feature, not a bug, or collateral damage our Betters couldn't really give a shit about while implementing some managerial project.

Ned is absolutely correct. NYC schools suck. It's a rare thing to encounter a student with the same last name as their parent/guardian. Many times, the parent (that's right, NOT parents) doesn't even know if their kid is in school, let alone how they're doing. You have about a 25% chance of reaching a parent you're trying to contact them. You get lots of "this number is no longer connected" messages. It's mostly the parents of the kids you don't really need to see (the student is doing well) who show up at Parent/Teacher nights. Those present for the troubled kids either don't show up or send Grandma, Sis, or Cousin to the Parent/Teacher night. These people don't even know that report cards were just handed out or what they reveal about their student's progress. You spend time outlining the problems the student is having and suggesting some remedial solutions--knowing you're basically wasting your time, as the suggestions probably won't be followed.
The administration has made it virtually impossible to suspend students, making teachers fill out a mountain of paperwork to justify each one. Students know this and act out with absolute impunity. The administration also forbids teachers to give lower than a certain grade, even if the students never show up to class. I think it's hardly fair to have only a 10 point difference between a truant and a kid working their tail off for a 65. But having good looking passing statistics is way more important to administrators--they don't want to miss out on their BONUSES, do they?--than the actual academic achievement of the students. Oh, and administrators routinely change grades behind teachers' backs.
One by one, courses have been dumbed down so that the lowest common denominator can pass them. The better students are left bored, as the emphasis is to get the barely breathing over the finish line. Make for great future dumbocrats, don't it?

I taught in NYC public high schools for 25 years and was thrilled to have enough years to retire from the fraud known as the Department of Education. They weren't interested in teachers with actual integrity and did their best to rid themselves of them. And Ned, I am a staunch conservative--about 180 degrees away from your accused "pro socialism, activist, gay, liberal".
