After years of discussions, a new—and controversial—$2.1 billion AirTrain will be built, connecting LaGuardia Airport with the LIRR and 7 train stations at Mets-Willets Point in eastern Queens.

The Federal Aviation Association approved the plan on Tuesday, giving the Port Authority permission to "proceed with its proposal to construct a rail system to provide a reliable transit option for air travelers and employees at LGA." The FAA also noted it held two virtual public workshops and three virtual public hearings last September, and that 18 "different federal, state and local agencies have provided input throughout the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) process based on their expertise and authorities." (You can see the Final EIS here.)

Governor Andrew Cuomo called the plan a "reliable, efficient, and affordable transit connector worthy of its destination." He noted that years of work has led to this moment and that now, "as we come out of the COVID crisis, our state and our country have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to invest in a resilient, transformative, and interconnected future, and today's announcement is a testament to our 'all aboard' commitment to seizing it, in partnership with the Biden administration and Secretary Buttigieg."

While a mass transit option to LaGuardia has long been a goal, critics questioned Cuomo's particular plan because it actually takes travelers past the airport. In 2015, The Transport Politic created a map showing the routes of various connector plans and suggested that travel times actually increased with this plan.

What kind of schmucks will schlepp their koffers on the farkakte 7 train to get on or off a plane? You'd have to be a real schlemiel to do so.

You can thank a few blocks of Vallonia for this. Originally the el on 31st Street was to go on to North Beach now LGA.

The good news is that the airport will eventually be replaced with residential as it is a big polluter and the waterfront is too valuable.

When that happens this spur will become a lop back to the Astoria el.

As to Vallonia it's in the last gasp. Hipsters are replacing the Hillbillies.

Make that $6 Billion when all is said and done.

Does Cuomo consider this his opportunity to be our modern day Robert Moses?

Homer Simpson will be lead motorman.

Useless without connectivity to Jamaica station. Another blunder.

How do these terrible, impractical, unwanted, wasteful projects get approved?

>The FAA also noted it held two virtual public workshops and three virtual public hearings last September

That's part of it, hold virtual hearings where you can mute all the people opposed pretend they don't exist.

The Sempliciotto sheeple love this !

Cuomo's unwanted projects usually get approved as long as everyone involved gets a big payout from it.

Usually on the taxpayer's dime.

Shame.

ALAS, ALL QUEENS 'Stockholm Syndrome survivors,' political apologists and sympathizers: I've lost earthly count of ALL of the blunders that have sucked taxpayer funded resources into a vortex of profligate, wanton waste and mismanagement. To quote the late, great Yogi Berra (a personal friend, as well as his living grandson, John Berra): ❝It's Déjà vu――ALL over again!❞ Now, STOP me if you've heard this one before, but haven't we 'Placating Passel of Passive Possums' already relived this karmic, 'Déjà vu' nightmare, OVER and OVER AGAIN―― revisited (ad nauseam) by a feckless, UNACCOUNTABLE loop of perpetual mediocraty?

I am flummoxed by the fact that the moment someone at one's local bank overcharges for some unauthorized fee or purchase, the aggrieved party makes an 'Online B-line' to reverse the charges, or for some of the left behind, analog, nonprogrammed types, they actually visit their bramch's 'BANKSTER' spokes-liar to remedy the glitch. But, when it comes to millions――and, YES, even BILLIONS――recklessly squandered by the politically failed gestapo operatives of a ravaging and self-imploding New York State government, the plebeian masses retreat into deafening silence! It's an abuse of power, and 'Taxation WITHOUT Representation' at its most unconscionable! Is THAT what freedom and democracy look and sound like?――the sound of SILENCE?

Godless George is right again. Choice: bags packed, car/Uber/taxi to LGA; no problem. Or, bags packed, get yourself to the LIRR or a subway (somehow), drag your bags on a train or two or three, schlep up to the AirTrain (hope the escalators work), take THAT train to the airport. Who would ever do that?
