Mayor de Blasio defunds affordable housing

The Real Deal

City Council members are fighting Mayor Bill de Blasio’s proposed cuts to the city’s capital budget, saying it will mean a loss of 21,000 affordable apartments over the next few years.

Based on an analysis by the New York Housing Conference, officials estimate that the mayor’s proposed $2.3 billion reduction in the city’s capital budget will delay financing for 5,000 new affordable units and 15,000 affordable and supportive housing units that would have been preserved.

Under the mayor’s proposal, $583 million would be slashed from the Department of Housing Preservation and Development’s capital budget in fiscal year 2020 and $457 million in fiscal year 2021, a nearly 40 percent reduction.

“While the subsequent three years are projected to offset these losses, they are beyond the term of the de Blasio administration,” Council members Vanessa Gibson and Brad Lander wrote in a report released Monday.

The mayor proposed the cuts to help balance the city budget, due July 1, after the pandemic wiped out what is now estimated as $9 billion in city revenue over two years.

But the report calls the planned capital budget cuts a “misguided application of austerity economics” that have “little benefit for immediate budget savings.” According to the report, proposed cuts will also result in the loss of more than 9,000 construction jobs.

During a press conference Monday, Gibson noted that demand for supportive housing is only going to increase in the wake of the coronavirus crisis.

“Housing has to be prioritized,” she said, adding that minority communities have been disproportionately hurt by the pandemic. “They have felt this pandemic the most, and they are going to feel this capital budget the most.”

All I want to know right now is how come Cuomo and Deblasio have such nice haircuts. My hole in the all salon cannot open, as per our supreme leaders' executive orders. I'm sure Kim whatever his name is in North Korea is getting his hair cut, too.

Any odds on a new pandemic from these kids running around? Squandering any chance of the city getting back on its feet with vandalism, police overtime and general disruption of lives? 75% of businesses effectively dead? savings soon to run out and hunger and thugs the order of the day? Sure, lets cut back on police. That guy killed was a real role model for everyone to go nuts over. That is fine. His bros will be on a block near you. Soon.

Of course the media has completely lost its mind and toes a specific story line carefully picking what it wants and ignoring what does not fit within the agenda. This will pass. It will all come crashing down well before the end of summer. So hard everyone's teeth will rattle.
What you see here is liberalism's last frantic gasp. The virus will certainly return with all this silliness, and fearful Joe will not come out of his bunker to fight tha' Man. November is a long way yet, and if you believe that an honest list of voter roles exist I have an Edsel for you to buy. Cheap.

As most of us have suspected, that is for those that have not drunk the kool-aid, the media is totally bonkers on what is really happening. The only reason there is no push back is the wise people have left the city and are no doubt incredulously watching this silly fantasy play out. Oh they might return alright, but every asset they have to contribute to the city's future will be tucked away some place else.

The lets see how far this gang running around like nitwits burn themselves out. Sooner or later, these loons and their enablers in the media will hit a brick wall.

Ummm, say sometime say mid-fall?

"Affordable housing" is a sneaky way to enrich greedy developers who are funding our crooked Dim politicians. It's a joke. The income levels, the rents, the lotteries. Just play the lottery! If you win it, you can live anywhere!

Defund affordable housing? More homelessness and more shelters for people. Nice plan huh.
Now defunding the police department for youth programs and social services? Ok so when you need a cop do ya call the YMCA? God help NYC.
Maybe it’s time for me to move out of this city and maybe even the state.

Stop talking about the developers - they are businessmen (sorry for the gender name to the pc crowd) and they do legal stuff that is permitted by law as passed by your (drums role) elected officials.

Yes, people, there is one source for all your ills. Its them. They all stand around, for example, and talk about Affordable Housing knowing full well that it is out of the reach of most of their constituents.

Its soooo interesting how they are attuned to all sorts of obscure gender designations and ethnicities that most of them need an aide to show them where that voting block came from. But when it comes to Affordable Housing, they hand that term to you on knowing full well you are getting hosed .... and they don't give a flying ( ) which gives you the real constituents they serve.
