City schools will remain open as scheduled during State Of Emergency because of the large amount of students who are homeless

City schools will remain open indefinitely despite mounting coronavirus fears, Chancellor Richard Carranza told a parent group Thursday.

Carranza said the decision was driven by the roughly 100,000 students either living in temporary housing or shelters who depend on schools to provide meals and other programs — and other vulnerable groups, who lean on the school system as a vital social safety net.

That means many students would have nowhere to go and nothing to eat should public schools lock their doors, Department of Education and City Hall officials have argued.

A participant at the meeting of the Chancellor’s Parent Advisory Committee asked Carranza about a petition with about 108,000 signatures demanding a systemwide shutdown.

The schools chief said the DOE would maintain the status quo “until 108,000 epidemiologists” make the same demand.

Carranza reiterated that schools with confirmed coronavirus cases would be addressed on a case by case basis.

Carranza said that the building would reopen after a thorough cleaning.

What a self-righteous, pompous asshole. This guy is a perfect fit to Mayor DumBlasio's cabinet. The schools should be shut as a proactive measure as so many other districts are closing only AFTER a diagnosis.

There's 1.1 million students in NYC public schools, and you're risking all their health. So glad i'm no longer of school age.

If the concern is feeding children then just make it open for food only. Move classes online generally and keep one or two schools in each zone open for food and kids who don’t have access to internet. Don’t encourage all million plus students and teachers to keep going and potentially expose everybody to this thing. Geez.

The point here is to ask, and make public, the response of your local public official to all this (not an aide or a press release, but straight "from the horse's mouth").

Griping to each other does nothing.

DeBlasio will not cancel public schools in New York City because they have become orphanages for the minority underclass. Who will take care of these children? Certainly not their parents.

Weren't they saying repeatedly during the ongoing homeless crisis that there are 60,000 homeless people in NYC?

Now they're saying that there's 100,000 homeless children, not even counting adults.

Have they been hiding the real numbers from us all this time?

While I do think this whole thing really is just overrated, I do think the city is a bunch of hypocrites for not closing the schools. They want everything else closed down like Broadway and sports arenas but they refuse to close down schools. I get the fact that parents do have to work but maybe perhaps give parents the option to send them to the school as a way to watch their kids but skip the curriculum for the day and skip the afterschool activities. I do think that high schools should shut down since by that age, kids can watch themselves. But pre k to like grade 8, maybe just give them the option to send them to school and perhaps maybe set up free fever scans before they are let in or make them get a doctors note before they go. I mean if you're THAT worried about it, then the school can definitely compromise that. Because let's face it, not many employers will give their staff 2 weeks or 3 weeks off just to watch their kids and childcare Is definitely pretty costly especially in nyc. You'll be lucky if your employer will give you 1 week off to do what you have to do. Employers are not that nice anymore.

We, the tax payers, and our children, have absolutely no rights. So, our kids' health and lives will be put at risk for the sake of the ones who are living in shelters. At least stop taking and enforcing attendance so our kids can stay home. Oh, that could negatively psychologically impact the homeless kids!

'60,000 homeless people in NYC'
--------------------------------
Yes, and likely more since 1/2 are Illegals or our own people displaced by illegals living 6 to a room.
Another problem is these feral Illegals from south the border refuse to practice birth control, cant read or write in any language and will be on the taxpayer dole for life.
This is what you get when you have a sanctuary city mayor & Governor inviting all the worlds garbage and problem people here with protection, drivers licenses, healthcare, daycare and other free stuff.
The mayor is not closing the schools because they function more as free daycare centers no longer intended for education.
All thanks to stupid New York voters
