The cost of building a new jail in Kew Gardens could zoom past initial estimates of $2 billion, it was revealed last week.

Already unpopular in the neighborhoods surrounding the proposed site, the 19-story jail is to be funded by municipal bonds whose interest costs were not figured into the projected $2 billion price, civic leaders said after emerging for their first meeting with city officials since the plan was approved by the City Council last November.

“We are not happy campers,” said Sylvia Hack of Community Board 9, who has led the two-year fight to stop the jail from being built.

Hack, CB 9 Chairman Kenichi Wilson, Councilwoman Karen Koslowitz (D-Forest Hills) and Kew Gardens Civic Association President Dominick Pistone were among about a dozen local leaders summoned to a meeting Jan. 16 of a newly formed Queens Advisory Committee in an office building across the street from Borough Hall.

“This is a big deal,” said Wilson, whose board voted unanimously last year to reject the proposal.

“We’re just spinning our wheels trying to get answers,” said Hack.

And this November they’ll all vote for the person with the D after their name.

Who wants to bet Sylvia Hack has been voting Democrat her whole life?

Perfect. They steal Rikers Island (400+ acres) for pennies, saddle the taxpayers and investors with various debts, cost overruns all over the place, perfect version of Tammany Hall 2020.

You need to demand that the local elected officials resign. This is not under the table corruption, this is right out in the open.

Ok, let's see who listens. Why is the prison on Riker's (Rycken's actually)? Hell Gate is fed by five waterways, making currents unpredictable and hazardous, especially for escaping prisoners. That is why Helle Gadt (Big Strait) was Anglicized as HELL Gate. Ok, now tell me, do you like it of prisoners have a safer way of escaping? I guess BlaBlasio does. Ben Ward of Queens, coined the phrase black-on-black crime. As Quinn says 95% of shooting victims, 90% or homicide victims, 70% of robbery victims are black or Hispanic. I know little old black ladies, who worked their whole lives, who are afraid to buy new clothes, and who installed roll-up steel gates on all the openings to their homes. Shame on all of us if we do not protect THEM! If you were a kid growing up and you saw all these honorable people of color around you disrespected in such a way, how would it form your thinking? It all starts with what the kids see around them.

That money could just be spent renovating rikers island. This is such a waste of money.

Exactly. They don't even pretend anymore. In your face, up your ass blatant corruption.

Nothing will stop them as long as NYC voters keep voting Demorat !

They didn't factor in the interest on the municipal bonds that would finance this project? That is incompetence at a stratospheric level. I would use a curse word, but it would only be apt if it was uncensored.

Last anon re: uncensored

There is no censorship here. And all swear words are apt.

Let’s finance transportation improvements first.

This is a standard ploy. Give a lower initial cost and then jack it up after approval when "unexpected" changes occur.

If you still vote Democrat, you really are incapable of learning.

Time to get the feds involved and put an end to the Cuomo/DeBozo empire.

Apparently already the feds started with the NYC school system:

They used a few sad stories about inmates fighting to stress the horrible conditions on Rikers.Don't make sense, you have a secure island with all these facilities there including athletic fields and you want to move them into communities and spend $2 billion for a new building with no athletic fields.Who would want this in their neighborhood?

I don't feel sorry for all these people who are protesting this prison or anything else that goes on in this city. They are cause of this. They voted for DeBlasio, Cuomo. So if they want change they should open their eyes and get some new people in office. We will be in this same situation year after year if they don't vote these clowns out. Open your eyes wake up and stop voting for them.
