BQE to undergo 5-year overhaul

From CBS 2:

The Brooklyn-Queens Expressway is slated for a major rehabilitation project — one that could cause potential traffic headaches for the thousands of commuters that traverse the aged outer-borough roadway every day.

The ambitious $1.7 billion undertaking aims to repair a 1.5 mile stretch of the highway, which features 21 concrete and steel bridges towering over city streets, WCBS 880’s Rich Lamb reported.

“The BQE project, what we’re calling “Sands To Atlantic,” is a huge, challenging, almost once-in-a-lifetime project,” Department of Transportation Commissioner Polly Trottenberg said.

According to the DOT, the rehabilitation plan will work to revitalize the roadway’s crumbling, decades-old infrastructure, repair potholes and improve road accessibility.

The project is slated to begin in two years and will take around five years to complete, Trottenberg said.

I can't remember when the BQE hasn't been undergoing an "Overhaul".
What a joke.

Ambitious indeed. We all know that by the time this project is completed in 2031, the cost will most likely exceed $10 billion.

Will it include bike lanes and greenspaces for events?

What the hell have they been working on for the past 10 years?

This is such a joke. They are always doing construction on this highway. .....it's been undergoing construction for 30 years now. Guess that's what you call job security.

Again. Another overhaul? Unbelievable.
By the time you overhaul it you will just need to fix it up again.

Let's put some bike lanes on the BQE as well!!!!

and the city population will grow by another 2M and they're will be another 1M cars on the road, thus negating any "progress"

Over 1 BILLION DOLLARS PER MILE & 5 YEARS to overhaul 1.5 miles of road seem excessive even by NYC standards.

OK, I know I'm going to take some heat here BUT, as someone who has used this road a bazillion times to go from Jackson Heights to the court complex in Cadman Plaza, I can only say that DESPITE the inconvenience we all know this will cause, IMHO, anything that will improve this ageing and decrepit roadway will be better than what it is now....

They always use the cheapest materials they can find which is why they're always doing construction on it. I recall one time I had to go to Virginia and I left Queens around 330 /4 o'clock in the morning and there was traffic on the BQE on a Saturday morning. I couldn't believe it and the traffic was there because you guessed it, they were doing construction. I don't even bother with the BQE anymore and when I do travel anywhere south of New York I just take the Jersey turnpike to the George Washington and then the major Deegan to RFK avoiding Staten Island the Verrazano and BQE all together(on the way back here). I'll be glad when I can leave this godforsaken city once and for all and not have to worry about the BQE

I hope to be relocated in 3 years.

These problems will be solved when we invent the "teleporter machine" as any Star Trek fan knows.

Never ending construction sounds like the Belt Parkway. It is always under construction and then add in the daily car accidents it is always a dam nightmare to drive.

This could be the inspiration for Trumpy's trillion dollar infrastructure plan.

This racketeering scheme was also inspiration for a classic simpsons episode featuring the legendary Crane brothers (Kelsey Grammar and David Hyde Peirce)

It's a hell trip as it is.
Imagine. 5 years of more hell?
Glad I do not own a car and use the LIRR.
Peace of mind?
Priceless!
