MTA will buy property in order to complete repairs

From CBS 2:

Dozens of people and businesses in Bushwick, Brooklyn are in an uproar over Metropolitan Transportation Authority renovations.

The agency said they have to leave their homes for months so crews can work on an elevated line. And the residents told CBS2’s Ali Bauman a lot of this is news to them.

The overhead maze of the subway off Myrtle Avenue where the M, J, and Z trains converge is unfortunate for residents who live in the middle of it all and will soon have to get out.

“We haven’t heard if it’s actually happening or if we’re gonna have notice to move,” one resident said.

But it is happening. The MTA said 26 homes and two businesses will have to relocate for six to 10 months during M Train renovations. The MTA Board green-lighted the relocation March 23, but weeks later many of the effected residents said the most they’ve heard are neighborhood rumors.

“I would like some notice. We’re just nervous they’re gonna throw it on us and be like, ‘Oh by the way, you have to get out in a month,'” tenant Abby Campbell said.

The MTA told CBS2 they notified residents last week. However, when the tenants at 1156 Myrtle Ave. were shown paperwork minutes from the board’s decision, they said it was news to them.

MTA officials said they plan to offer buying properties from the owners and resell once the project is completed.

"Plans to buy and then resell." Sounds like the MTA is scheming to cash in on the hipsterization of the 'Schwick.

Look, i'm not one to defend the MTA, but MTA is obligated to notify OWNERS. If the TENANTS haven't been given notice, thats on the owner/landlord.

Straighten out the #7 right of way by buying up land, speeding up the trains

WHERE IS THE MAYOR & THE CHIEF OF THE MTA??
I HAVEN'T SEEN THEM DOING ANY PRESS CONFERENCES REGARDING THIS.
THIS ISN'T A MINOR REPAIR LIKE CHANGING LIGHT BULBS OR PAINTING THE WALLS.
HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE WILL BE DISPLACED. SHOW YOUR FUCKING FACES!!

And is the mta going to pay for these people to "temporarily relocate"? Also, you damn well know that it's not going to be for 6-10 months, it'll be more like 6-10 years! So now if they are paying for their relocation, that means that they are going to raise fares yet again within the next year to make up for the "temporary relocating" but once the renovations and relocating is done, they will not lower the fares! Yes, track work needs to be done but there are probably better ways to do it.

Once the properties are sold they will be flipped and bought by developers who are hungry to build more condo's in Brooklyn. KA-CHING!!

This is just more incompetent, uncaring, smug and likely corrupt government employee performance. Again, if this where private industry the contractors would be given a financial incentive to finish early and a severe penalty for finishing late. The managers should have found all of the apt occupants temporary housing and moving services and temporary locations for the two businesses. Instead these MTA shitheads have fucked this up so badly that the whole thing will be challenged in court and some very much needed repairs may be delayed for months or years, possibly risking the lives of the riders. SOMEONE SHOULD BE FIRED AND LOOSE THEIR PENTION.

One more reason for putting tolls on the East River bridges--for the MTA to buy real estate! They need our money!

Likely nothing wrong structurally, and these new trains are 1/2 the wight of the old ones. Dont be fooled by the MTAs bullshit, It could very well be a job security scam demanded by the racketeer unions.
Remember the Mayor is so self medicated and surrounded with appointed idiots who know nothin'aboud nothin. This should not be allowed to proceed with a doped up mentally ill jackass at the wheel

Oh the irony, these are hipsters they are displacing. The axis of government, development and real estate speculation are not just discriminating against rent-stabilized and poor renters anymore. They shouldn't worry that hard because it's likely they will be first on the list to get "affordable" housing in one of the mixed use towers recently built in LIC or by Glen Cove.

Especially the one who is trying to sublet. Too risky to use airbnb I bet.
