The Department of Transportation inspected the location more than six months ago and has notified the property owner of any defective sidewalk conditions. The property owner is responsible for maintaining, repairing and installing sidewalks adjoining their property, according to Section 19-152 of the New York City Administrative Code.
The canopies were installed in February, so what good is a 6 month old inspection? And was the sidewalk cracked back then or not?

Awnings are a DOB violation:
Complaint should be: "ILLEGAL AWNING UP/NO PERMIT"
and DOB Should respond: A9 - ECB & BUILDINGS VIOLATIONS
VIOLATION FILED FOR AWNING ERECTED WITHOUT A PERMIT
DOB referred the issue of a can of peas to the dept of sanitation.
Why doesn't DOT or DOB inspect anything PROPERLY.
This is a "tensile structure" - arguably a marquee or awning or canopy, While the sidewalk is DoT's bailiwick, DoB regulates tensile structures: may want to try contacting the marvelously responsive DoB. Remember to follow up and file a complaint of non-responsiveness. Re. the DoT response, suggest submitting photos via 311 on-line.
There are things that are way more important than tacky red canopies!!

isn't there a code violation called marquee with out a permit? this is more than a canopy.
Report it to your Councilman. See what if anything is done about the matter. The Councilman needs to write letters to all the agencies that may be responsible to oversee the installation of canopies that are encroaching on city property. The Councilman should send you a copy of the letters sent on your behalf.
