New boathouse for Flushing Meadows

From NYC Parks Dept:

"The Boathouse at Flushing Meadows Corona Park has provided visitors with a connection to the water and the park's history (it is one of many 1939 World's Fair relics). Meadow Lake has hosted numerous cultural events including the annual Hong Kong Dragon Boat race, and has provided the community with opportunities to learn sailing and rowing," said Commissioner Benepe. "Thanks to a generous allocation by Queens Borough President Marshall, the Boathouse will feature a new dock built with sustainable plastic lumber, a full interior and exterior restoration, along with a new public restroom."

Thanks to $5.6 million from Queens Borough President Marshall and $441,000 from Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, the 1939 World's Fair Boathouse and dock at Flushing Meadows Corona Park will undergo a full exterior and interior restoration. Along with a renewal of the boathouse's roof, windows and fade, the old wooden dock will be replaced with a wood alternative: plastic lumber. Half of the interior space will be winterized to allow for meeting spaces for groups to use during winter. Public restrooms will be added to the Boathouse's southernmost wing.

Additionally, areas surrounding the Boathouse will be paved to provide disabled access to the building. Under a separate $1.7 million contract funded by $1 million from Council Member Gennaro, $625,000 from a multi-modal grant from the State and $115,000 provided by Mayor Bloomberg, surrounding pathways and relocated portions of the lake edge will be reconfigured to address drainage problems.

By a show of hands, how many of you think that the structure will retain the feel of the 1939-40 World's Fair, especially if Bloomturd has a thing to say? What's next?

Yeah, that Bloomburg guy is responsible! Imagine the nerve of him restoring that piece of crap boathouse from 1939. He's downright evil!

I guess anonymous #2 has never been privy to a NYC restoration project.

Tweed courthouse, anyone?

Spending through the roof and it fell apart right after they were finished.

Huh??? we have just about zero pieces from that fair left. Hell, we only have a small handful left from the SECOND fair.

Is there anything for young people any more? They took away the carnival in Memorial field. They took away the movie theatre on northern boulevard and 160th street.

It seems like if you're not an old fart or Chinese/Korean there's nothing left in Flushing for you.

There's not even a fucking place to buy clothes on main street anymore, unless you like cheap gimmick sweatshop knock-offs.

NOT TRUE!!!

My only question for the elected officials present is why did it take so long? The boathouses of Prospect and Central Parks are constantly kept in top share, and so should our borough's facilities.

Next stop: NYS Pavilion!

Sergey-

Don't you get it yet? If there is no benefit to one of our elected officials, nothing gets done. Methinks that there is more to this renovation than meets the eye. Perhaps there is a "favored" concessionaire who will derive great benefit from this. Maybe our former borough president has a friend in the restaurant business? After all, she is the original Dairy Queen. Right Claire? MOOOO!!!

Why was the historic structure allowed to fall into such disrepair?
