New bill to regulate cell towers

From the Times Ledger:

City Councilman Peter Vallone Jr. (D−Astoria) is calling on the city to allow for greater regulation of cell phone antennas in residential communities as well as giving borough residents more input before a tower is placed in their neighborhood.

His newest bill, proposed earlier this month, would require cell phone companies to alert a community and its elected officials when a new tower would be installed, provide the community board and Council member with written notice before applying to the city’s Department of Buildings for an installation permit and prove that the company had made an effort to install antennas in non−residential areas.

In addition, Vallone’s bill would require each antenna to have an identification number to enable residents to refer to potential concerns related to the equipment.

"....prove that the company had made an effort to install antennas in non−residential areas."

This all seems like BS to me.

A REAL bill, Vallone, would be requiring the NEIGHBOR's approval to install a cell tower on their block.
The DOB will have NO problem issuing permits for this. Duh.

And the company having to "prove" they made an effort to install these antennas in non-residential areas? Pu-leeze.

Are the people of Astoria THAT stupid?

portland oregon is the first city to have adopted a resolution challenging the fcc clause in the 1996 telecommunications act that prohibits health issues as a reason to question the placement of a cell tower. this issue has been gaining steam and many things are happening on the international front where they are removing wi fi from schools and curbing exposure to communities. not in america of course but the people are beginning to wake up to the risks that will overtake tobacco in casualties. check out: http://www.wirelesswatchblog.com

And the "transition" to digital television broadcasting is very unsettling. Is big brother watching YOU?

First of all, Community Boards are only an "adviserly unit" therefore, no one listens to them, and secondly, very few councilmembers listen to their constiuents. We don't have a leg to stand on so get used to tons of towers going up all over Queens and not being able to stop it. BSA should be eliminated because they're killing our communities!!!!!
