A construction worker was killed Tuesday when a delivery truck struck a cherry picker he was on and sent him flying 50 feet to the pavement below, police said.

The worker landed face down in front of the Astoria Diner on Steinway St. in Queens in front of dozens of horrified people.

Two other workers held on for dear life and escaped injury.

The worker, who wasn’t identified Tuesday night, was pronounced dead at Elmhurst Hospital.

The accident occurred shortly after 5 p.m. when the delivery truck heading south on Steinway clipped the cherry picker and started it swinging back and forth, police said.

The two men who survived were in safety harnesses, but witnesses said the victim wasn’t wearing a hardhat.

As disturbing as this event was, the food at the diner was quite good. I had a sushi appetizer, followed by grilled chicken and cous cous, which was excellent. My companion had the mexican chicken salad sandwich which was also good, although the mango chipotle coleslaw was a little runny and made a mess. Kind of like the guy who landed on the sidewalk.

OMG I hope this doesn't hold up whatever's being built there. I am sooo keeping my fingers crossed for a new Thai place!

The two previous posters courtesy www.astorians.com

where the neighborhood might go to hell (but we don't talk about those things) but the restaurants remain front and center.

thank you.

Those buildings really stick out in the middle of the sidewalk.

Construction projects in Astoria take years and years to get finished, then, as in the Pistilli buildings, the new tennants have tear out the apartments and rebuild them from scratch.

That first comment is a classic.

Yes, the first comment is a classic, unless of course it was your kid who died on the sidewalk, then would feel the same way about that remark????

Splattered corpses on the sidewalk are dirty and stinky in the summer!
