Brooklyn landmark's plans in disarray

A deteriorating landmarked Gowanus building is at the center of a standoff between natural food behemoth Whole Foods and the building's owner, the Daily News has learned.

The building at Third St. and Third Ave. has been empty for more than a decade, but neither Whole Foods nor owner Richard Kowalski have moved to repair the 134-year-old building.

A new, 68,000-square-foot Gowanus Whole Foods store was slated to open at the site last summer, but toxins discovered 10 feet below ground have thrown the project into disarray - and with it, the fate of the neighboring landmarked building.

Like St. Monica's church, the owner is expecting a demolition by neglect.
