The Blaz abolishes schools gifted and talented program

 NY Post

Mayor Bill de Blasio is phasing out New York City’s Gifted and Talented program, he announced Friday — bowing to critics who assert that the coveted model is racist.

Current students in the accelerated learning program can stay in their separate schools and classrooms to completion. But new cohorts will be completely eliminated by fall 2022, ending testing for kids as young as four.

The model — which admits roughly 2,500 kids per year — is being replaced by Brilliant NYC, a program offering students aged 8 and up chances for accelerated learning while staying in their regular classrooms with other pupils.

The Department of Education said teachers would identify kids best suited for the new initiative.

De Blasio announced the major overhaul despite being in the final months of his term in office.

The candidates to replace him, Democrat Eric Adams and Republican Curtis Sliwa, have both made clear they did not want to completely eliminate the program, which critics have attacked in part because of the higher number of white and Asian students that gain entry through the exam.

“Brilliant NYC will deliver accelerated instruction for tens of thousands of children, as opposed to a select few,” de Blasio said. “Every New York City child deserves to reach their full potential, and this new, equitable model gives them that chance.”

But critics quickly ripped Hizzoner for making the decision so late in his administration after earlier calls for him to leave it to his successor.

“This is utterly irresponsible and reprehensible,” state Sen. John Liu (D-Queens) told The Post. “This is the worst act I’ve seen under this mayor. And there have been many of them.”

Liu had previously ripped City Hall for failing to engage parents on the polarizing issue — and intensified his critique after Friday’s rollout.

“The problem here is that the Gifted and Talented program has been part of city schools for a long time,” he said. “The premise is that kids learn at different rates. Changing that policy should involve a full public discussion involving all stakeholders. Instead, he chose the easy way out — fiat in the waning days of his administration when they can’t implement anything

Asian students account for 43% of G&T students despite being just 16.2% in the school system. They and their parents put in the hard work to get better grades ! This new Marxist deBozio model is racist ! Prove me wrong...

The only smart think this this basted did in his tenure.
Taxpayers should not be footing the bill for singing & dancing.
Include other arts nobody will pay these kids one penny for.

Its no longer 1970 when you could walk into a record company with a demo tape, casting director, audition and get work.
Those days are gone, gone, gone.

Today the corporations build the "artists" to very specifics to meet what they can sell. They don't give a shit what you learned in school or how talented you are.
For the white, Hispanic and Asian demographic they want cute young male robots, and Tits and Ass for females to sell what THE CORPERATIONs dish out.
Cant sing ? No problem, the computer takes care of that !

These gifted and talented programs are useless !!

It isn’t about the white vs. black.vs. Asian students.

This is about essentially trapping kids at age FOUR via some bullshit “exam” and setting them on a predetermined path.

I started kindergarten in 1961 at PS6M.
At the end of each school year every student above third grade was evaluated by the body of their progress and level in the basics. This determined where you were placed in the following school year.
There was no I.G./S.P. designation till the sixth grade.

This current, more rigid and early tracking seems to have emerged from fear of ‘falling behind” nations like So. Korea –a place where they all but torture their kids through their school career.

I suspect the charter school industry and textbook publishers are also behind this disgrace.

I worked for two years as a common branches per-diem in the early eighties.
There is NO way one can accurately determine future academic accomplishment at age four .When can be done is to impose personal and institutional stereotypes and prejudices on a kid and cripple his/her education before it even gets started.

I had no idea things had gotten so shortsighted in the education system. The current situation is a perversion of the concept of Public Education.

I agree completely with today’s announcement.

Maybe the school administrators would like us to teach their children how to roll a dube, how to steal candy bars, how to break into homes. Yes all these are absurd to teach a child but so is CRT and so is the whole interfering with parents and their children about sexual conduct etc. So to those that are part of the teachers union would you like us to teach your child these things? Are you going to be okay when your child comes home telling you how bad you are and how you should be blah blah blah?

Everybody thinks they're immune until it becomes personal.

Lol, of course you can. Your academic potential is baked in the cake the day you're born (it's called IQ). Now, you can absolutely ruin someone and deny their potential. Say by, ohhhh, putting a smart young white kid into a classroom full of ghetto savages. But EVEN THEN, the white kid is more likely to come out ahead in the long run, because school is mostly a waste of time anyway these days.

What you can not EVER do is take someone who doesn't have the goods -- sufficient IQ -- and turn them into a brain surgeon or Shakespeare scholar. It simply can't be done, even if you spend trillions of dollars on it (which we do, to zero effect). Just like you can't turn a lap dog into a sled dog, no matter how much "schooling" you give it.

Just think of different races like different breeds of dogs, and you'll understand way more about why the world is like it is.

I heard Attorney General Merrick Garland, who recently raised the specter of involving the FBI against parents who express anger over CRT and other issues at school board meetings.
Garland’s daughter is married to Xan Tanner, a cofounder of Panorama Education, which issues surveys to students asking if they are feeling “genderfluid,” and asks, “How confident are you that students at your school can have honest conversations with each other about race?”

At least one district’s contract says all of the personal student data is sent to the company — which is funded by Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg — under a loophole that circumvents a requirement for parental consent by counting the for-profit company as a “school official,” not an outside vendor.

I do have reservations about these programs because I do think they create racism. I think its more about "protecting" (mostly asian) kids now from actually going to school with black and Hispanic kids. I mean let's face it, nyc in general is now most "minority" dominated. I think only 49 percent of the city is white and most of them live in the upper east side or staten Island. And just how many of them actually have kids? So the school system is probably made up of only 25 percent actual white students. But let's look at this, the high school where most Asian kids are closest to, they don't even attend. Flushing high school is only composed of like 10 percent of Asian kids and the rest are either black or Hispanic. Meanwhile, Francis Lewis high school is just as close to Jamaica as it is to flushing. But Meanwhile, 70 percent of Francis Lewis high school is made up of Asian kids and even has after-school "Chinese programs" catering to them. So let's just look at the racism in the schools as a whole. I bet if they put more black kids into Francis Lewis high school, the Asian kids would all be pulled out and put into a "safer" school to "protect" them. Even when I was younger growing up in a predominantly white neighborhood, they used to have special busses to bus the black kids in from Jamaica but when that same school was taken over by the Asian population, those busses stopped coming just so they can cater to the asians. Very racist school districts and very segregated anymore if you ask me. Let the asians go to schools with the black kids just like how they forced the white kids back in the day to go to school with more black kids. Why do are whites only the ones who have to "learn" how not to be "racist"?

@"We failed the first time and studied more and passed the second round.
We did tutoring, studying, and took the effort to push our child."

This basically shows what a farce the G&T system is. It's not for kids who are particularly smart or talented in any way. It's for kids whose parents game the system like this guy. Easy for kids to pass the test if they already pretty much know the answers already. So much for high IQ.

Having pulled my daughter out of one of these programs in our local elementary school I know exactly what it is. They study the same stuff as the other kids, but they get a hell of a lot more home work. I've asked the teacher why the excessive homework? They say it's because the parents keep demanding it.
It's basically robot school.
Kid in => Robot out.

Anonymous said...

@"I do have reservations about these programs because I do think they create racism."

Yes it is racist. At the same time like most parents, I wouldn't want my kid going to school with predominately black kids. I want my kids to learn and not to be bullied. Better have them go to a school with more Asians and a better mix of races. The more Asians in the school, the better the school. Just have to watch out that your kid doesn't turn into a robot.
