Sliwa declares bike lane flame war

 NY Post

Republican mayoral candidate Curtis Sliwa vowed Thursday to end the city’s “war on vehicles” by removing bike lanes and speed cameras — in stark contrast to transportation policies promoted by his Democratic rival Eric Adams.

“This administration, the de Blasio administration, and clearly Eric Adams, if he’s elected, partner with Bill de Blasio, would want to continue this war on vehicles in the City of New York,” Sliwa said at a campaign stop in Manhattan.

The Guardian Angel founder said his approach to bike lanes would be, “If you’re not using it, you lose it.”

“Have the Department of Transportation put a wire out and let’s look at the analytics. Every hour, how many bicyclists are passing by, whether it’s recreational, for work purposes, whatever. And if you’re using it, you keep it,” Sliwa proposed.

“Perfect example, Queens Boulevard,” he said.

“I can’t tell you how many times we’ve had visitation with my two youngest sons, we’ve gone to Queens Boulevard, small businesses have been crippled because there’s no parking as a result of the bike lane and we sit there for like an hour.

I’ve … barely seen a bicycle going in one direction towards the city or in the direction of Long Island. That would have to be eliminated,” Sliwa said.

Yeah, that’ll get him elected. Get those mean and nasty cyclists. They’ve been bullying us sweet innocent snowflake motorists for too long.
Booh hoo!

No speed cameras? So much for the guardian angles fighting crime…
Next candidate…

Wow, actually checking if something is useful instead of blindly advancing a crackpot ideology? No way!

Sliwa is never getting elected. There are too many consummate imbeciles living in NYC, the bike-a-nauts being one prominent sliver of them. It's incredible that Giulianni got elected when he did. And then he saved the city, making it possible for snowflakes, soyboys and cat ladies from across the world to flock here and vote for Progressives, who have now made the city un-livable once again. The circle of life!

Bike transportation is NO SUBSTITUTE for NYC’s INADEQUATE public transportation system...a quick CHEAP fix!!!!

I love this guy, he’s totally getting my vote and I’m not a Republican but this isn’t about party lines, it’s about common sense.

I don't see how the City can keep defending unused bike lanes. The concept is great, but the ones out in Eastern Queens just aren't used. 73rd Avenue was recently destroyed by Cunningham Park with a bike lane, and who does that punish? The Q88 and express bus riders more than the drivers.

Plenty of empty streets in Maspeth except for free car storage.
Silwa should check those out too. Maybe build affordable housing there, convert into a park, swimming pool, playground, parade ground for the local chapter of the Guardian Angels or whatever.

One of the reasons that I will never again visit NYC is the bike lanes. It's creating a traffic nightmare. Bicyclists have no respect for pedestrians or traffic signals. They go in opposite directions, down sidewalks, through red lights, whatever they can get away with. They should be licensed just like the drivers of any vehicle on the street. They should have plates and registration, and insurance, and the police should be able (with the public's and politicians support) stop them, ticket them and confiscate their bike if necessary. No tears for you NYC.

Dam straight !
This shit is not worth the price of 1000s of small business owners getting decimated, deaths, accidents, screaming auto insurance increases and other misery being rammed down car owners throats.
Rid all the bike lanes and melt down all the bikes.
If people cant afford/don't want cars, don't want to use public transportation, don't want to pay a cab, Lyft or Uber the f_ck with them.
They can bike off road in the gym or GET THE F*CK OUT and would be much happier moving to Amsterdam !!

I ride a bike. Even for commuting but mostly for errands. Mainly because I can't afford a car. Frankly, it would be cool if more people ride more but only if they have the stamina and the instincts to ride all the time on these streets.

However, I have no problem at all riding along with vehicles of all shapes and sizes and I especially have no problems with cars parked by curbs where they belong. It's called co-existing, which is a progressive value that a lot of these bike zealots and transportation totalitarians have forsaken considering how progressive they purport to be.

@Ned, JQ

Is not about the bikes. Is about control, agendas, carbon tax, get the public used to the idea of paying for pollution. Build Back Better is real, has nothing to do with the environment, has everything to do with control. Total control.
Own 3 bikes, but for long trips the car comes out.
The New World order is not based on democracy, it will be communist. Has to be.
Of course the rules don't apply to the rulers with their SUV-s, mansions, yachts, planes, bunkers.
They are exempt.

Hmmm, don't be too sure beople are MAD and had enough.
The snowflakes, soyboys and cat ladies said the same thing about Trump. Showed up at the Javits Center with balloons and left sobbing like babies on election night.

At JQ LLC.
Unregistered no insurance bike operators can not co-exist on the streets of NYC with all the cars, pedestrians and intersections. You may be a good bike rider and an exception however that's very rare. Its not fare these bikes cause the accidents leaving the car owners to foot the bills.

1:Require bike operators to have license, reg & insurance (consequences for bad behavior)
or
2: At least remove the expensive NO FAULT insurance component for the cars and make the bike operators pay or insure for any accidents they cause including moving violations and license points.

I don't even have a bicycle? Maybe you are referring to JQ LLC ?
Some of those trikes are really cool though. Maybe you could put a big deposit down on those ones they are building down in Louisiana.

Queens Blvd bike lane gets very light usage by bikes during nice weather days during the bike riding season. Almost no one rides during Winter or hot days during the Summer. Bike lane does get used by electric scooters, mopeds, e-bikes... but they also ride on the sidewalks and streets, adding to the chaos.

Was recently by the Queens Center Mall during the early evening and a young, red-haired White guy was riding a regular bike on the sidewalk despite all the pedestrians. The guy and bike obviously stood out. Bike lane was completely empty.

Curtis is right. Put in bike lanes where people use them. Get ride of them if people aren't. Assess every few years and adjust accordingly.

Transportation Alternatives needs to be banned from politics. They are trying to take away freedom of movement from people by making driving harder.

Joe said...

What is the estimated population of people using these bike lanes, .001% ?
I cant find any info
Sliwa could win in this issue alone, these bike lanes are in very populated areas that lost so many parking spaces, chaos, triple parking and accidents. Must be over 1 million people are pissed (most in Black-Hispanic dense tenement neighborhoods, Deblasio 2.0 Adams needs to win) and I think 1 million super pissed off is lowballing it !

"Transportation Alternatives needs to be banned from politics."
Transportation Alternatives Are a 501(c) (3) not for profit so How come no one ever hit Transportation Alternatives with this:

Organizations described in section 501(c)(3) are prohibited from conducting political campaign activities to intervene in elections to public office. The Internal Revenue Service website elaborates on this prohibition:[57]
Under the Internal Revenue Code, all section 501(c)(3) organizations are absolutely prohibited from directly or indirectly participating in, or intervening in, any political campaign on behalf of (or in opposition to) any candidate for elective public office. Contributions to political campaign funds or public statements of position (verbal or written) made on behalf of the organization in favor of or in opposition to any candidate for public office clearly violate the prohibition against political campaign activity. Violating this prohibition may result in denial or revocation of tax-exempt status and the imposition of certain excise taxes.
Certain activities or expenditures may not be prohibited depending on the facts and circumstances. For example, certain voter education activities (including presenting public forums and publishing voter education guides) conducted in a non-partisan manner do not constitute prohibited political campaign activity. In addition, other activities intended to encourage people to participate in the electoral process, such as voter registration and get-out-the-vote drives, would not be prohibited political campaign activity if conducted in a non-partisan manner.
On the other hand, voter education or registration activities with evidence of bias that (a) favor one candidate over another, (b) oppose a candidate in some manner, or (c) favor a candidate or group of candidates, constitute prohibited participation or intervention.

I wish they took away the bike lane on Northern blvd by the cross island. The bike lane there is really causing so much backup while getting off the parkway. You literally have to wait forever just to get into the second lane because of those stupid dividers they have up now. It is such a safety hazard over there now. These bike lanes are not worth all the trouble. If you really wanted to help climate change then you would want traffic to actually move. If a person is just sitting in their car in tons of traffic, then how is that helping the climate? Let's face it, cars are not going to go anywhere soon. So you may as well do one of two things, build more effective roadways, bridges and tunnels or make public transportation more useful and safer and make them more accessible to people who live where trains don't run and stop making busses have so many damn stops. Why does the q27 bus have to have a stop on every single block during the day hours and when it's not winter time? What? People can't use their legs to walk 5 blocks to a bus stop? And why does the 7 train have to make so many damn stops too? Can't those people walk their asses a few blocks? What they do makes no sense. Then on top of everything else, you keep raising the prices on the LIRR and trains and busses but yet you want to help climate change?? How are you helping climate change if people can't even afford to take public transportation? These politicians are such idiots and a joke. Sliwa I think has the right idea about some things but I dunno. Ill probably vote for him anyway since I can see Adams flipping on his promises since he's been a politician for so long so that sense of flipping is branded into him.

Don't remember TA being a choice the last time I voted not too long ago.
Given your very successful indoctrination on my tax money, let me explain to you, activist and special interest groups enforcing their vision against who, what was voted for is not democracy. When your communist overlords pay for TA to enforce their will on the unsuspecting voters, is not democracy.
I also remind you US of A is a not a democracy. Never was. Is a Constitutional Republic.
Actually that is the really big problem your globalist overlords have to deal with.
Otherwise we already would be Soviet Union 2.0.
For some reason you keep pushing Trump, not sure why, but he used to be a Democrat just like many others. Bloomberg also was a Democrat.
The turd part is your personal obsession, perversion with fecal matter.

Eric Adams is a pathological liar, and smug narcissist who believes his own sloppy lies and cover ups, exactly like his racist supporters, all of whom ignore his carbon copy record of failure that mirrors his 'Dope From Park Slope' pal, Bill de BLASS-hole. I wouldn't trust this Fort Lee, New Jersey transient - even if his slimy, forked tongue was notarized.

If Sliwa doesn't win by a mandate, watch how ALL of the (mostly) White city residents bolt to greener, suburban pastures; that is, the White ones who haven't already fled after the 'PLAN-demic,' 'SCAM-demic' destroyed an entire metropolis in one fell, counterfeit swoop!

Now, the entire city makes hell look like heaven!
