Flushing Meadows playground sprinkler turned into a viral petri dish last July

Flushing Post

Parts of Flushing Meadows-Corona Park have been sanitized following a Shigellosis outbreak that infected 32 people.

In mid-July, during the blistering heat wave, scores of Queens parents took their children to cool down in the water sprinklers across NYC parks.

However, many parents who took their children to Flushing Meadows-Corona Park to escape the heat came to regret their decision.

Within a few days many children became feverish, nauseous, and/or had diarrhea.

The Health Department said in a statement that it investigated a Shigellosis outbreak associated with the park after “several individuals reported symptoms after playing in a playground with a splash pad or a large fountain.”

The Health Dept. noted that there have been 32 cases associated with the park and that it worked with the Parks Dept. to sanitize a number of areas to reduce the risk of Shigella transmission. One section that was targeted was the Playground For All Children, located by 111th Street in Corona.

The Parks Dept., in a statement, said that it “cleaned and disinfected Playground For All Children’s spray shower and other water features to [Health Dept.] specifications. As an additional precaution staff also cleaned and disinfected all other spray showers in Flushing Meadows Corona Park.”

Apparently, lead isn't the only thing in the city parks pipes you have to worry about.

Third world population brings third world problems.

But, hell, they vote Democratic so there are no problems. Now lets all go out and drone incessantly on our real problem, Trump. Right?

Agree with the first comment, we took the kids to the Elmhurst park when it first opened. Beautiful large park with some nice play equipment, it was our 1st and last time. Third world for sure. Kids are in there underwear and nothing else. And not clean underwear you could see stains. It was nasty.

I'm not surprised by this at all.

If you deport them that should clear up the mess.
Change the laws that makes a baby born in the USA a citizen.
I"m so tired of illegal aliens. Please send them all back and before that, stop any government benefits. Dry up the money and they will not come.

No surprise here.
The 3rd world illegal parents of most these kids think its a fancy toilet.
These parents actually wash feet and tell them to pee in the water.
Same shit goes on at the Unisphere.
These things should be salt water with electric chlorinators or at least have some maintenance person drop bromine tabs each day.

Shigella is a common illness in zoo primates caused by feces being re-ingested.

Come on now, this can happen anywhere. My brother owns a very nice motel on the Jersey shore where families come back year after year but every summer he has to drain the pool cause some kid squirted out a piece of poop.

Really? Your brothers hotel sickens 32 kids every summer? How’s he get away with that?

New York is a third world shithole, used to be a diverse city, this is not diversity, this is the politicians ramming as many people as possible into a tiny space. New York was diverse for decades and that was nice, this is block after block of ethnically divided ghettos, just more fuel for right wing politicians to blame others for the failures planned by the elites at the highest levels.

Remember when they would not let you into any store with open footwear because of health rules? Hydatid disease, echinococcosis, tapeworm cysts in major organs, is a public health and economic problem of global proportions. It is caused by open footwear such as sandals, whereby worm larvae burrow into the skin and bloostream. Didn't you read about a number of cases in China where a worm cyst was found in someone's head?
