Parking placard abusers to feel the heat

From AM-NY:

As civil servants continue to illegally park personal vehicles on city streets unticketed, Mayor Bill de Blasio renewed a vow Thursday that he made last May: “We’re going to crack down.”

Safe-streets and good-government activists have long objected to how the vehicles park daily and dangerously around the five boroughs — on sidewalks, in front of hydrants, at curbs, in restricted zones — a practice especially acute near courts, firehouses and police precincts.

“The message is very clear: we’re coming for anyone who violates the rules relating to a placard, or anyone who has an inappropriate placard,” he said Thursday at an unrelated news conference.

Across the city, department-themed hats, vests, union calendars, union-issued placards — which confer no legal status — and handwritten notes are placed on dashboards and amount to impunity to traffic agents and cops, who refuse to ticket brethren.

De Blasio said Thursday that the NYPD’s top transportation cop, Thomas M. Chan, would soon be providing an update of the department’s enforcement efforts.

After de Blasio spoke, his spokesman Austin Finan reissued a statement he gave amNewYork for a story published earlier in the week: that there were 41,931 placard summonses issued last year, compared to 28,269 in 2016.

Great, if this works, they'll be competing for scarce parking spaces with the rest of us.
We don't need less placards, we need more parking spots.

As long as "Traffic Agents" refuse to ticket "Brethren" the illegal use of placards will continue.

So how is Duhblazio going to break the blue wall of silence?
Will you put up cameras to see how many "traffic agents and cops ... refuse to ticket brethren."
Well, if it hasn't worked in the past (wink, wink) how can anyone come up with a viable solution?
Oh, I know!
Put up traffic cameras and issue a summons based on the violator's license plates.
If it can be done on the street why not on an illegal parking place?
How soon do you think this will be implemented?
Aaaaa, Aaaaa -- next May?

Parked in hydrants every nigh on 84th Rd Briarwood. Frustrating when traffic agents give others tickets for other infractions and this “officer” takes one of two hydrants every night.

Go after the little people, not pols with their special license plates.

Some people are just "special" and shouldn't have to look for a spot like the rest of us or have to take public transportation to get to work. They should be able to park blocking sidewalks and fire hydrants. Every Mayor says they are going to crack down on this but nothing changes.

That's all we need, more surveillance of ordinary citizens.

Cops are not brotheren of ticket agents. They may wear the same colors, but are still world's apart. Traffic folks, cops will ticket or arrest you in a heartneat.

In reply to my last comment Put up traffic cameras and issue a summons based on the violator's license plates. If it can be done on the street why not on an illegal parking place?

Anonymous retorted: "That's all we need, more surveillance of ordinary citizens."

And my response to Anonymous is: These violators are not "ordinary citizens." They view themselves as special and above the law. They are knowingly and blatantly ignoring the law. To compound the problem, our "law enforcers" are tacitly allowing them to do so, thus confirming to them their special privilege. If they were viewed by our police officers as "ordinary" they would be ticketing them. And if we parked illegally you can bet your tushie we would be ticketed. Why? Because we are ordinary.
