Shelter residents show up at Steven Banks' house

A shelter resident with a special needs child showed up at Steven Banks' house to tell her heartbreaking story. Another shelter resident spoke as well.

Sunset Park very loudly expressed their unhappiness with de Blasio and their council person, Carlos Menchaca.

South Jamaica residents spoke out about the proliferation of shelters in their community.

To cap off the event, Curtis Sliwa had the crowd in stitches.

I can't believe all the cops on the other side of the street.

Everyone speaking really nailed it, especially Valdes and Sliwa. There was more information coming from them than anything on the local news about this 3 year long scandal.

How do we get NYC out of this law that requires it to shelter anyone who asks? That is what is killing us. Any pols speaking to this untenable issue?

DONT SIT BACK, POLITELY HOUND THEM PUBLICLY AND SHARE THE VIDEO WITH US ON QUEENS CRAP. BELIEVE ME, WITH THESE PEOPLE A BULLSHIT IMAGE IS EVERYTHING THAT KEEPS THEIR DISTRICT IN LINE. PULL OFF THAT VEIL IN FRONT OF THE PUBLIC EVERY CHANCE YOU GET AND THEY WILL GO APESHIT.

TRY IT. ITS FUN. AFTER ALL, NEVER FORGET THEY ARE ON YOUR DIME!

Glad to see that the Maspeth leadership keeps pushing this issue. The outcry has already damaged de Blasio and kept this issue in the forefront. Bravo to Maspeth, that'll teach this idiot Mayor. He underestimated Maspeth's response to shoving shelters down the working class' throats and it serves him right for appointing the ideolog Steven Banks to the Commissioner of DSS.

Part 1:

The MVV Task Force, the power behind the fight against homeless shelters in neighborhoods, especially in Queens, which has been a dumping ground of epic proportions recently, held a rally this past Saturday (12.3.16) in Brooklyn in front of the home of major hypocrite Steven Banks, Commissioner of the New York City Human Resources Administration/Department of Social Services, put in office by the not trusted Mayor deBlasio. Take note, neither of these two officials have homeless shelters in their community, let alone on their block, but like most officials want the hard working task payers, who pay their salaries, to do all the heavy lifting and make the sacrifices. Sacrifices that have been turning neighborhoods into homeless villages with the assorted problems that go with such establishment run by unscrupulous business people (like former City Speaker Christine Quinn, who has got into the “homeless business” with her company WIN & elected officials to make profits off of the homeless). She had he nerve to say in an article (http://www.crainsnewyork.com/article/20160810/BLOGS04/160809844/christine-quinn-new-yorkers-need-to-get-over-themselves-and-welcome-homeless-shelters) that New Yorkers need to get over themselves when it comes to homeless shelters being put on their block, but ask this hypocrite how many shelters in her neighborhood or on her block and the answer will be ZERO. But yet she wants US to take on the burden, just like the Jamaica community has not only taken on the burden of all these homeless shelters, but the waste business (Royal Waste in Downtown Jamaica) and thug auto body shops who have taken over Merrick Blvd and surrounding streets/sidewalks with NO REINFORCEMENT from NYPD and not help from the local elected officials of this community, who seem to also be somewhat silent on the homeless shelter dumping as well.

Part 2:

At the rally were different organizations and representatives of various groups including those from Jamaica and SE Queens, who have finally gotten the wake-up call on this horrible issues and policy of dumping homeless into unfit hotels and causing a HUGE development of hotel building in areas (READ: JAMAICA) that would not normally have hotels, knowing full way that down the road these will be turned into shelters for profit. While the questionable Queens BP, Melinda Katz, talks up Jamaica with the Jamaica Now Action Plan and talks about all the hotel development to make Jamaica the “Airport Village”, she purposely forgets to mention that most of these hotels will be turned into homeless shelters in the future (already several have done just that in the last couple years). I mean why do you think you are seeing small hotel development going on in isolated areas and on blocks with residential housing.

For you folks in Jamaica and SE Queens, WAKE UP. With over 30 homeless shelters, adult homes, supportive housing in our area, more are to come. Already a proposal is in the works with the House of Prayer Church and the FOR PROFIT company, Transition One LLC to put a shelter with single men (many parolees) above the church located at 91-20 146 St next to a Day Care Center and across the street from the LIRR Stuphin Station (https://cleanupjamaicaqueens.wordpress.com/2016/11/26/is-this-how-to-revitalize-downtown-jamaica-another-proposed-homeless-shelter-next-to-a-daycare-center-across-from-sutphin-lirr/). And in the latest Jamaica/SE Queens homeless shelter debacle, Community Board 8 (which shocks me) and Councilman Rory Lancman have approved a proposal to turn the historic former Jamaica Hills Hospital, on Parson Blvd, blocks from Hillside Ave, into affordable housing with a “supportive housing” component to house “homeless single men”, “mentally ill” and “drug addicts”. This would have a HUGE negative impact not only on the Jamaica Hills area, but because of the proximity to the high school, downtown Jamaica & Rufus King Park, will have a negative impact on the downtown area, which already has its share of problematic shelters and drug treatment places (https://cleanupjamaicaqueens.wordpress.com/2016/12/02/historic-jamaica-hills-hospital-may-be-affordable-housing-with-supporting-housing-sounds-like-some-ghetto-project-homeless-shelter-to-many/). Ask Councilman Lancman, who seems to be the driving force behind this, how many shelters in his neighborhood and on his block.

Assembly or Senate has to introduce a bill by an individual member or relevant committee. No one wants to stick their neck out for it, because the senior members who don't have to deal with it in their own constituencies know it would upset the gravy train, and probably tell those whose communities have the shelters not to even think about it if they want machine support in the next primary. But with the wave of federal enforcement in 2015, and with the ascendence of some newcomers into office, you might have a shot of getting the process started if the momentum keeps up.

Maspeth has to start building relationships with other communities encourging them to form real civics not like the bullshit Van Bramer did with Court Sq.

Hey Maspepth, where is Jimmy Van Bramer?

https://www.facebook.com/events/1262817620446049/

oh thats it, building up his Snowflake Coalition for a Mayor run so we get DeBlaz II.

Sorry, Maspeth, middle class white people are so damn boreing - getting trans perverts into young ladies restrooms makes soooo much sense. Now THATS the ticket to becoming Mayor!

After watching these videos I strongly feel this administration has no real solutions to this homeless situation. This administration's goal is to show us how they got the homeless off the streets. Yet provide them no services but is great at creating a very unstable environment for these people. Always waiting for the knock on the door and to be shuffled around from hotel to hotel. This is what you call a solution???
Come on you can do better. I am waiting to hear how Banks wants New Yorkers to take in a homeless families with no relations to them and get paid for it...almost like foster care. He is attempting to do with families who have homeless family members. Yet on the taxpayer's dime.

Multiple people have pleaded with our pols to fight to get rid of the Right to Shelter law. The pols keep sidestepping the conversation. Getting rid of the law is the only way to ease the homeless crisis in New York. We are overwhelmed with other states homeless coming to NYT for free services. Everyone should reach out and demand that your politicians do his/her job.

Maspeth was doing a great job banning together to fight the city, but everyone is now witnessing a major divide unfold on social media. People need to set their egos aside and keep their eye on the big picture.

You get who you vote for. The next few years are going to destroy your town.
Good luck, you getting a shelter, because they don't care what you think and your local vote isn't worth anything

Helping people? That is not the point of these programs. Oh people are helped alright, but not the needy, if you get our ponit.

The Democratic Party no longer cares to help people but use them as pawns so the campaign donors get a nice return on their "investments" - so land is for sale, hotels to rent to the right landlords, services to provide for so the right people to get paid, and employment for all those Democratic supporters.

Propery oners are a pawns for the taxe base to support this madness, as is the underclass as the excuse to keep this farce going. The is no real intention to help them (obviously) but only to provide a backdrop so that money gets into the 'right' hands.

That wasn't a law, it was judicial fiat.

It can be revoked with the passage of a new law overriding it.

Of course, that requires Albany (or City Hall) to get off their asses, which will only happen if you vote the bums out and elect new, hungry legislators.

Let's face it, most people are not going to put up their homeless family members, some of them probably threw some of them out years ago for freeloading and others are not hardly bring in some shady family member, no matter how much they pay you. Hell, I would not take family members in who are not homeless, let homeless family members.

But it is obvious there will be tons of scamming with this stupid shit, because asshole elected officials again do not want to do their damn job that they get paid for, as usual they want to pass the buck and have people "pitch in". None of these dicks would ever make it in the private sector.

As long as our politicians and ex-politicians are making a ton of money from the Homeless Industrial Complex there will be no solutions coming forward from them. All we can do to stop this downward spiral is to keep shedding light on these money grubbing clowns with the hope that someone in authority is honest enough to put them in jail or at least put an end to their chicanery. Keep up the fight Maspeth, great to see you joining forces with the other civic associations. If enough people join this fight and keep making noise it will not be ignored.

HELL NO, JUST TURN THE HEAT UP ON THE BUMS IN OFFICE. A LOT EASIER THAN CLEANING HOUSE AND A DAMN SIGHT MORE FUN.

no! no! no! you got to do it yourself. no one is going to ride in on a white horse. you have to shed light in their face in public at every event. share it with Crappy. make them a laughing stock with your questions. go after the toady media that supports this. believe me if you start doing this the white hats will show up to pick off the low hanging fruit.

Albany has no input in to the city shelters laws. Any Albany pol that says they can stop it it lying. It a city law and your going to get the shelter.

You're just wrong. This was established by the Callahan decision, which turned on an interpretation of Article XVII of the New York State Constitution. This begins and ends in Albany.
