Too many kids in Francis Lewis zone

From the Times Ledger:

Public high schools in the northeastern area of Queens are continually some of the most popular schools in the city, and Francis Lewis High School in Fresh Meadows is at the top of the list. Aside from the city’s specialized high schools, it was the public high school with the highest number of applicants in the city in 2015.

Forest Hills High School in Queens was the second most popular high school in terms of the number of applications, according to information supplied by the city Department of Education. Midwood High School in Brooklyn was No. 3, while Bayside High School and Benjamin N. Cardozo High School, two other Bayside schools, rounded out the top five. According to the DOE data, there were 9,468 applications to Francis Lewis in December.

Marmor also stressed that there was no correlation between the school’s high number of applicants and its overcrowding. Francis Lewis, like several other nearby high schools, has long struggled with overcrowding in its facilities. The school is operating at about 190 percent of capacity, according to Marmor.

He said the high enrollment stemmed from Francis Lewis’ status as a zoned school, offering space to those from the community who apply. Marmor said that about 65 percent of the students were enrolled in the school because there was guaranteed space for zoned students.

I once visited that school on behalf of my nephew and it was filled with animals! Boys running around screaming motherfucka-this, motherfucka-that... and calling the girls bitches.

I've never seen such a bunch of out-of-control sub-humans! Bring back corporal punishment. Impose a 1-child per family rule. Queens is out-of-control, scary and disgusting!

Why do we have to educate these useless thugs?

It's an investment.
You want to pay $60K/year to keep each of them in prison?

Lol ...that's because of too many multi family houses that the asians just so love to build! There are more asians in our schools then china and korea have combined in their schools!

This has been going on for a while

Deportations would go a low way to help the overcrowding problem.

It's very difficult to drive past that school in the morning, because it seems like the precious children can't even walk a block to school - Mommy and Daddy have to double park and drop them off right in front of the school. And because the left lane is "left turn only" onto the Horace Harding, one gets stuck for numerous red lights. All the kids should be dropped off on the side street (e.g., Booth Memorial Ave).

If they were Italian, Irish, or Jewish would you still describe them the way that you did these kids??

Look folks, all high school kids in large packs behave like animals. I went to a private school filled with mostly white kids and they behaved the same way. It's just the nature of being a teenager.

Got that right. Double and triple parked. Also, there should be a traffic cop there to ticket the parents who stop in the middle of the North bound Utopia Pkwy. to let their kids off and then wait until they cross the south lanes.
Several times I witnessed drivers making U-turns over the parkway median from south to north bound lanes.

You do realize that this school is 85 percent asian and only 15 percent of other races including whites and black and Spanish , don't you?

I am confused and need someone to clarify:

Is this an overcrowded ghetto school with the future 'graduates' going on to careers in crime, or a school packed with asians who have flooded the community with high density dwellings?

They don't seem to be the same, either in make up or consequences to the neighborhood.

I would stake it out myself but someone might call the cops on me, a middle aged guy sitting outside the school just watching the student bodies. They may offer me a teaching job!

Have you gotten your schools confused? John Bowne HS is like that, Francis Lewis is nothing like that.

I wonder what the average reading level is for their graduates? 7th grade, probably.

Francis Lewis has the largest HS ROTC program in THE NATION and dominate all competition.

Hats off to them!

We are zoned for francis lewis and the school has its good and bad kids. My kids chose to go elsewhere (way to crowded), but many of their friends who did go -- DID not live in the zone, they used an address of a relative or a friend. Many did not live with their parents. They will move in with relatives, hence kids telling my children that they have two homes. A few years ago a kid was hit by a car at Francis Lewis. His parents I believe were in Arizona. the Asians send their kids all over the place to get better schools.

The overcrowding is easy to fix. One, prove that you are in the zone and that you live with your actual family. A one family house that already has a family listed for that address, will have to prove any other kid using the address has no parents in the area and they have given up permanent legal custody of their child. No using some relative's address.

Two: Common sense. If the school is filled with zone children, DON't accept anyone from outside the zone. The school is full.

I'm a guidance counselor in district 26 and send hundreds of kids to FLHS each year. It's an excellent school. Definitely crowded but filled with an overwhelming majority of hardworking working class kids who YES happen to be Asian. Not sure what you witnessed but it does not sound like FLHS.

190% capacity?? That's incredible. So I'm still not sure if it's the density of the neighborhoods for which it is the zoned school, or is it that it is really a 1st choice school. I didn't think Cardozo ranked after FLHS, but OK. On another note, does anyone, when seeing the hordes of students exiting all of these Queens high schools, think there will be jobs for all of these students when they graduate? That thought always occurs to me.

I taught at Francis Lewis for years. Everyone passes. Maybe not the first time but pass they do before it is time to graduate. There are two week "boot camps" to earn a term's work, 3 week summer schools to make up failed classes and online projects with no accountability. Foreign kids have exams and heaven knows what else read to them and special education students have hand picked proctors. Connect the dots and you will see why the school's stats are so good.

Yep you are correct, idiots pass high school these days. Im so sick as a taxpayer having to pay for special classes for foreigners. Make them learn english before ever setting foot into an American school and let them do it on their own parents' dime! This needs to change!

For years now, the Department of Education has been trying to do away with "Zoned Schools". Is this news article a precursor to removing the "Zoning" that allows the community's students to attend Francis Lewis High School?

With an attitude like that, no wonder people hate teachers and you're protected by your Union right? You can suck and still get paid. You don't get the irony of your remarks? You're a teacher and why would we need a slacker like you protected by a union and you get summer off and work until 3pm. So you just look the other way? Shame on you!

So who is importing all the African American kids to Bayside?
Is it only for the football program(s)?

These people are the worst racists ever seen, you are black, but if you are good at football heck you are our hero!

Users and abusers!
Poor kid is getting exactly what out this deal?
Fucking nothing that's what!

Most of the students are Asian and they're NOT the smartest. They drop out in the first or second year. I cant believe that they didnt let me drop out.
