W train coming back

From NY1:

The MTA is pulling the W train off the shelf and returning it to service — all part of the route changes announced Friday in anticipation of the Second Avenue subway opening.

The line was shelved in 2010 as part of a massive slate of cuts, which also included the elimination of the V train and several bus routes.

But the local line that once ran express from Astoria to Lower Manhattan could resume running in the fall, along the local weekday route now served by the Q train.

The Q would be rerouted along Second Avenue when three new stations open, something the MTA said could happen by the end of the year.

The agency said the return of the W train would ensure no loss of service for straphangers in Queens.

Shouldn't the 2nd Ave subway be called the "8" train? Why "W"?
