CB1 actually rejects rezoning request

In a decision that could bode well for the city’s push for affordable housing, a Queens community board Tuesday voted to deny the creation of a luxury Astoria residential tower.

Community Board 1 members voted unanimously to nix the proposal after developer Alma Realty quietly dropped the number of affordable units at the 1,000,000-square-foot building complex by 45 in April, civic leaders said.

“Having 295 affordable units means there will be 1,400 unaffordable apartments,” said Luigi Pepe, a former mechanic from Astoria who attended a board meeting last week. “How are our children or children’s children going to live if we keep this going for another 20 or 30 years?”

If approved by the city, Astoria Cove would be the first major rezoning effort under Mayor de Blasio, who is pushing for 200,000 new affordable units over the coming years.

This is a mile from the subway. The people in those units are going to drive a lot as a result. They should build higher near the trains instead so traffic doesn't have to get so much worse.

As usual, those that can do something totally miss the mark.

This is an absolute disaster. That community's leadership needs a complete reset but it ain't gonna happen with the hipsters and their stupid ass wacko fixation on life's great issues like craft beer and the selection in a tapas bar.

I am offended that the developer is calling it Astoria Cove. The proper historical name for this site is Pot Cove.
