Pan Am Hotel is no more

From DNA Info:

The decades-old Pan American Hotel on Queens Boulevard, dubbed "New York City's Most Convenient Hotel," has come in for its final landing, despite saying on its website that it was just "closed for renovations."

The seven-story, 216-room hotel closed its doors to hotel guests on Jan. 7, according to an employee working there Thursday, who asked not to be identified.

He said the employees were told in September that the hotel, near 51st Avenue, would close.

A spokesman for the New York Hotel Trades Council said the more than 40 employees working at the Pan American were given "ample notice" by the owners before they were laid off.

The site said the hotel is "closed for renovations," but the building has been sold, according to Tom Donovan, an agent with Massey Knakal.

According to the listing, which is still online, the hotel includes around 7,000 square feet of retail space and over 70,000 square feet of "additional development potential."

Here we go that whole area is getting completely congested to the Max. Richard Italiano tried to stop the overdevrlopment in Elmhurst and unfortunately was not successful. Nobody was on his side too many greedy politicians and council mrmebers.

Wonder why they closed down. ...was there a reason behind it or did they just decide to sell it for no reason? Was it not making enough money or what?

I think The hotel is a great site for a "Homeless" Shelter

You mean a building along a major circulation route and that is already divided into separate living units and likely only needs cosmetic repairs? Nonsense. Its much better to convert a dilapidated factory on toxic land, remote from both public transport and jobs.

It always struck me as an odd place to locate a hotel. It's several inconvenient blocks away from the Grand Ave/Elmhurst station.

Another dive bites the dust. What are they doing with the hospital over there by Woodhaven and Queens Blvd, across from the mall? What was St. John's hospital.

How sad, in the 60s it was a nice place and the nightclub was hopping.

There are already 3 other homeless shelters within 5 blocks of the PanAn hotel. This is a community of hard working families who, when they purchased their homes, thought only of paying their mortgages, getting a good education for their children & being able to retire to live in a great environment. They work very hard for this. They pay taxes, contribute in many ways to enhance their community and are not a burden to the system. When they extend their hands to you, it's to say hello how are you doing. They get nothing "FREE". Anything they get, they've worked for.....and what do they get, a slap in the face. One can thank all the Liberal politicians who don't give a darn about the working class!! These same politicians are basically telling people that you get more from welfare than if you got a job & become a productive citizen. How wrong is that to all involved!!!!
